Ustream, a live streaming video service based in Mountain View California, has laid off 4 people, or about 10% of staff, we’ve confirmed. At least two of the four staff let go were Director level or higher.
The downsizing has been added to the Layoff Tracker, which has tracked over 300,000 layoffs since last year.
Ustream has been in the news a lot lately and continues to innovate on the iPhone. The company has raised $13.1 million over two round of financing. The most recent round was a year ago, in April 2008.
Economy sucks.
We need to fire all politicians.
Politicians are a byproduct, Wall Street is a byproduct ..
How has UStream been doing revenue-wise? Seems to me like the demand for their service is large enough for them to start turning a profit.

Smart and responsible. I don’t see the economy getting any better. For 2008-2009, total layoffs are at 300,000 that’s rough.

Recession is just another excuse for people to fire staff. I don’t the rational of firing 10% of the people when you can just cut 10% of everyone’s pay.
If money is tight, I question them being at SXSW all week.
They probably planned for sxsw well in advance. Also, right now is a bad time to cut back on marketing.

Interesting, kind of iunexpected having in mind the growing business for them. At least half of the laid off are fromt he management – this is good for the company.
Maybe it’s just me, but the headline “10% Layoffs At Ustream” seems kinda comical when your actually talking about 4 people.
Why didn’t you use the headline, “Four, Yes You Heard Me, Four People Get Canned From UStream” ?

Maybe if they would start some good pay services they would be doing better. I know of several things I would be willing to pay for. I’m sure there are others as well. What they offer for free is great, but they need to offer extra things for those willing to cough up some cash.

Qik sucks… quality is not good at all
Everybody knows Qik can’t compete with Ustream’s size… or quality…
I tried both. Ustream is truly live. qik lags over time.
Actually Layoff is not the solution. As per my opinion Layoffs will drive our economy towards the crime

I know John and Brad. They are professionals and businessmen. These negative posts about them or the company are from a disgruntled employee who got laid off. It’s in her interest to stop the attacks against the company as they are not welcomed by many.

Yikes – too bad for Ustream. They had potential but it looks like they’re going downhill. Layoffs usually mean you aren’t making money….sounds like a downward spiral.
I use Mogulus…they’re decent.
Mogulus is very bad in my opinion. We tried them and their ability to scale large broadcasts was horrible.
