I ran an interview with the CEO of Twine a while back, which went horribly wrong. http://www.semanticsincorporated.com/2009/02/as-promised-interview-with-twine-on-the-usability-question.html
I pointed out that their number of pages per visitor had gone down from 14 to 3 (and 7 for registered users) and was the target of nasty attacks from their paranoid ceo on twitter, half of which he has since deleted, fearing for his reputation. You can still find a number of traces on twitter and blogs (web3feat), unless he went back there as well and deleted them.

Anyway... there were many other points made in that interview, which you could find of interest.
While I had generally always been favorable to Twine (until their response to that interview- Check my previous posts), I had pointed out a number of times that the user experience, both daily digest and interface, were poor.

Additionally, the ceo has had plenty of bad press from decisions he made to kick out some power users in the past. While he is pretending to make amends, he reverts back into old habits of name calling and denigration at the first sign of criticism. I wouldn't be surprised if he responded to this with some attacks as he did in the past, although now that I said it he'll find something smarter like sending his paid folks after me instead - he's obviously a complex adaptive system).

As far as the twine product is concerned, I use it to promote my blog posts by bookmarking them, that's pretty much it. Cross-posting is pretty much required since there are dozens of twine on the SAME topics... Beyond that, the signal-to-noise ratio is too bad for me, so I've pretty much stopped using it for anything else (even before the interview, in case you wonder). I do think they have some assets they could better take advantage of to make the user experience better, but instead they seem to focus on whatever pleases the ceo and that's apparently not the user's experience.

If I guess him correctly all he cares about is his next VC round and so he's trying to drive traffic anyway he can, even if that involves just acting as a landing page haven for bots. Over 92% of their traffic comes from "passers-by according to compete.com (friendfeed=95%, but friendster=48%). Also note the traffic has plateaued since this interview, even gone down by 4% since their max in may.

Twine's email digest is one of the only newsletters I let into my inbox, and it is the primary way in which I end up on the site.

The twines I subscribe to consistently have great articles posted to them to the point that Twine now provides a sizable chunk of my daily reading material.

However, when I do end up posting a link to something I've discovered through Twine, I tend to link to the original article, not the post on Twine. Not sure how they can address that, but there needs to be more of a reason to link back to the Twine than the original article. Especially since the comment activity on the site is usually pretty low.

This is the first I've heard of Twine or FriendFeed. I'm a little surprised that I haven't seen this and a bit embarrassed. How many more networks does a person gotta join though? Anyone else suffering from Networking Saturation?

59% direct traffic? I call BS.

I have yet to see a single client (I've consulted on dozens & dozens of sites, several of them with 10 million+ uniques, and a handful with 30 million+ monthly visitors)...none get more than 10% direct traffic...unless you're one of the leading top ten internet companies.

Exactly. A more social delicious. Twine also has a personalization side -- a Reader -- which delicious does not have. Twine is also semantic and does some mining and learning for you. The next version of Twine will make search a much higher priority...

right direction for tweets. let me remind u TC feature smsgupshup india, and new startup by myspace founder in same direction.

forums or groups on interests were always needed, now real time search adds value to them. fb should make real time search of public comments/posts in fb groups and pages.

Furthermore you can keep track of Twine activity directly within Friendfeed, so in that respect they are compatible. Twine is feeding information into Friendfeed.

Twine currently does not provide a way to track your friends' activities all over the Web. That is something that Friendfeed specializes in. From that perspective Friendfeed is broader on the social dimension than Twine. Our solution will not be to try to replicate that capability in Twine, but rather to do a good job of integrating with it where it already exists.
