This video interview with Hoffman was interesting. Rose did not let Hoffman finish describing his four revenue streams. Charlie Rose instead went onto a ten year question that didn't elucidate the current need to focus on answers from a bottom line perspective.

I agree to a certain degree that we are all entrepreneurs, that we are ‘running our own business ‘selling our skills, experiences and expertise to those who will pay us. Some of us are selling our time in exchange for tasks performed, whilst others are selling our time and creating value - in my view this is the fundamental difference – value creation.

I am not sure that every individual is now an entrepreneur in its truest sense, just like everyone who runs a business is not an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurship is about innovation, creating new value streams, taking calculated risks, being willing to back yourself and passion.

“Some people, at some stages in their life, feel a powerful urge to build an organisation that will do something, or produce something, that has not been done before. When they put these urges into practise they become entrepreneurs.” This is entrepreneurship, as defined by John Legg and Kevin Hindle in their book,” Entrepreneurship – How Innovators Create the Future”

One area of concern I have is- what happens when an entrepreneur driven company becomes a large corporation? It loses it's innovative trust, loses it's humane elements and becomes a quarter-driven juggernaut that starts sandbagging numbers and one day collapses(or contributes to a larger collapse). I have worked for and with start-ups and large corps and I see that in the latter, internal politics and dominance of status quo rules and innovation disappears. People have no voice against a faceless machine deciding their fate every 3 months. What does the common man do then? What is the remedy? I would be interested to know the views of people on this forum. This inevitable transformation is something Reid Hoffmann is not talking about. Surely Silicon Valley was supposed to be about more than revenues and margins? It was about dreams and the common good through individual prosperity was'nt it? All the more reason to have a steward?

Understand your views and respect those. However, still disagree with your points, though it is also true that too much of statism can breed incompetence and corruption.

I have to disagree with the statement that every individual is now an entrepreneur. True, we are all changing our careers from time to time, but that does not define entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is the art of creating your own opportunities (this is not the ONLY definition of entrepreneurship but most certainly a central principle of it - entrepreneurship is a fairly complex concept). People who change careers are not creating their own opportunities, they are just following different opportunities that they find on their way. They still think like employees and they still ARE employees.

Good points. I'm an entrepreneur myself, but I recognize most people are more oriented toward raising a healthy family in a hopefully more secure and more balanced economy than taking risks in the market, both ultimately benefitting our economy and society as a whole.
