interesting. b/c if you go on the major jobs boards it seems like a majority of the the jobs are tech-related. not just programming but business analysts positions and other “back-office” jobs that require expertise in a particular application.

Tech Jobs Scarce? on Dice? Are you kidding?

I guess it depends on the skill set and location, and how you view the relevance of the jobs that are no longer available.

Keeping tabs on Dice via 5+ years of email alerts, I can see clearly that there are a lot less .NET/C#/MS tech jobs, but Linux related jobs (perl, php, sysadmins, QA, webdev, etc.) seem to be just as plentiful and well paying as they were before the onslaught of useless Web2.0 start-ups (which probably account for that 47% gap) and economic crisis.

My 2 cents about new ventures..

1. Follow local networking meetings, meetups. Meet people, discuss ideas to create something new that is not dependent on ad revenues.
2. Nowadays you do not need a VC to start. With open source etc. you can build things very cheap.
You may need them for better contacts/guidance down the road.
3. Conserve cash by downgrading home, car, and all the pre-paid stuff.

From your figure seems like there are a lot of unemployed people. But I don’t know too many people in IT sector being layoff. Most IT company layoff Sales, Marketing but not Developer/programmer.

am I missing something here?

I wonder what’s going to happen when it’s announced that us taxpayers are going to be footing the bill to bailout the clueless newspapers?

Perhaps the tech industry should jump on the bailout bandwagon too? What’s next blaming Google for everyone’s problems. Oh wait, the newspapers already beat us to it. This is getting ridiculous and very tiring. When does it end?
