[...] The future of the weekly city paper is the daily blog. Hints of this future can already be seen at Village Voice Media, which owns and operates 15 of the top weeklies in the country, including the Village Voice, SF Weekly, and LA Weekly. Bill Jensen, the director of new media who oversees all the Village Voice Media sites tells me that 40 percent of pageviews comes from the blogs on the sites, up from 20 percent a year ago. Some of the more popular ones include columnist <a href=" http://blogs.villagevoice.com/dailymusto/“>Michael Musto’s blog, Nikki Finke’s <a href=" http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/“>Deadline Holywood Daily, and <a href=" http://www.toplessrobot.com/“>Topless Robot. via techcrunch.com [...]

@andrew i appreciate your inquiry.

major engines are scared because even though standardized categories could improve user experience it could disrupt their revenue model. especially googl with 65% of income from the adspam syndicate network aka other peoples sites. engines cant claim organizing the worlds information when they have no standardization.

imagine telling someone to visit the link you shared. impossible. than imagine trying to weed through all the garbled results.
http://local.yahoo.com/NY/New+York/Health+Beauty/Day+Spas;_ylt=Ak5oUitMD_0FiZBGhg2BU.qGNcIF;_ylv=3

now a natural language category for this subject on yahoo might be.
dayspa.yahoo.com combined with a national zip code search box. add some social networking functionality and what do you have? the fundamentals of a natural language location based social network channel. a better example of natural language location based categories is http://www.PlumbingLocator.com.

Villagelocator - I am curious what you mean by "natural language categories that every major search engine is currently scared or clueless to harness"?

Here's a page for "Day Spas in New York" from Yahoo Local
http://local.yahoo.com/NY/New+York/Health+Beauty/Day+Spas;_ylt=Ak5oUitMD_0FiZBGhg2BU.qGNcIF;_ylv=3

and you can find a similar page for your location on Google by searching "day spas".

Those seem "natural" to me.

Almost most all of my revenue on www.worstpizza.com comes from advertising, and other bloggers writing up on me. The Village Voice should reprint my reviews, I offered them to their editor and got no response! Note to Village Voice! Always take free reviews from pizza experts

local online advertising is a hard nut to crack. :) if you ask me the code has been cracked. just that it has yet to be fully executed. Googl is happy with their ad system that dominates 65% of the market. they dont want to change. yahope is just wishin that something they do works.

is a rolodex style index the first place to start? a natural language foundation? a little structure maybe?

my advice is to take a tip from the print yellowpages. use natural language categories that every major search engine is currently scared or clueless to harness. combine these natural language channels with premium location based personalized niche offerings and technologies and the game is over. whom ever does this first may forever dominate the local search arena.
