its funny but i have the complete opposite opinion, the only consistent problem i have with the mighty mouse is the right click function, you have to make such an effort to be all the way in the right upper corner. I think you must be a grimey dude indeed, i clean my mouse and keyboard every other week and i find the keyboard gets yellowy when the mouse is still pristine. All the other functions work fine for me, the track ball failed once, and id say a handful of times, about 3 or 5 in the year ive had it, it lost connection with the computer, and i just had to click it a few times and be patient and it found it again, and the side grip, i guess you’re just a girly man, who misuses the term patronize.

I just switched from a PC to a Mac a few months ago. I love my iMac. I REALLY do, but I’m sick of having to clean the mouse like every other day, and I can’t remember the last time the track ball worked properly. I’m more than excited to upgrade to a Magic when possible.

However, there is one thing I will miss, and that’s the same thing I disagree with you on: Side clicking. I personally haven’t had such problems with it and it’s handy as can be when you set Expose to it. I’ve gotten so used to it, in fact, that I kept jamming my fingers while in a computer class that used a PC. *laughs*

I couldn’t help but agree with every point raised about the Mighty Mouse, other than one. On my Mighty Mouse (cabled), the side buttons are so sensitive that I’m frequently triggering Exposé when I didn’t want it. Apparently I should cut off my thumb. Or something. (Like use a different mouse).

Anyway, thanks for an article poking a small hole in Apple’s hype-balloon today.

When the mouse ball gets clogged up with dirt, put a little lubricant on your finger and roll it round… Fixed EVERY time in seconds.

Did Apple not realise the scroll ball would get clogged up when thinking back to the pre-optical mice, or are the designers so young that they don’t remember that far back.

THE MAIN PROBLEM, as mentioned briefly in the deluge of people complaining about the ball, is the lack of button chording.

This is where you need to press more than one button at the same time. I, for instance, use CAD programs where you pick up an object, holding the left button and zoom out using the wheel/ball.

Of course this doesn’t work on a mighty mouse!

I bought a retail boxed one as soon as they came out, used it for 30min then gave it to someone. I didn’t even get to the ball cleaning part. Now I use a MS 5000 notebook mouse on the move and a Razer Pro (Mac Edition) at my desk.

i turned the mouse upside down and cleaned the ball with an alcohol swab for a few seconds and it worked perfectly. aftershave on tissue is an alternative to swab. i am stuck with this mouse so might as well keep it clean.

I guess it is different for different people. The Insanely Shitty Mighty Mouse top shell pivots around an axis that is about at 60% distance from the front of the mouse. Knowing that I could not make myself press the buttons using fingers like it is done on any normal mouse. Instead I was using wrist muscles and carpal tunnel syndrime after two months of using it. Got the cheapest Logitech mouse and it works great.

Thanks, I thought my hands were somehow misformed. This is y first ıMac, I am otherwise very happy, but the mouse is just a nightmare. I’ll probably go back to Logitech ASAP – my last one was an MX700, and I loved the feel of it This Apple thingy makes my wrist hurt, and it’s only been a week.
I also have a gripe about the keyboard though (or maybe it,s just because of my Turkısh version?) Why is it that they are unable to write something as “daily use” as the location of the @ onto the key (Q, that is) – I had to systematically run through a lot of control-option-command plus letter combos to find it. All of my PC keyboards had the Alt-versions of some letter keys printed on…

Indeed. The mighty mouse sucks.

Here’s my selection of the best mice:

Logitech MX510 (great precision, comfortable and the extra buttons are actually useful). Although I think they’ve replaced that with the MX518 now.

Microsoft Intellimouse 1.a1 (the v3 was the best they ever had but they stopped making them a few years back).

Razer Diamondback or Copperhead (they’re both pretty similar and will definitely be my next buy).

Totally. After I used up three mighty mice in one summer, I plugged my TEN YEAR OLD Microsoft mouse in, and am happy ever since. The mighty mouse sucks so much!

Next in line: the 99 Euro (140 USD) adapter I have to use to attach my 30″ Apple Cinema Display to my new MacBook Pro, which uses both the mini display port and one USB port* and makes the display go black every so often. F*ck off, Jobs!!!

*) Also great in combination with the MacBook Air, having only one USB port and the external DVD drive that can only be plugged in directly, and does not work on the display’s USB hub. Want to rip a CD? Unplug your display! Seriously, f*ck off, Jobs!!!

No matter how much I love some Apple products, these are things that would NEVER hit me on the PC platform with its diversity of producers and products.

The mouse sucks so bad. scrolling is a nightmare, have to clean it almost EVERYDAY to keep it working, I hate it so much… it is the worst mouse I have used in the last 10 years.

Say what you (you meaning people in general, not you specifically) will about Apple products, but you can’t deny that they can take quite a beating. I know someone who had four ipods in their SUV when they got in an accident – they fell asleep at the wheel, the car rolled several times and was completely mangled (I saw pictures, it was nuts, the driver would have died if he hadn’t been limp from falling asleep) – all four ipods, despite being lose in the car with no cases and being thrown all around, still work perfectly.

Wow, I’ve been using two different wireless Mighty Mice (at my office and at home) for two years straight now – and I have had exactly NONE of the problems you describe in this article.

This is quite surprising since some of your issues should be almost user-independent, like the battery drain for example. But no, I don’t recognize any of the probs. On the contrary, I really love that mouse – and I often recommend it to friends and colleagues.

Still interesting to notice that the user experience can differ this much. So, I find this a good article anyway. Thanks!
