People say the iPhone is really a gaming device with a mobile phone bolted on. And given how much time I spend playing games on my iPhone, I tend to agree. The touchscreen, accelerometer and (mostly still untapped) ability to play games against others over Wifi or 3G make gameplay compelling.
Social Gaming Network (among the first to exploit the iPhone accelerometer to create Wii-like games), is coming out with a new jet fighter dogfight game. The graphics are stunning, and you can fight against computer opponents or other people playing the game.
This isn’t the first iPhone dogfight game (Flying Aces and Top Gun are popular), but the graphics are way beyond what I’ve seen with the other games, the social fighting aspect is a first and unlike those games, SGN’s will be free. I had a chance to play it this morning in our offices, a video of that demo is below.
The application hasn’t been named yet and is still a month or so from launch, but SGN says if you email launch@sgn.com they’ll respond back when the game launches. The game will be free, and eventually users will be able to pay to upgrade their jets and weapons. In the first version users will train and add levels, but when the iPhone 3 comes out this summer, they say, a war is going to break out.

Can’t wait to get my hands on this one!
I’m wondering what stops developers to use the Wifi or 3G to build interactive games for iphone? Just curious (playing with computer is fine but playing against a human…THAT is awesome)
3G is FAR too slow for anything interactive. WiFi could be done but for optimal performance you need to open a direct socket with the game-server. Networked games do this all the time by opening up ports on your computer so they can tunnel data over to you. But it’s a bit harder on a phone since you’re almost always behind your wireless router’s firewall. Bluetooth is going to change all this with OS 3.0 by allowing iPhones to directly connect to one another without needing a centralized game-server.
Got it. Thanks!
F**K TRENT REZNOR!!!!
Wow, f**cking state of the art. well done
I love HD. Anyone else notice Marc Davis’ b-card (Chief Scientist of Games @ Yahoo!) is in that movie..
sorry, that’s Early Stage Products – not games…
oops
what can i say.. it’s a WOW!
I think that the iPhone has yet to reach its potential as a gaming machine :0)
This looks great – I’d love to have a go at it.

I’m done with any game I have to tilt my iphone to use. Typically (and this looks similar) the controls are only somewhat responsive and/or laggy. It’s been the case with every racing game I’ve tried. Not only that, it’s jarring to the game experience, and really only cool in concept. No one shakes my monitor when I game on desktop or moves the TV when I play a console.
I think the iphone shines in puzzle games, or games where you press/drag the screen, but the tilting is just horrible.
Doesn’t look as good as Top Gun
Why are you saying its awesome if you couldnt even play it?
You spent the entire time upside down LOL
I hate these kinds of games. Someone invent a decent ten pin bowling or boxing game for the iPhone.
very cool! great job sgn!
i think someone needs to do an iphone give away
hint hint lol
Stunning? Far from it. Tilting controls are irritating as hell. Give me Ace Combat on PS360 instead por favor.

So dog fight game isn’t about two dogs fighting each other..
am i really the only person that doesn’t play games on their iphone?
This game looks seriously SWEET! I can’t wait to try it out.
you ain’t no Maverick, you crashed on your attempt to do a fly-by
What’s nice is that our expectations for the graphics quality is lower on the mobile platform, enabling opportunities for garage-game companies to succeed. Imagine seeing this exact game on Xbox 360 or on Xbox live, I don’t think the game would receive that much attention.
Me and a colleague were just discussing about Top Gun and flight sims after I posted about Paramount’s new Top Gun game (http://www.onem...top-gun-iphone/). This one’s going to make him regret getting something other than the iPhone!
Now this is my kind of game!!! I think i’d have a blast playing it!
