I agree with the article. Why does every guy I encounter need to hold hands with me for a few seconds? It’s a primitive, stupid, and filthy tradition that should be dropped. And stop trying to impress me with your manhood by crushing my hand bones. Jeezuz, what a fucking bore.

What a thoroughly stupid comment.

Hand shaking is a standard form of interaction; every society in the world has one. The idea that because it can spread germs it should be be abandoned, when it serves a definitive social function, is absurd.

As a follow up, a recent study has suggested that kissing, and indeed many forms of bodily contact without any generally understood purpose, is designed to strengthen immunity through spreading it through a community (it is the cyclical nature of diseases that make them so long lasting).

Rant away, but handshakes aren’t going anywhere.

Michael -

I am surprised at all the negative feedback you’ve been receieving. Personally, I couldn’t agree with you more. Whenever I see someone I know leave the bathroom without washing their hands, I am forever cautious around them afterward, and I wash my hands after touching theirs as soon as I can.

I also dislike shaking hands. Sanitizer just isn’t as good as soap and water. I guess the best thing to do is just ignore everyone else – if they think you’re weird, that’s their problem.

If I ever meet you, I’m doing away with all social graces: no greeting, no farewell, and certainly no handshakes. I’ll just demand what I want of you in a flat, loud, speech recognition-friendly monotone, like the tool that you are. I’ll repeat myself once in case you were distracted, looking at your reflection in my mirrorshades. If you don’t immediately comply, I’ll dismiss you as a broken robot. I’ll simply turn my back on you and have normal conversations and social dealings with non-affected people. Enjoy your drama-drenched, hypochondriac, OCD, Asperger’s-riddled, lonely, despairing life.

You are lucky you don’t live in a culture where whenever you meet people you actually have to kiss on the cheek, like my culture here in egypt. (by the way thats how men say hi to men and women to women but when a man and a woman meet they just sake hands — uffffff)

The hand shake started as a gesture of trust and mutual respect. I think that it is a shame that there are people out there that are that worried about getting the sniffles that they want to end this. If you are in a business meeting with me and do not want to shake my hand, not only will I be offended, but I probably will not do business with you. There are so many things that are “bad for you” now days that it makes me sick.
