The new Twitter Rules (Oct 14) now specifically target "more follower fast" applications. Is the continued effort to fight abuse fueled by system overload? This was the case with email, where the term "spam" originated.

Great Post and great response to what appears to be abuse of a very useful tool whether it be for good or bad. I agree with Yisel. It's not the tool it's the user. We are a glutenous society that has an extreme infatuation with have MORE! At the end of the day, we've got to hold ourselves accountable for our actions. I personally use autofollow to reciprocate but also believe in establishing solid relationships with the Tweeple I interact with in the universe. I am a strong advocate for Good Tweeple promoting Good Tweeple as evidence on my site at http://GoodTweeple.Ning.com . At the end of the day, we ultimately influence how our overall Twitter experience will be played out. We can all make a difference starting today.

Amen! If I wanted to have a SM site dictate to me who I can follow or not or how many, I'd have stayed with FB! The answer it to stop spammers not people who have grown to love Twitter and who use it responsibly. It's very easy to follow or unfollow using Tweetlater and until Twitter offers such functionality it should deal with the actual problem of spam and not its evangelists.

You hit the nail on the head here it is quite easy to manage thousands of people on tweetdeck. Add a few permanent columns and a one or two for topics you want to deal with for that session to sort out all your peeps and you can actually manage tens of thousands of followers.

What most people don't get about those of us who follow several hundred to several thousand people is we follow people from all over the world, which is very different from following the same amount of people in your own time zone.

Could this be Twitter's attempt at monetizing a particular feature of their service?

Perhaps if there was less emphasis on how many people were following you, then it wouldn't be such a problem. Such a waste of bandwidth having so many messages flying around that people aren't even reading

I don't have time to manually add people that follow me. I have an auto follow from socialToo to follow back. Sometimes when I follow them back I get hit with an auto DM. That doesn't bother me. I don't care, I'm too busy to care.

Having a quick moving timeline doesn't bother me either. People I really want to speak with I DM so it's no big deal.

It's funny to me all the hang ups that people have around automatic things on Twitter. I don't think they really need to be on Twitter if they have all of these hangups.

I don’t have time to manually add people that follow me. I have an auto follow from socialToo to follow back. Sometimes when I follow them back I get hit with an auto DM. That doesn’t bother me. I don’t care, I’m too busy to care.

Having a quick moving timeline doesn’t bother me either. People I really want to speak with I DM so it’s no big deal.

Interesting that none of you are focusing on the REAL story here -- that the devs created a very special, privileged class of people for whom they personally turned on the autofollow feature -- a Twitter FIC if you will (feted inner core of power users who are friends of the devs in beta).

Well, geez, that sucks. I thought Twitter was open, free, democratic, blah blah blah. Guess it's like every other Silicon Valley operation!

Soooo...now this thing that the special A-listers and friends of Biz got will be turned off because...uh...other people who aren't in the feted inner core are using it. The horror!

Of course, Seamus is wrong that there are some people more special than others, who have "good content" that "isn't evil" whereas some MLM spammer is "not like him".

A platform like this should be neutral to content. Um, net neutrality, remember? How come you want telecoms to be net-neutral, but not your favourite Massive Multiplayer IM system?

Seamus, do the manual work of really noticing and following people if you are going to pretend this whole fake scam of "the conversation" social media is supposed to be having. Otherwise, admit you are just an email marketer and in the dregs of society.

I bet the next thing the devs do is put in an automatic block to followers unless they are opted in. Oh wait, that's like locking your updates lol.

While Biz has ultimately done the right thing to control spam on his system, this opens up moral and political issues. For one, it means that he has grandfathered the enormous advantage that the A-listers got in hijacking his system to do their broadcasting.

Given that you are so interactive, I don't think you'll have a problem keeping up the account without auto-follow. It's all a matter of taking those ten, fifteen minutes a day and going through your followers to follow back the new ones and to say a quick "Hello, new followers!"

I think you're doing this the right way. Rock on! (:
