Look up studies on "well to wheel" efficiency and you'll see that electrics are the clear winner. Also, even if coal is burned to make the electricity, electric cars still create less pollution than gas powered cars (and if you make power from clean sources like wind, solar or hydro, then the numbers for electric cars get even better).
