Seems everyone is worried about mySQL, no one is worried about the future of JAVA. This will definitely affect JAVA in some way.
I could be happy about JAVA slipping into the abyss with IBM than for the worse to happen to it with Oracle.
Yet I hope this turns out good. Whew!

The world isn't ending. There's a reason those opensource licenses are called what they are. You should read them once in a while.
Monty knows the value of open source software - a billion bucks or more! So also many other rock star programmers. There are people and there are companies that cannot thrive without a free/cheap fast db of that quality. Jon's blog highlighted that throughout last 12-18 months. So Larry is not going to butcher his potential market - that's like shooing your customer away on day 1. He can't do that. He'll start slowly, after 3 months, maybe 6. By then, we'll already have either an official open source Oracle-sponsored branch or a community-driven database equally good or better. With more players in the market you might see better variety and innovation.
Oracle will have to sorrow much if it does what it did to Peoplesoft. Larry is too wise (not cunning/intelligent, just wise) to butcher Oracle's image in this day and age. He can see the world has changed. He just needs to be in this race too - it's too big to miss.
As for SUN, well, I don't really know what got into them to allow this despite the fact that they have always had even <b>engineers</b> who could do business better. Austerity looks very cool, but this is funny. Someday, I hope, we'll all know what actually went on behind the closed doors.
It's not just two options - either Oracle burying SUN or SUN transforming Oracle from an open source point of view. I think what will happen is something in between - some money, some goodies, some deals and some freebies. Oh, by the way, you can't violate the GPL, thank the FSF for that.

Oracle will not kill off MySQL.....but, dont expect to see any more major leaps in functionality. I think MySQL will become a support only product, and will not progress any further. It will stay as the number 1 db backend for websites, but I think everywhere else it will slowly disappear, and be replaced by OracleDB

If Oracle get behind OpenOffice, then Microsoft will also be very worried.

Also Sybase must be wetting themselves at this point, especially if Oracle start bundling OracleDB with Solaris.

The big question is why the IBM deal didnt go through. This was a purchase that IBM had to make, if only to stop Oracle getting their hands on all this stuff. From that point of view this deal would have been a bargain for Oracle or IBM.

The next 2 years are going to be very interesting!

What does Oracle do? Is it a fruit company?

What does Sun do? And what is this thing called Java. Are they Coffee Makers and compete with StarBucks?

MySQL - now what on earth is it? I dont care.

When the world is turning to cloud computing (AWS with S3 and EC2), why buy a server company ("the network is the computer") as a software/data base company?

Is java still so powerful seen the ever increasing number of Ruby on Rails applications (Twitter, 37 Signals, ...)

Oracle has the policy of making you pay for any software.
SUN had the policy of giving away free a lot of software.
