[...] Keith Rabois posted an interesting article today which suggested that the root of all eBay’s problems over the past years was primarily due to its lack of fun. He attributes the rising use of sites like Facebook, MySpace, and YouTube as the culprits for eBay’s loss of users.
eBay could be floundering due to the proliferation of a competitor, called Dubli (http://www.dubli.com). It's pretty notable since it operates a reverse auction. There's a good range of products which was recently increased thanks to a shopping mall - which, being DubLi, guarantees low prices. I read somewhere that a discount of 60% was not unusual.

So there's an excellent change, I think, if word gets out, that eBay will find DubLi a serious challenger to the crown of online ecommerce.

I personally think eBay died when they started opening "stores". The best part of eBay for me was finding the unusual stuff that you generally just can't find in the store. Now shopping on eBay is just like walking through the local shopping mall, except that you can't try anything on. Cheap, crappy, mass-produced are the main items on eBay.

I am an ebay seller. When I first started I prided myself on posting items at the exact cost of postage and packing. Today feeshave risen so much that they effectively neutralise actual postage costs therefore you have to raise prices and the malignant spiral that benefits neither buyer or seller conitnues.

This is coupled with that fact that today, generally buyers, if they dont like an item chargeback instead of returning an item so there is an absolute necessity for postage tracking thus raising costs.

i'm slowly leaving ebay but i really do await an alternative to arrive. Etsy for example should simply clone eBay but only charge a listing or a final value fee not both. They fact that after ebay fees you get ripped for paypal fees is ridiclous. They are the same company!

People went to ebay for fun? Thats a new one on me.

I rarely visit to either sell or buy because 1) at auction I may not get my price, 2) when buying, there is just way too much crap and too many scammers, 3) the fees and the risk of not getting paid, or not getting the merchendise after paying, 4) the cumbersome arbitration process when things do go wrong, 5) the shipping hassles and fees.

Craigslist on the other hand is easy. Local sellers connecting with local buyers using CASH with no fees. I use it all the time.

Ebay killed themselves by admitting professional merchants, and allowing WAY too much stuff so you have to wade thru a ton of stuff to find what you want. In short, they let it get too big. Simple fix, separate the pros from the individuals. If I could search for a "widget" and specify that I only want to see results from individuals who only occasionally sell, it would be a better experience (for me).

Agree that the rise of Craigslist greatly affected eBay!

Many eBay consignment sellers prefer Craigslist for large items because they can require cash for local pick up.

Just today I went with a neighbor to pick up some free moving boxes advertised on Craisglist which still offers the thrill of the hunt.

Have to have Craigslist in there. All the little quirky stuff that used to go on E-Bay are now on CL. I know many people will say, "I won't use it..." for whatever reason. Thing is there are many more who are using CL, and it's killing Ebay as well as the newspapers classifieds.

As for the risks on Craiglist, I've been ripped off on E-Bay, and will likely get ripped off on CL at some point. The odds are stacked against the buyer on both, that's why brick-n-mortar will always exist.

Social Media sites maybe getting more traffic but they just don't have revenue to begin with. eBay on the other had is an eCommerce site where every product upload you make is a profit. These are two different things, eBay is much more profitable rather than useless Social Media sites where most users are kids who have no money.

The only thing that is killing eBay is . . . eBay itself. The hundreds of consultants and MBA's that are on campus, all hired by John Donahoe, are the death-nail to eBay.
