Maybe writing an educational article about "helping" people pursue a career in this field, instead of writing about how you got it handed to you, might give you more positive feedback. I'm not looking for an argument, just looking for some help from someone with experience in the field. Thank you in advance. It's great for you that you were just able to stumble into a reporting job with no experience, but that is NOT possible now. I'm fighting my ass off for a $25,000-odd reporting job at a 40,000-circulation daily in rural Illinois against people who had worked at the Sun-Times for years and are now laid off. I have pretty sick qualifications for a recent college grad--2 internships in radio and print, am a contributor on a popular blog, tons of good clips, University of Chicago degree--and can't find a goddamned job in this field because I'm competing against the tens of thousands who were laid off and willing to work for scraps (and no, they're not all old dinosaurs commanding huge salaries). Making the argument that j-school is a waste of time because a reporting job just fell in your lap is ridiculous. I agree that you shouldn't go to j-school, but you shouldn't not because you can stumble into a job without it: it's because you probably won't get a job, period, no matter how hard you try.
