It's things like this and the proprietary nature of every thing Apple that I don't buy or use there products. No More “Power to the People”.

When did one person, or small group of people, gain so much power; that they can make decisions about other peoples lives? I have certain places I can’t smoke any more and TV shows I can’t watch on TV any more…
“Those who would sacrifice freedom for security deserve neither” -Ben Franklin.

Life was great at one time: There were separate places in restaurants for smokers and non smokers, hell you could even smoke “IN” the bar. You even had a place in a theater for smokers and screaming kids. Now people give you dirty looks if they see you smoking in your car going down the damn road. Yes I know smoking is bad for me. Hell, it is my life and my body I’ll smoke if I fell like it. I’m not trying to force my ideas or thoughts on any one -to- smoke. So why do they get to tell me when, and where, i can smoke. What the hell’s next? Are they going to make a law saying I can’t take a shit in a public bath room, or the only place I can smoke is in my own home.

What the hell is it with some TV channels. One day you’re watching a show you really like; you get to the end of the session and you’re like, “WOW I cant wait till the next session to see what happens”. Then, when it’s time for the next session to start, the shows not on and you think, “well maybe they’re on a new night-and-time or something”. You check the TV Guide and don’t see the show anywhere. You check the web sight for the channel the show comes on and there’s nothing that you can see right away to say what is going on. You start looking all over the net, and finally! In some small blog, or post on some site, you find out that the channel has some new person running things. They have decided to just pull the plug on this show, and start running some show that is more like a show found on every other channel. Just because the first show’s “Target Demographic” was not watching the show. Forget the possible thousands or millions of people from a “different Demographic” that like the show. Who cares about trying the show on a different night and time. Just pull the show and don’t say any thing to any one. (’Dead Like Me’)

Something must be done! Now I know that not every one likes smokers or the same TV shows, but the idea of ’so few making all the rules for so many’; not realy caring about how it may feel to the people it will affect. It just doesn’t seem right. I know there are rules and laws for a good reason. If you take a good look at the way things are going. Then you will see that in the, possibly, not-to-distant-future. It may be that the things people “can’t do” will be more than the things that people “can do”.

So speak up people! Because if you don’t speak up for yourself now, you may find you’re not able to later. Because someone may just decide that your voice just does not matter as much as theirs and take it away from you.

If they so chose, they could blacklist certain websites from being accessed via Safari.. The point here is that they choose not to do that. They set a standard in allowing the "offending" content to be accessed through iTunes and Safari, and break that standard by not allowing that same content to be accessed through their app store. It's inconsistent, and I'm sure it's frustrating.

Ugh.. It's not about "unfair" censorship. It's about inconsistent censorship. They set a standard by allowing the same content to be accessed through other outlets that they ~control~, and then break that same standard by rejecting it in this one.

The point is that the same person is not likely to review the same content more than once. This creates a frustrating cycle of trying to meet a standard that's neither defined, or maintained consistently.

It seems you're missing the point. Don't worry.. You're not alone there.. :P

The rant (yea, agreed, it's a rant.. be sure to let your friends and family know you'd be happy to be called a pussy the next time you get annoyed with something and attempt to vent about it) was explicitly in regard to the inconsistent review process, and the lack of transparency. His goal is obviously not to "stick it to the man", but to deliver his media to the people that want to have it. Obviously, this goal is much harder to reach when the response from those who are controlling his distribution is "Sorry we didn't tell you before you wasted $XXXXX developing your app, but we don't like _________. Remove it, and at some point we'll let you distribute your work." What happens when he resubmits and the next App Store censor finds something else they find "objectionable"? (Yes, as is clearly stated in the contract, they allow individuals to determine what's objectionable based on personal values. (".. or other content or materials that in Apple's reasonable judgment may be found objectionable ..")

The problem is that the agreement is as broad as it is in it's definition of "objectionable content" to begin with. The point he's making with iTunes and Safari is that the content is delivered in the same way through his app as it is in those; you still have to hunt the content down. The decent thing for those at Apple to do for the developers that are creating the App Store's success (there would be no App Store success if it weren't for the apps.. can't argue that), would be to provide a clear and detailed list of what will be rejected, and what limitations are set as pertains to the content that can be accessed through the app.

Anyhow, I'm not trying to call you out personally.. I'm just saying (to all of you): Pay attention. :)

[...] Trent Reznor has publically given his 2c on Apple’s approval process for iPhone apps on the App Store. He makes a good point that songs, movies and TV shows, that are quite violent or can be interpreted as offensive, are allowed on the iTunes Store, yet iPhone apps are not. TechCrunch has more details. [...]

Hate IS 'just' a feeling, Sampson.

When the FEELING of hate 'motivates' negative actions we might a problem.

You can hate me and it is meaningless to me, or anyone else, really. You can own a hatred of me that is just a mere feeling of animosity that goes nowhere forever. It stays contained and may even be temporary- like if I call you a total stupid fuckwad of chocolate starfishes, you will sense a fleeting hatred for me but move on quickly to other things, if you are intelligent and mature (which you appear to be).

BUT, if you hate me enough to try and drive an ice pick into my chest you've crossed over to the dark side where thoughts justify actionable harm.

The word FUCK is a mere exclamation. It elevates certain styles of communication into a firmer expression of anger, excitement, surprise, or similar:

Fuck you, biatch!
Fuck that, homey...
Wow, fuuucking cool, bro!
WHAT the FUCK!!

Fuck, shit, asshole, asswipe, all of the assorted 'ills' of language that pastors love to attack as satanic are, in fact, extensions of language.

Sure, there are appropriate places to use these words- I suggest where wise adults gather as perfectly fine since most of them are perfectly intelligent enough NOT to be offended in such a trite manner.

Frankly, if someone is offended by adult language where it is being used in a matter approved by the particular forum it occurs in they would do well to just move on to less offensive pastures, really.

A word means what YOU take it to mean. I don't find FUCK objectionable because I have a brain and realize that there a lot worse things out in the big bad world then a few four letter words.

Equating words and their meaning to such a serious theme such as murder just goes to show that purported intelligent beings that want to twist language (that has no meaning unless you give it meaning) to sow fear of nothing more then ink on a page. If you equate fuck, shit, cunt and piss with anger and anger with murder I have a great shrink in the SF area you should speak with.

And I am sure that Carlin put more though into the 7 words you can not say then you realize. More though then you put into the above post that is for sure.

Ian, yes, they are "just words," just as hate is only a feeling, and murder is only an activity. No word stands alone autonomously on it's own. It's tied to many more things, such as emotions, intelligence, intent, etc.

Carlin was ignorant to suggest that swearing is "just words," demonstrating his profound lack of thought regarding the issue. That isn't to say swearing is bad in general, only that it's not merely "just words," any more than hate is "just a feeling," or murder is "just an activity."

Wow, lots of self righteous people bashing Trent, NIN, and the manner in which he communicated his FRUSTRATIONS. Look at yourselves people? Are you always calm, cool and composed when dealing with adversity? I think not. Get off your high horses because no one is perfect.

As for his language, as Mr. Carlin would say they are just words! Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, Cocksucker, Motherfucker and Tits! I suppose that makes me intellectually inferior to the rest of you superior assholes.

Yeah....I agree with Reznor. Fail on Apple. If they don't "get it together" I see more pwned iPhones and pressure to unlock them as well to other networks for 3rd party apps to reign supreme.
