Well, you know Yahoo is a business too, they probably figured that would be a better move. The apps revolution has even given rise to about anyone making money too just by reselling too, which is what we are into by the way.

[...] Yahoo Mobile Abandons Its Smartphone App to Focus on The iPhone TECHCRUNCH Yahoo is abandoning its mobile app for the Blackberry and other smartphones in order to focus more on its recently relaunched iPhone app. For every other phone, it is concentrating development efforts around the mobile browser experience. People applying for the smartphone app, which is still in beta, are receiving a notice (reproduced below) stating that “Yahoo has decided to cease development” of the app on May 20th. Yahoo Mobile now only has eyes for the iPhone. Rather than create a million apps for every other phone, it is standardizing on delivering the same experience through the mobile browser.
I think this is a mistake on yahoo!'s part. Yes iPhone is all the rage but it's also the most competitive and still have a very limited number of devices.

As a mass market brand Yahoo! needs to be relevant everywhere across all platforms.

Fortunately, for all the non-iphone users, you can still go to Getjar.com and download a shortcut to Yahoo! mobile. Their mobile site pretty much does everything you need it to and works on all handsets anyway.

maybe that's what they're thinking too!

yahoo continues their march toward insignificance.

why would I use their web site when there are other better sites.

iphone envy? when the iphone does in the future what i can do now, I'll get one. 3.0 isn't it.

Before you dismiss the iPhone/iPod touch platform as becoming solely game based, you should really do yourself a favor and check out some info on iPhone/touch OS 3.

Apple is adding some interesting features, such as support for external input devices like keyboards, scientific/medical sensors, etc..

Absolutely.

Since the iPhone/iPod touch platform runs a slimmed down version of Mac OS X (BSD UNIX) it opens the door for other possibilities down the road.

There are rumblings that Apple may eventually link Mac OS X, iPhone/touch (and the mythical Mac/iPhone tablet?) AND the AppleTV platforms:
iPhone/touch apps may run on ALL of them.

Supposedly, display resolution scalability is already built into the OS.

As long as an iPhone/iPod touch app runs under the current OS, there's no need to customize for various devices, except for differences between the iPhone and iPod touch. I'd wager that would mean big time and cost savings for developers.

It's too bad that mobile web browsers on the other phones are so poor. Maybe Apple's competition should focus on improving THAT.

Some serious competition would be a good thing for Apple. Face it, the rest of the industry essentially sat on its' collective hands and scoffed while Apple managed to outmaneuver them ALL!

Who would have thought back in 2001 that the iPod would have morphed into what it is now.

Yahoo is looking increasing more confused about what they business model is. They embark on building a hugely promising X-Forms based platform for mobile application development (Blueprint, on which Yahoo’s smartphone app is based), which runs on most modern phones, and generally has no real competition. If I am a business and I want to build a mobile app (e.g. mobile interface to our CRM/ERP) for my staff on a manageable budget, Yahoo Blueprint would have been almost the best platform for this, if its development had not slowed down (and now apparently ceased) over the past year. But it is OK to scrap all this great technology, since everyone is moving to the iPhone, and Yahoo has long given up on being the trendsetter in technology.

Then, they have a great mail and calendaring service (I still prefer Yahoo mail to Gmail since I find hate Gmail's conversation view). Oh, sorry, they have *two* great mail an calendaring services (Zimbra). Now, instead of focusing on delivering great mobile experience for these products, Yahoo creates a mobile app that is filled with crappy applications and widgets which are mostly interfaces to third-party services, making it practically unsuitable for businesses (but they did not bother to open up their mail and calendaring services to businesses either, so I guess that is to be expected).

Yahoo are clueless about what assets they have and how to make money out of them.

I used to configure a number of BBs at work, as recently as 2007. They were really cool for email and IM, but were not useful web devices.

Some might argue - well, that was 2007. That's my point. The iPhone in 2007 - when it was released - was a full-fledged web device (minus flash support).

As for the guy who commented that the BB outsold the iPhone, that is true. Of course, everybody conveniently leaves out the detail that BB HAD to do a deal of 2-for-1, just to outsell. That doesn't strike me as confidence.
