Guys, this is a very interesting post. I am originally from Miami, and I have actually been living in Shanghai for more than two years.
A lot of what you guys are saying is true, and a lot of what this post details is true.
The biggest thing about China that no one really mentions here are the invisible market barriers. IE Communism and the will of the government.
Case in point, I know of a company that posts event and party pictures. After only a few months they moved to the second position in the market, generating millions of hits a month - just for the city of Shanghai. A crucial component of this platform was its interaction with Facebook.
Guess what, Facebook is now blocked in China. When I say blocked, I mean it is impossible to get to it. A nationwide firewall prevents any user inside the country from accessing that domain. Same thing with youtube. I am sure I don't have to tell you what happened to that company that so heavily depended on facebook. Almost overnight they went out of business. They did nothing wrong, they played by the rules, and when push came to shove, the received no warnings, no notifications. One day when they woke up, everything they had worked for and invested in was completely gone with no sign of ever returning.
This was in May, around the time of the riots in Xinjiang, and Facebook has yet to return.

QQIM ~370 Mio.) – „a conglomerate of consumer-facing web services“ – vergleichsweise erfolgreicher bei der Durchsetzung von Gebühren für diverse Dienste und Produkte? Eigenen Angaben zufolge generiert das WSN von Tencent mittlerweile sogar mehr Umsatz ($1 Mrd. in 08) als Facebook (~$300 Mio. / ~200-230 Mio. User) und MySpace (~$800 Mio. / ~120 Mio. User) (venturebeat.com). Es ist zu vermuten, dass in beiden Fällen die Erlösmodelle durch einen gewissen „cultural mindset“ in der Mitgliederschaft begünstigt werden und folglich in WSN, neben der Größe, andere Erfolgsfaktoren den monetären Erfolg beeinflussen: “the astronomical growth of China’s social networks can be attributed as much to its massive market size as to its cultural norms and values” (techcrunch.com).
I'm doing web development in China right now, I have to say western websites have a lot to learn from Chinese in terms of offering services, virtual or not, in exchange for micropayments. QQ users can go to a corner store and use real money to purchase Q dollars, and then use their Q dollars online to purchase a range of virtual gimmicks and services, such as clothes for their avatar, etc. The user is happy because they did something with value to them for a very minimal price, and the website has been successfully monetized even by receiving such a tiny micropayment. However they receive so many so the revenue is very high.
