AdultSpace Gets A $1.3 Million Boost For Its Adult Social Network
by Jason Kincaid on March 10, 2009

AdultSpace [NSFW], an adult social network in the same vein as Adult Friend Finder, has closed a $1.3 million funding round led by a number of angel investors. The new funding brings AdultSpace’s total financing to $2.3 million since its launch in January 2006.

AdultSpace says it is looking to use the money to take on Adult Friend Finder, the leading adult social network that was acquired by Penthouse in 2007 and has filed to go public. The site says it will be upgrading its viral marketing efforts and perhaps most notably, to eventually launch mobile applications across all major platforms (though I suspect they’ll have a hard time getting accepted on at least a few mobile app stores).

Included among AdultSpace’s free features are chatrooms, ‘cams’, a classifieds section, and a personality test that the site claims has the analytical detail of eHarmony’s highly touted exam.

Also notable in the mature social networking space is Zivity, a site that features artful adult photos and a community around the site’s photographers and models. Zivity has raised a total of $8 million in funding, including a $7 million round led by BlueRun Ventures and Founders Fund.

  • Adultspace bought 1 license of PHPFox for $299 then spammed the crap out of their forums

    http://forums.p...read.php?t=7271

They got a million bucks and this is what they do?

My Social networking site was way bigger than AdultSpace(SiteSpaces) I shut it down last year because even a million bucks is not enough when the world is going mobile fast.

    • This is the first and only site I’ve seen get almost 3M that is based on a cheap PHP script from hotscripts.
I’ve seen FOSS based projects get way more, but not proprietary licensed scripts.

The adult industry doesn’t really discriminate though when it comes to technology. That’s what I always found.

      • Maybe they can use facebook connect, hope this does not violate TOS of facebook connect.

Websites yet have not implemented “anonymous facebook connect”, that only verifies name and age etc, but simply does not link to original facebook profile in any ways.

        • I don’t think PHPFox does FB connect LOL
Maybe they would have to hire a developer to do that???

BTW, My old social networking site is still valued at close to 15k
          http://tinyurl....om/coolsndomain

You can buy the domain name for a measly 1k. domain name only. I keep the tens of thousands of members in the data vault for So33t’s launch!!!

But you can have the domain, cheapo!

I need the 1k to buy more icons and compositions for my mobile software.

  • Site barely loads… that is not good, eh !

  • a porn site getting funding i am all for it

  • what so unique about it?

  • Porn schmorn! Who cares. If niche is where it’s at then porn wouldn’t seem like such a small one to do something with. I would have thought $1m will buy a lot of mobile work.

    • “I would have thought $1m will buy a lot of mobile work.”

There’s good money and bad money. Most software devs are extremely thrifty and have the inner greed factor of Bill Gates.

Investors will lunge at something on feeling. When you have winning software in your SVN, you wouldn’t take a million dollars with a 1% APR.

  • Who are the idiots investing in this kind of crap all the time? First of all, there is already an “adult” social network called xpeeps which has a huge audience and has been around for years.

Second, calling it an “adult social network” is idiotic. LinkedIN is the social network for adults. The only thing an adult needs in a social network is their professional associations, resume, employment history, education, papers they’ve written or published and a way to network with other professionals. Anything beyond that is just a bunch of self-absorbed attention-whore narcissistic bullshit.

    • Adultspace has twice the audience of xpeeps. Done sipping your Haterade for the day?

    • Why are you negative? Where did you get your opinions? (Out of a box of crackerjacks?)

All this social networking is part of the “turnaround economy.” Yes, it is much different than you are familiar with. Time to learn about the new “turnaround economy” that entrepreneurs are making possible.

Hopefully, the Obamanomics team will not tax this and other U.S. based businesses to death to fund their greed. If so, many will relocate offshore and Americans will not benefit from the new “turnaround economy.”

  • their top 20 women are all the same chick

  • So. I clicked through, but had no idea this was porn. What a crappy UI

  • How can Techcrunch talk about such a sucking 300€-script-site !!!???

I know several small companies that make great work, developping everything themselves for an adult audience and would deserve for an article in Techcrunch… more than this shitty website at least…

    • Firstly a business is ultimately all about making money not how much effort it required to do that, so if their revenue warrants the valuation, all from a €300 script, fair play to them.

That said we’ve spent a lot of time developing a unique (semi)adult chat/dating/virtual world product and I’ve not even had one VC return an email, so seeing news like this is frustrating to say the least.
We’ve got to where we are without funding, and we’ll be successful regardless having some money would just speed things up.

  • http://www.xgucci.com has 12 million invested already. The site is completely mobile and even offers streaming video chat on the iphone.

  • As a single adult, I personally find http://www.xgucci.com a very interesting place. Seeing that all the ‘high power’ websites are monotizing through subscriptions which ultimately hurts the CUSTOMER! You never know what a free completely user-maluable and user-mobile adult social network could turn into. I mean no one knew that myspace was going be with what it is today, right? With Zivity at 12, Xgucci.com close on the heels, this should be an interesting race to the top of the adult industry.

  • A few days ago I read somewhere (I don’t remember where exactly, a spanish blog I think…) that a small french company (I don’t name it to avoid ad) is launching a mix beetween Google Video and Digg in spanish and english, developping a bot and everything themselves.

But they didn’t asked for million $…maybe because they dont’t need…

This kind of project for example are more interesting and deserve to be known.

  • I can’t resist to add this: http://fantasti.cc and ask for feedback… Imagine what we could do with $1.3 millions

    • with 1.3M you could probably start by not using illegal tube site videos in an iframe on your site.

      • oh, and get a top-level domain name

      • What is illegal ? Those tube sites ? or using them in an iframe ?

        • well, considering 95% of the tube site videos are not approved by the content producers, those tube sites are using them illegally. Now for another website to take those stolen videos and use them within their website using an iframe is just …….. well, you can guess can’t ya?

        • I don’t totally agree with you John Doe. It’s right that those tubes have “stolen” content uploaded by users but neither more nor less than Youtube or Dailymotion…it’s just a different category of video :D .

And using an iframe is totally legal.. not very gentle for sure…but legal. And using iframe in this context is a kind of Robin Hood :) …it steals the thief, offering content to everybody ^^

  • There are some very successful adult dating sites usually hidden in the obscurity of the global internet – check out for example http:///www.gepime.com which is a major adult social networking player in Bulgaria.

  • I think it’s cool to see a company like Adultspace can get that kind of funding. Granted they along with xpeeps are the people who I consider my competition. I too purchased a $300 phpfox license to build an adult community before I really knew who was out their. While I had high hopes for my site, getting it out to the masses has been extremly difficult with no real revenue coming in. I have minor ad revenue and doubt I can ever compete with the big sites. I do have a mobile plugin on the site that converts the dispay when it detects mobile browsers…and Facebook Connect is availiable for phpFox as an aditional plug-in by a 3rd party modder. It comes with a pretty hefty price tag, but for some it would probably be worth it. Given my domain name, I doubt facebook would look to fondly at my site trying to implement it.
