When Mogulus launched in 2007, few people understood its name. Most people still don’t because, quite frankly, it doesn’t make a lot of sense. Or I should say, didn’t make a lot of sense — because beginning today, the service has been completely rebranded as something much more obvious: Livestream.
Mogulus is making the change because it feels like the entire field of streaming live video on the web is on the verge of exploding in popularity, and it’d be hard to find a better name to take advantage of that, as CEO Max Haot tells us. Naturally though, this change would not have been possible without the killer livestream.com domain, which Mogulus acquired recently. Haot wouldn’t tells us how much they paid for the domain, but you can bet it was a very pretty penny. [Update: Domain Name Wire claims it sold for $100,000 - thanks Jeremy]
So now Livestream moves forward. Having just launch its super simple Procaster tool that allows for one-button streaming over video over the web, the first tool Livestream will launch is Broadcaster. It will offer the same one-click simplicity, but will do so completely over a web browser, without any software needing to be downloaded (which you need for Procaster — which is also more powerful).
Mogulus has seen some good growth over the past year in terms of visitors to its site, according to numbers from Compete. I suspect that will rise greatly with this new domain. But it’s the features that make users stick around, and this move to one-click publishing is a good idea — keep it simple, stupid, and all that. Haot also notes that Livestream has over 1,000 paying Pro members, the premium service it launched last year.
So what was Mogulus going for with that name? Well, as you can kind see in the now old logo, it was Mogul-us, as in “anybody can become a media mogul,” Haot says. Yeah, Livestream is much, much better.
Disclosure: Mogulus advertises their Procaster product on this site.

Supposedly, the domain went for around $100,000.

thanks jeremy i’ll add in there.
this site should acquire live.com
This makes no sense to me.
Why would you throw away your brand for a generic domain?
Since when has this strategy ever worked for a company?
Shoes.com? Computers.com?
Bad, bad decision in my opinion. And the site is ugly now.
yea i hear you, ive no idea what im looking at the site is unintuitive and a mess its horrible
Well, I think it was expensive but very smart. Mainly because Now I know about them. I didn’t before and that’s probably their goal – to increase brand awareness in order to increase profit margin!
Also, they have us talking about them, and I wasn’t before…. sound’s like it’s working to me.
Question is, how long will it take for them to see profittable results??
who owns the greatest killer domain portfolio ever created? whats its value?
great purchase, mogooloose was terrible. nice to see companies putting a value on what can make or breaks startups. your location, how its communicated and remembered are more important now than ever. cloud computing is a dime a dozen making premium natural language location more valuable than ever.
StreamLocator.com – full motion
Hahah… $100k?!?!?!
Is this the year 2000?
WAAAAYYYY Overpriced.
$100k is not exactly a premium for a trendy domain. In 2007, business.com sold for $350 Million and earlier this year toys.com $5.1 Million.
350? Lol, about 10.
All of the recent startup weekend and social events in the Triangle area of NC have been mixed and pushed with Mogulus. It’s a very recognizable client when you see it on a laptop or a netbook screen. The static signal screen is very distinct.
This isn’t to take away from Ustream, Qik, etc… but the move and cut and flow of multiple cameras is a unique strength that Mogulus provides for these kinds of events.
Of course, I use this to watch my cats… i.e. the true purpose of the Interwebs.
I tried it. Still nothing like a Tricaster, which is the real way to do this.
Vidblaster is alway much better.
Ok, this is sort of awesome. It’s great to see more enormous web apps taking advantage of the more common tools (eg browsers & web technology), rather than forcing end users to rely on software.
MY friend was selling Audio.org and Video.org about seven months ago. Not a match for this company. He ended up taking low five figures for them. Right now its a buyers market on domains. The keyword matching domain that we have cost us high five figures, but its worth every penny, even if it is a .net
This Web site may be very useful for folks in the media. I like the current streaming videos there that you can access from the Live Now button.
yeah, media people will probably use a live video site.
That is an awesome domain name!
Wow! Great move by Mogulus. Livestream is great branding! Mogulus has been very solid and has great Tricaster integration, although a better Twitter interface is now needed (aka “Social Stream”). I’d also like to see another lower pricing tier.
That’s why sometimes a WEB 2.0 name isn’t the best…
Ustream isn’t working for me since their last update. So I have been looking for something more dependable. Right now LiveStream.com loads painfully slow, but I will check again in a few days to see if the buzz has run it’s course and the site improves.
Yeah I’m sure they’re getting slammed and are still moving everything over. I would try again tomorrow probably.
Bin Song is a typo squatting FAG!
livestrean.com
livestraem.com
Wow! a strong domain name changed everything on .com domain. Its awesome ! I will be visiting again tomorrow.
I guess when you are getting your butt kicked by Ustream, copying them is a good strategy.
If getting your butt kicked means making more money, you’re probably right. I’m impressed with the numbers. Over “1,000 paying Pro members” @350US$/month?
If it was just about making money, Twitter wouldn’t be able to be sold for $1 billion…
Ustream probably makes the same with their Watershed product
@GUnit Agree
@GUnit you’re probably right, it’s not about making money. Hey! Wake up! It’s 2009, not 1999.
They needed to do something. They are getting their blow away by Ustream and the others..
http://siteanal...tv+mogulus.com/
@SiliconJim yeah, good point, generic names don’t work, take facebook.com for example…
Yea, that is “real generic…”
Facebook was such a common term before they came around..
Comparing them to Facebook is mindless…
Looks like a sign of desperation to me
The site is fugly…. cheap rip off of Justin.tv and Ustream
They paid $100K for the domain via SEDO. An excellent acquisition that instantly adds value to the business.
20 points for the screen shot featuring Cesar Milan.
let us see if the new domain name is able to attract the visitors and justify its high price.
Domain name is important but not beyong your offerings. If offerings are good , people will flock your site.
A rose smells as sweet by any other name
I’ve used their system for over 6 months and I like most of the features, but the big draw backs are that the player is ugly and the pro features are way too expensive.
I’d like it better if I can use their system but host videos on my own server and using my own player.
Glad to see them in the news again. I was just wondering lately about “Mogulus”.
Their domain acquisition makes sense to me.
(and reminds me that I own StreamCast.com , which I could consider selling for around $100K as well) (I find it actually *better* than LiveStream, with the ‘cast’ that make it sound like “broadcast”).
I think it was a good idea to change the name – I always like the service and I’ve casually been using it for quite a while now. But Mogulus always sounded a little like “make money online” to me (my mother tongue is German, and “Mogul”, stemming from the Indian word, means “very rich person”). But anyways – two thumbs up for Livestream.
great deal for the last domain-owner… livestream.com is just a copy of ustream, justin.tv, ..
really new is http://make.tv with a real tvstudio..its not only a one-stream-streamer. try it
