The poll results from yesterday are in, and it isn’t even close. 80% of you think Craigslist (46 million US visitors) is more important than South Carolina (4.5 million residents). Background on the conflict is here.
The numbers are obviously not statistically relevant since TechCrunch readers, a tech savvy lot, are going to be more likely to side with Craigslist. But South Carolinians (or whatever it’s supposed to be) apparently aren’t too thrilled with their state, either. The Palmetto Scoop, a popular conservative blog in South Carolina, held their own poll today and asked “Which is more important, 2,500 TechCrunch readers (the total number that had voted as of this post) or enforcing the law?”
As of right now, 60% of the 124 respondents say, well, TechCrunch is more important than enforcing the law (which isn’t really what the Craigslist issue is about anyway).
Your conservative voters have spoken, Mr Attorney General McMaster. We’ll draw up the secession paperwork for your signature.
Update: Just because it’s awesome:

Now SC can join Gov Perry and Texas and start their own 4th world.
better un-ban prostitution. only ban trafficing and pimping.
As a South Carolinian by birth, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. But, as a South Carolinian, I’m so used to that conflicting emotion in matters of the Palmetto State that I’ll just do what I usually do and do both.
As a South Carolinian, let me say two things:
1) If it were up to me, we would have already seceded again, and not at all because of some silly website.
2) Using an internet poll as some sort of proof is laughably dishonest.
It’s not being used as “some sort of proof”. It’s a joke.
Are all South Carolinans as devoid of humor as you?
Actually I think I have a pretty good sense of humor, see my gravatar?
Also, I said “some sort of proof” and not “proof” so quit using the joke excuse as some sort of argument.
All I see is a picture of Obama. If there’s something humorous written on the Seal, I can’t see it.
That has to be the worst defense I’ve ever heard. The only conclusions I can come to are that either a) English isn’t your first language or b) you’re some sort of idiot.
LOL. Arrington doesn’t actually HATE the citizens of South Carolina, it’s just (a great) part of the joke.
You think you are playing along, Lou, but you are kind of making a fool of yourself.
This could make for an interesting series of what we value more than South Carolina. My mind is racing with ironic web-polls
“…aren’t to thrilled with their state”
typo
; )
thx
typo > “thanks”
we’ll glady be independent. something you fags and hippees dont know anything about
I think Michael has gone off the deep end since returning from his leave, with the handshake posts and now this. Not sure this kind of material is worthy of TechCrunch, but I’m finding it absolutely hilarious anyway.
The GDP of South Carolina is $153 billion. The GDP of Craigslist is a couple of dead hookers. Who’s the winner?
if you actually address the post on a logical basis you’ve already lost.
OK, but as a “joke” it’s not really funny or original. 1999 wants its internet humour back.
1999 wants its “_______ wants it’s ______ back” jokes back.
Wow. That was golden.
@youare +1
>>We’ll draw up the secession paperwork for your signature.
If provoked, SC would willingly secede anyway. This is a win/win for all parties involved.
Secession is great! We wouldn’t be a country without it.
I agree. I’d love it if we seceded again. I just wish we would have done it sooner… like 100 years ago, or at least 8.
If you are so excited to secede, feel free to leave the country instead. We’ll all wave bye-bye.
The vid was a low blow Mike. An honest, but nevertheless low blow.
On a side note: LOL
Perhaps as a return shot, maybe there could be a video of Miss California USA, combined with the vote totals on Prop 8?
Man, I forgot about that video. Funny stuff
Yeah..SC leaving the Union. We have the lowest education rate in the nation..oh ..wait theirs Mississippi…anyhoo…it would be like Idiotcracy here. Matter of fact we have lot of stats that we rank low in, one of the fattest states, unemployment, our roads suck ass,we were voted to have the worst drivers last year by some watchdog group (see education stat for reason why), we still fly the rebel flag, the NAACP has a boycott, our college football teams suck, all the females look the same (white and blond with huge buggeyed sunglasses, you know what i’m sayin’), we had a air pollution problem too last year from what I can remember,oh their gonna build another coal plant, Columbia mayor paid the same city bills three or four times….the guy running the money “retired”…then they hired him back to….wait for it……manage the cities money, should I continue?
…Realtree is considered fashionable, Myrtle Beach is going bankrupt because the mayor decided the “Bike Week” impossible so now no one gets to make any money, the city cant decide whether or not our little bar area in town needs a parking lot or not…and hired and paid for that indecision with outside sources, our university has an acceptance rate of pretty much 100%, we recently let tattoo shops to operate, oh…we also got rid of some “blue laws”…well in some areas, and yes its really really racist here, just read the CL rant and rave sections, we loooove meth…and old police cars with “dubs” on them, whatever the hell that is, we have taken language to a new level (see education stat), white women rule here and are protected…even by black dudes, oh..we just recently allowed Sunday alcohol sales, yes its Christian here…when we want to be and when its convenient, our newspapers vote the same places and things in their yearly “best of”, oh yeah…the Mcmaster thing…..
The video isn’t awesome. You’ve taken a joke way too far, the horse is dead, leave it alone already. Bringing in video clips like that while your own writers, and you, can’t seem to go a post without a few very obvious spelling mistakes is the pot calling the kettle black. While the video is a train wreck, she did it once and had the guts to go back on national tv to answer the question again. If you want to make jokes about McMaster, fine, leave the woman out of it.
I first thought this was Miss South Carolina, but such as the iraq maybe therefore its not.
listen, the poor thing brought shame on the English language and brutalized the idea of her own intelligence. so she went back on tv after having days (maybe weeks) to prepare an answer to the SAME question. if that makes her so ballsy, then i guess she doesn’t need you defending her. she can, and should, take the heat for her own sorry mistake.
I’m not as memetastic as you, I hadn’t even seen that! I’m glad they posted it, I needed a laugh.
…oh…we went ballistic when we found out that they were advertising blatantly gay advertisements regarding state tourism over in Europe somewhere..cause we dont want to be thought of as a “gay” state, our politics is pretty much white…and male, if it wasn’t for the military bases there would be no ethnic diversity here, we kinda have a cool art thing going on..oh wait…they pretty much cut all the funding for that…yeah, and we pretty much take in all the nations trash for money, we could have had the Carolina panthers in some form or another here, but the gamecocks were more important, we don’t have a California Pizza Kitchen, we dont use turn signals or stay in the lines for that matter, gangs are family here, we love Mexicans…as long as they stay at the chicken factory and are staying out of trouble by doing landscape work, everyone knows who Megan Kelly is, all the white guys here where baseball hats, our Sheriff went after Michael Phelps for the bong picture thingy, our prisons are ridiculous, our newspapers are nothing but AP rewrites….more?
That video is FUNNY as HELL…. wow,
I’m not quite sure what Arrington’s got against the people of South Carolina his vitriolic posts over the past two days have been rather off the reservation. Clearly Arrington doesnt value the opinion of others or for that matter the residents of South Carolina. While the South Carolina attorney general has is certainly ambulance chasing on this matter TechCrunch’s position to attack not just the Attorney General who is deserving of such attacks but the state and its residents it self going so much as attacking those with deferring political opinions from TechCrunch’s dear leader Michael Arrington. This used to be a great tech blog. Now it’s denigrated to the political biases and hate rants of Michael Arrington.
I think it’s just something to amuse him. I’m not sure that he really has anything against South Carolina.
The reason I say this is if you look at ANY state in our union you will see this type of stuff going on with politicians, public speakers of all sorts, etc, etc. Anything that goes on in SC goes on elsewhere in our country.
I live in Maryland, born and raised, and I can tell you that all of these things and far more go on here. If you really doubt that just do a little research into Maryland politics.
I have to agree that expanding your opposition to the AG into an attack on the entire state is uncalled for and not what I expected from you. It’s a similar kind of bigotry that underlies racism/anti semitism. Enjoying ridiculing certain groups for a perceived lack of intelligence or behavior that differs from the majority, has a long and extremely distressing history.
Clearly South Carolina’s AG is wrong, but Michael Arrington is worse. The AG is trying to police his own morality, Arrington is just hateful.
That is why unfortunately I will not be visiting TechCrunch anytime soon until Arrington gets off his high horse and issues an apology. Until then I suppose I will get my tech news fix from Mashable.
Thank you Mal and Seth, I love it when someone articulates something I’m thinking so well. I appreciate humor but you have taken it to a more mean spirited than neccessary. I’m not from South Carolina or know anyone there or have any connection to it, it just outrages me when somebody posts this kind of mocking, hateful garbage against a certain group. If you were commenting on something like SC voting against like a same-sex marriage bill or something like that at least I could understand somewhat. I will not be visiting TechCrunch anymore.
Look, this is more subtle “redneck-bashing” by our lofty technosophisticate elites.
I’ll take 10 South Carolinas to the stupidity, lunacy and arrogance of one California any day of the week.
Enjoy your ascent while you can, snobs, it won’t be a 1000 year Reich.
Dumb People are not a “race”
Props for Southern Bob, that comment cracked me up and gave this posting value.
Exactly.

The young beauty in the video is clearly a stooge inserted by the Cartographer’s Union of America.
Hey I’m a SC.
I have to say while I agree we are mostly a mix of judgmental baptist churchgoers and gangsters (come chek out Columbia), we do have our nice places, such as Irmo, Myrtle Beach, and the old Charleston (there is a new modernized Charleston and the old, revolutionary war Charleston sitting side-by-side). Greenville is probably the cleanest, nicest “rich person” city in SC.
Irmo made it to 100 most affordable places to live in the US. I don’t know if it’s still there though.
While I agree with most of Michael’s points (and I’m a huge fan of TC by the way), I live in SC and I must vote against Craigslist.
Mrs. SC sux. She’s such a retard to say the least.
I love all these secessionists. I would love to see their faces when they are required to get visas for every city in the rest of the US they visit or even face harsher taxes or perhaps lower employment as a result of cocooning themselves within the US.
Who knows, maybe they’ll be the next India, and all the call-centers will set up shop right there.
My question to South Carolinians – with your current logic, or lack thereof, why not take up the fight and ban text messaging or television or video games alltogether?
Dude the stupid Attorny General doesn’t represent the whole state. That’s Gov. Sanford’s job.
Just because McMaster’s logic is retarded doesn’t mean all South Carolinian’s logic is retarded.
the focus of the story should be about a stupid attorney general whatever his party or beliefs are period.
Just like the stupid attorney general of NC that tried to prosecute the duke Lacrosse players with no evidence and ruined peoples lives to make a name for himself.
I know what the argument is about.. but I’m just making clear that all SC people shouldn’t be targeted because of some stupid politician.
Thnx for pointing it out though
SC meant to reply to Arrington. I agree with you. Hopefully we will see another nice post about NYC since they are in the news talking about thieves thriving on craiglist if more isn’t done.
Maybe they’ll drill for their own oil offshore, become energy independent and sell it back to the states at profit.
Really, if you don’t know what you’re talking about, don’t comment. There’s no such thing as too much freedom from the loons and fucksticks in DC.
you are still a idiot arrington who is taking a low road to get cheap hits to your site that really don’t need help. other than you showing your ideology which I think a lot of folks could care less about even in a joke. The site is pretty cool MA don’t ruining it with your stupid posts. Even a tongue in cheek one.
So I’ve lived in SC for 5 years, visited every year for a few months for 5 before that.
Coming in as an outsider, with some experience of a different culture and lifestyle to assess the people and state, i’ll say the following:
SC is ruled by the churches, they institutionalize a kind of intolerance for any kind of free thinking and progression, they entertain and bring a lot of social joy to the people in a very strict framework.
Deep down, I don’t see many happy people in SC. They pretend joy in worship and in God.
I can’t stand how they make children grow up to be idiots and vote in more repetition and support for this.
I think if Christianity wasn’t in SC it would be a beautiful place where people cared about each other for real reasons, education was a priority, stewardship of the environment, and an acknowledgement that people are different and if they don’t hurt people – live and let live.
It makes me want to cry and laugh, as one poster said.
Most arrogant post ever.
Obviously the techCrunch people are more important, because they are real people. North Carolina is just an area between some arbitrarily sketched borders on a map. The people there are important, sure enough, and many of them are techCrunch people. But this attorney general should spend more time at the exercise gym, working off his mislaid anxieties
The girl in the video looks like a trainee for Sarah Palin’s staff.
I’ve lived in South Carolina all my life. In the 1970’s I had long hair and black friends. Each year I attend one of the best arts festivals in the world; right here. The roads are bad but not near as bad as the drivers with Michigan plates who are on them. I spent a couple of summers up in Chicago as a teenager. There were people who dressed like Nazi’s spouting hate to no end while I looked on in disbelief. Oh, and WGN gave them airtime. So whats my point might you ask? South Carolina is no different than anywhere else. It’s a different set of yahoo’s bucking for any angle they can here, just like from where ‘you-all’ are from, that’s all. True in many ways this state is behind the times. But it still amazes me as to how many people from the OTHER places are moving here. What am I missing I wonder?
As a South Carolina resident and entrepreneur I hate to see this stuff. For the record, I am also conservative.
What McMaster has done here is not materially different than what thousands of politicians across the country do on a weekly basis (on both sides of the aisle). Abuse of power is rampant in this country and obviously the AGs have some of the greatest power nation wide. I just wish there was a voice to call BS on them all as Techcrunch and others have done here.
I, like most, am against prostitution and I think Craigslist should put reasonable steps in place to prevent people from advertising illegal behavior using the site. The company consented with multiple state AGs to do this and honestly they fell short of that obligation. Perhaps their latest set of promised changes (assuming they stay in place) will accomplish that.
Also for the record, I believe strongly this was an attempt to get press and even a right decision, made for the wrong reasons, can be a bad…IMO that is the case here.
Now, as to TC’s coverage of this issue (specifically bashing SC in an effort to polarize the issue and draw more attention to its weblog) is shameful bigotry in my opinion.
Speaking as a minority business owner in this state, for you to attack the way you have does us no good as a country (let alone for my state). You have undermined much of the hard work we have put in to move past some painful black marks in the past.
Is SC as affluent as California? No.
Are we as educated as a population? No.
Are there racists here? Sure. Any in Cali?
The only positive I see in your posts is the attention you have brought to this matter. Hopefully voters of our state will take note.
All of that said, I believe you should issue an apology to the residents of SC for some of your remarks. You have a powerful platform TC, and some of your comments are no less in the spirit of bigotry than common racial slurs. Whether TC likes it or not, we are one country and we should not look down on one another. I would like to see California serve as a tech leader and I wish TC would use its platform to advance America forward (including less advantaged states like SC). Make no mistake, I’m not asking for pity or a handout, I’m just asking for a fair shake.
TC, please stop the hate speech and apologize.
