@MG: I list my age on message boards/social sites/ whatever as about 103: does that count? I'm 38 but who cares: we can make up a story and stick to it. We can fake photographs and old creaky-sounding quotes about me petting my cat and knitting and stirring my homemade beef stew because after all I'm 103 and have nothing better to do with my time except that and Twitter - right? Hey - I think we have a winner! Hit me up on email if you agree... :)

Seriously?

Seriously, I wonder what the other UK publication was because everyone knows the Sun is full of crap...it's like reading The Onion...which is what I would rather do.

Some additional independent research to confirm the UK press metadata data wasn't been doctored after this TechCrunch article was published:

The picture used on this TechCrunch article is exactly the same filesize (57,436bytes) as the one used on the Telepgraph article and a binary comparison confirms both files to be the same.

The exif metadata of the image hosted on TechCrunch being the same as the Telegraph's host image thus contains the background info !

Oh, and in answer to your ridiculous headline, the UK press has NO IDEA what 'Digg bait' is - they create stories to sell newspapers. If your shite boring newspapers in the US did more of it, and threw in some tits as well, perhaps they'd still sell in quantity.

NEWSFLASH:

UK Newspaper invents story about current 'news' hot topic.

In the UK, we've long learnt how to filter then news from the 'news'. Unfortunately, as it requires the use of irony and intelligence, it clearly does not translate well for US bloggers.

You think anyone should be seriously shocked that this story is 'set up'? Then go and play somewhere else.

NO - the UK media did NOT set this up. To confirm this check the Exif (Exchangeable image file format) data of Ivy's photo used on any site.

This can be done using either a Exif viewer or a hex editor - for info on Exif please see wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exchangeable_image_file_format

The Exif data for any Ivy's published photos (e.g. telepgraph, The Sun etc) all very clearly state in the Exif, the following background information:

"Silver Surfer Day...Ivy Bean, who is 104 years old, received training today from The Geek Squad at Hillside Manor residential home in Bradford. Ivy will become the UK's oldest Tweeter' on the social networking site, Twitter, in celebration of Silver Surfers Day, which is on Friday 15th May. PRESS ASSOCIATION Photo. Picture date: Thursday May 14, 2009. The Geek Squad decided to help Ivy out after hearing stories about her Facebook exploits and how she was keen to give Twitter a try. Photo credit should read: Bob Collier/PA Wire"

The fact that her first 2 tweets do tie with this article up is because she did her first TWEETS in front Bob Collier on Thur 14th May 2009 but ONLY because the press had been invited to watch her for "Silver Surfer Day" exactly for the reasons stated in the Exif pic information.

NO – the UK media did NOT set this up. To confirm this check the Exif (Exchangeable image file format) data of Ivy’s photo used on any site.

This can be done using either a Exif viewer or a hex editor – for info on Exif please see wikipedia: http://en.wikip...age_file_format

The Exif data for any Ivy’s published photos (e.g. telepgraph, The Sun etc) all very clearly state in the Exif, the following background information:

Well, we don't draw the tabloid/broadsheet distinction any more, since the broadsheets all started printing tabby-sized editions instead of the cornfield-sized papers of yesteryear. Now we refer to 'qualities' and 'red tops', and the Telegraph is most definitely at the 'quality' end. Perhaps a better distinction would be 'shit' and 'unutterably shit'...

The picture seems staged too.

Staged stories like these about a 104 year old using Twitter is killing the newspaper industry.

One would expect quality information from a newspaper, not Barnum.
