We see one of the problems is that the "early adopters" = people that first start a community are too web saavy to either click ads or cough-up cash. So there will always be a trade-off on rev versus critical mass on community size.

It would be hard for me to pay for a lot of those applications. Obviously it would correlate to how much I am making. Right now, I would probably pay for Pandora and Facebook, if I had to choose. It will be very interesting to see if what you described comes true at all.

So for example; You create a free service, develop critical mass. Decide that if You continue on a freemium model for much longer, You will go broke. You then add a premium service to which only a select few users subscribe.

As a savvy business man, I seize the opportunity to enter your space offering Your premium solutions for free & steal Your mass. You become MySpace, I become Facebook.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

If google charged for their services you wouldn't use it. If Pandora started charging, you'd go with iHeartRadio.

This model will only worsen in 10 years when the artists stop getting paid. Everyone hates the current Publisher/Production company model and views them as the bad guy. Do NIN or Kanye need to make Millions of dollars to live? No but it drives them to perform, to succeed.

If you remove the carrot the quality of the content will diminuish proportionately, to a point where only a pre-renaissance depression will spur creativity again.

There is no such thing as a free lunch.
