With the news that Facebook is going to begin allowing developers to incorporate full streams into their applications, developers are scrambling to get their apps up to speed. This morning we got our first look at the upcoming new version of Seesmic Desktop, and now we’ve learned that Xobni, the popular Outlook plugin that helps make Email easier to manage, will be going live with a new upgrade beginning at 6 PM tonight. Because of the way Xobni is built users won’t have to download an upgrade either – all changes will be server side.
Up until now Xobni has included some basic Facebook contact information, including profile photos and status updates, but it wasn’t as comprehensive as your full Facebook news feed (you couldn’t see how your contacts were interacting with each other, for example). Now you’ll be able to see this information at a glance directly from your Outlook mail client, which is obviously far more efficient than having to manually check your Facebook page.
Unfortunately, Xobni is still available only on Windows machines, so Mac users are left in the dust.

hey i also did a quick hack to test out the new features. It allows you to tag your facebook posts and track the trends: http://www.face...?id=76279069833
God forbid anyone should have to use Outlook.
why? name a better exchange client
Exactly
Google Apps?
I {heart} Xobni!
Xobni CPU Load > Two DOOM 3 Instances.
OUTLOOK.EXE using 280K and XobniService.exe using 39K on my machine right now. I don’t know how much of Xobni’s load encroaches on Outlook, though.
Have you used the latest version of Xobni (1.7.3)? We just launched it a few weeks ago and it is a lot leaner than previous versions. There are also settings to decrease load even further by indexing less frequently and even the ability to only load Xobni when you want to use it, rather than by default with Outlook.
I’m still on 1.6.3. Doesn’t Xobni auto-update?
You will get auto-updated in the next couple weeks (we roll them out over time). If you go to http://xobni.com/download and get the new installer it will recognize your existing version and update you.
xobni.com may already be worth $1 billion. Long live web 2.0 No recession. http://iamned.com/blog/ BIDU beats wallstreet estimates.
moron
Too bad FB is blocked at work.
I was wondering if this would get around the block. Boo.
For those of us in IT lockdown, is there any work around to get this installed without admin privileges?
for clarification: referring to Xobni, not the update.
You do need to have admin privileges to install Xobni (or any software, I believe).
If your IT folks have any specific questions about allowing Xobni, feel free to send me an email and I’ll get them connected with the right folks. evan at sutherlandgold dot com
FYI I work with Xobni’s PR firm.
Xobni is an amazing product and this will make it even better.
XObni, the perfect add-on if you have too much RAM. Plus, its regular crashing of Outlook helps prevent carpal tunnel…
Xobni is using about 20mb of my ram right now. Outlook is using about 230mb, so those combined are around 2/3 of what Firefox is taking up. Have you tried to newest version–1.7.3, mentioned above? It is quite a bit faster, check out the blog post on it here: http://www.xobn...7-no-more-beta/
As I mentioned above, I work w/ Xobni’s PR firm.
I guess the integration is good if you don’t separate your personal life from your professional life.
I use Outlook for work. I use Xobni for work.
I do not use Facebook for work.
A Xobni for Hotmail/MSN Messenger (or Windows Live or whatever it’s called this month) connecting to FB is something I could definitely use.
How is FB going to make money when the stream is on other sites and apps like Xobni? Since users will be able to find out what’s going on with their friends via sites other than facebook, pageviews would likely decrease. This strategy makes sense for Twitter that doesn’t have ads to begin with but not sure how facebook would pull it off since all it’s revenue comes from advertising.
How is Facebook feed in Xobni is going to increase the email management/productivity?
What kind of a value is Xobni adding to the UX?
Facebook is already a distraction for most of the people during business hours. Many companies (including MSFT) are discouraging employees from using Facebook and “social” networking (timekiller) sites. I just don’t see the use of Facebook in Xobni application.
I used Xobni for a while but I just didn’t get why I want to see the the time statistics on emails and the sender’s xyz network profile. But I admit that accessing attachments was wonderful.
Xobni is run by great people, but I just don’t see the value. Hopefully, something usefull will come out of it.
too bad xobni slows down your pc
not interested
I installed it last night and I love that for many of my clients I can now put a face to their name because of the tie into Facebook. I can also view all of my customers emails without having to create a special rule for every single customer. I haven’t explored it in depth but those 2 features alone make it must have tool for me.
Xobni is an utterly wasteful gimmicky hack.
And why does their CEO look like a muppet?
CEO is a super smart and a friendly guy, I have listenned to him a couple of times in panels and forums. He’s got a great conceptual vision however he is way out there when it comes to the real market.
It’s sad that VCs are throwing bunch of money at directionless projects and create foam waves where everything looks beatiful but you can’t ride it…
What do you look like foo? Alec Baldwin? Justin Timberlake? Miriam Rivera?
Let’s keep it clean foo, this is not rant&raves forum.
For me Xobni is a gadget, nothing serious…sorry, but I really don´t need facebook for work, I need a tool which is reliable, clear and fast … just helps me for my work! Xobni slows your computer down, not really a help!
For companies more serious than Xobni is Lookeen! http://www.lookeen.com
