Google just rolled out a search autocomplete feature for Gmail; If you turn on “Search Autocomplete” from the Labs tab under Gmail Settings, you’ll get suggestions in your search box while you are typing like you do in Google’s search box.
The search feature is pretty easy to use and definitely helpful. If you are looking for a contact, you can just type a couple letters of the person’s first or last name and the feature will provide a list that matches the search query. Google has added some advanced features like the ability to search in specific places (e.g. in chats or sent items), or search for messages with attachments by certain type (e.g. docs or photos). But finding that email from six months ago among the tens of thousands in your archive just got easier.

Very useful. Thanks Google.
I 2nd that, very useful. I’m very happy they added this, I can see using it all the time. Thanks for the article, I didn’t realized they released this.
Cool down
Already it takes too much of download of scripts. 5MB is the limit for gmail?
Testing it now, thanks for the tip. So far I like it. Gmail Labs makes email more interesting, and fun.
what gmail really needs to be able to do is partial searches, if I want to know someones mobile number and I know I’ve chatted to them about it I can do
in:chats person
to get all the chats I’ve had with them but I can’t do
in:chats person 077 or in:chats person 077*
to find out what mobile number they’ve given me..
Agreed. It’s shocking to me that a company as known for search as Google doesn’t allow partial word or wildcard searches in GMail. Yahoo Mail’s search capability is MUCH better (as is, arguably, its web interface).
Seriously? You have got to be kidding. Yahoo Mail’s web interface sucks, compared to Gmail’s interface.
Basically they are crawling on your data and indexing. Is it a good thing?
It’s OK at the moment. But if they plan to use the data for another purpose then they’re crossing the line.
No. It is not a good thing. Also your emails are stored remotely on servers owned by corporations. And anything you do online actually goes through your ISP. And then there are many routers along the way etc. Please stay away from the internet.
Where did I put that roll of tin foil…?
Finally!
Meh. Not that useful for archive searches. Sort by rank like organic search would be better. I’d like to see keyword (positive or negative keywords) to filter results — like how Tahoma did.
So is Gmail out of beta yet?
Who cares?

GMail increasingly better
It seems to be working for contacts only?
“Search Autocomplete” for gmail?! well, not a bad idea at all, I’d say …

Autocomplete/suggest functionality can be quite handy! Here is one implementation (plug) that may interest people: http://sematext...o-complete.html
Yahoo has had this for a loooong time. Thanks for catching up Google.
Nice. Just twittered it:-) http://twitter....om/BrianBentzen
