Only just got to reading this now... though even more relevant after the Ashton Kutcher vs CNN 'first to a million followers' contest.

Kutcher started it... but it wasn't long before a number of other celebreties jumped on the band wagon, namely Britney, Will Smith... and even Opera for crying out loud! It's a shame really to see Twitter turning into what I so disliked about myspace.

But maybe - like myspace was superseded by facebook - twitter will be improved upon by a new player.

Yes, I completely agree that Spam twitters are at large, I could not believe it myself; Till now I thought Myspace was the only hell with fake profiles I was quite scared that even Twitter is turning to become one like Myspace.

I am little bit relieved right now because we have trust-building companies that offers online identity and credential verification. I have signed up with a free beta account at Crederity, http://www.crederity.com/ .

John-Bryan Hopkins, the @Foodimentary Guy -

I had no experience with Facebook or MySpace until I began tweeting on Twitter. So my opinion is base purely from my use and observation.

Twitter, 4 months ago, was a different place than it is now. It had very few big name celebs and the fellowship was based on real popularity and their their actual content.

This is no longer the fact due two main trends that I have seen.

First. Twitter has become a “Story”. The press know it exists and do not quite know what to do with it.

Twitter is a place where people of like minds can communicate with one another. A place where the little guy can talk to the big. All fish can swim in the same sea.

The only problem about this profound idea is that talking to little people is not near as interesting as talking to @JohnMayer, @Britney etc.

So there becomes a huge group of people who flock to Twitter to do the later and have no real idea of the power of this medium.

Thus the idea is cheapened…I hope this will self correct if the Twitter guys are smart…

Second. Twitter has changed its attitude about what it is. It was not in the business of recommending users to new people. It just let Twitter be….well Twitter.

Now they have a recommended list for new users, most of which do not in any way represent the strengths of the medium and worst cheapen the brand to any new user.

There are no @Shortyawards winners, tweeters who were voted by popular vote to be considered the best Tweeters on the medium. There are good recommended news outlets and some gossips but the rest are undeserving twitter users of high profile due only to their name.

The strength and attention brought to Twitter was during the 2008 election and how Twitter became a great place to inform others about @Obama. Thus becoming a part of the grass roots.

Those roots are slowly and painfully being pulled and withering as we speak and there needs to be a call to action to correct this non-Twitter like behavior of loosing the little guy.

It’s like the big box retailers are coming in and the others are becoming more limited on where to “Shop” for tweets of information.

My final arguments is the issue of collecting followers. As @Foodimentary I have made a conscience decision early on that I wanted to communicate to my follower base in a direct fashion and follow anyone who chooses to follow me.

People forget that unless you follow someone you will not hear what they are saying to you. I, as a Tweeter want to connect to as many users as possible. I work every day with what I believe is a unique and interesting idea. My brand can not exist without a following. I am yet a little guy still, that lone person in front of the computer tweeting and hoping my song is heard.

My mode of communicating is two fold, tweet simple information, creating a database of information for the user to see and use and a personal touch via direct messages to my followers who contact me. I am proud to say that I have sent over 80k direct & personal messages to my users over the past months. Letting them know there is a person there. Not boring the rest with what may appear to be gibberish and pithy to my other over 50k followers. This saves the content stream for all to enjoy.

A very small percentage of the top 200 Tweeters not only do not follow back, they do not have any way of Listening. This is disrespectful behavior. There are several ways to automatically follow people back if there are too many to manually follow.

The moment this behavior became acceptable is, in a way, the day Twitter’s music died.

Twitter guys! Fix this, represent the little guys once again and give them a voice or these birds may fly the coup as soon as the next social-media nest comes around.

MySpace, though it was the bomb once…Now it’s well Not MySpace

News Guys THIS is the REAL story.

The question is…do you care to listen and retweet it!

First. Twitter has become a "Story".

Thus the idea is cheapened...I hope this will self correct if the Twitter guys are smart...

Second. Twitter has changed its attitude about what it is. It was not in the business of recommending users to new people. It just let Twitter be....well Twitter.

It's like the big box retailers are coming in and the others are becoming more limited on where to "Shop" for tweets of information.

ALL of these social networks are implementing the exact same features as the others ones. I just noticed that twitter has applications now. It is an unfortunate trend.

In Scotland Bebo seems to be No 1 in social networking for 25s and below. Facebook for over 25s.
Myspace is for music. Keeping up to date with your favorite artists and finding new music you never would have heard otherwise.
New to Twitter but it can be good if you follow people with something to say- Charlie Brooker, Brian Limond etc.
People with something to say.
If you fit into that category then follow www.twitter.com/thegirobabies
