This morning Vice President Biden went on the CBS early show to promote Recovery.gov, the website that will detail where all of the money in The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will be going. Unfortunately, he forgot the actual address of the site during the interview, explaining that he was embarrassed that he didn’t have the “website number”. And thus, we have a new internet meme in the making, as Biden follows in the footsteps of Senator Ted Stevens’s Series of Tubes and President Bush’s reference to the “internets”.
In Biden’s defense, at least he was smart enough not to take a guess at what the website might have been called, only to have an entrepreneural domain squatter grab the domain and start a porn site. The last thing the government needs is something along the lines of NBC’s hilarious Hornymanatee fiasco.
Thanks to Paul Kedrosky for the tip.

clearly he was referring to the IP address.
touche, sir. touche
216.35.173.236
try ::ffff:d823:adec
even biden’s not as old as ipv4
Who really give a rats arse about the site’s IP address??? The average Joe the not licensed plumber would not know what to do with an IP address if they received one with their McD coffee.
Dude he’s the vice president, of course he knows.
Shouldn’t it be “recovery.gov,” not “recovery.org” in the headline?
actually no it is .gov – .org is a redirect to .gov
Biden of camera was saying – “102.35.34.567″
“What was that gateway again?”
Jason, you wrote “In Biden’s defense, at least we was smart enough not to take a guess at what the website might have been called…”.
… we “was”?
“we” ? lol
Else, about politics: He is from a minority. He is American, lives in the US but has a dual culture. He wants to change the economy and he has a plan. Guess who he is
http://harrysel...-save-the-world
Gosh, you’re right. 9-11 was an inside job!
…and your point is????
Why has the video been removed from YouTube? Is the media trying to cover up goofs so as to not tarnish the image of the pristine new government that will spend trillions to “save” us all?
Nevermind, YouTube found it again.
I’m trying to find a version without the weird clip added to the end.
I actually went to Hornymanatee the day after Conan’s last show to make sure they didn’t take it down.
Just wait… we will not see or hear Biden for a few weeks. Remember that he and Michelle Obama were put “on ice” for several weeks before the election, because they would put their combined feet on their mouths every time they talked. About anything.
Now, Biden is not sent overseas on good-will missions –the traditional role of the Vice President, because he would constantly screw up things, every time he opens his big mouth…
I’d cut the guy some slack. He’s from an older generation (he doesn’t and hasn’t lived on computers like the younger generations) and has loads on his plate (e.g., tasked with keeping track of the billions the gov’t is spending in the stimulus package(s) – zoinks!)
Yeah, this isn’t really a commentary on his intelligence or anything. Just poking a little fun.
If you’re looking for material you could always just post a story about how Scribd or Vimeo or someone is handing over user data to the RIAA.
If it was Bush saying this you guys wouldn’t cut him any slack. Can we stop with the damn double standards?
I know, he’s so scary with his ‘incompetence’. We should instead have some slack jawed twitter user run a multi-billion dollar government, cause they gets the internets.
Our vp is a geek… ok sir i’ll ping the website number
You should be gracious in your Hipness…. It will go away with time as well.
Haha, I don’t think Biden is a dumb as Bush, but he certainly doesn’t have much of a filter for what comes out of his mouth!
is it possible that we ALL make mistakes? {seesmic_video:{”url_thumbnail”:{”value”:”http://t.seesmic.com/thumbnail/54xD3txAkC_th1.jpg”}”title”:{”value”:”is it possible that we ALL make mistakes? ”}”videoUri”:{”value”:”http://www.seesmic.com/video/B2U11vlrGB”}}}
Really? This isn’t exactly harsh criticism. We’re internet geeks, and it’s a funny gaffe.
Touché Jason.
The mainstream media does everything in its power to cover for Biden. We hear only a small part of what he says: he said at a press conference in October ‘08 that “Shaq O’Neil,” although very big, was probably the best baseball player in history…”
Yikes!
Well, the media wasn’t exactly unaware that FDR was having problems standing. If you want good media attention, you have to develop a relationship with them. Biden probably has (at least with some of the media), and the media disregards a lot of his slips as irrelevant (and they probably are). Bush had a great relationship… with Fox news. So we heard all about his slips because the rest of the media probably didn’t feel that they had any respect. Reagan had a good media relationship, so it isn’t just about Republicans vs. Democrats. It is about communicating with people. Even as a politician, you have to have some respect for your audience, even if it is a room of reporters.
For the sake of the ‘change’ it is IP address..
Give him a break, he did not have internet when he was 10 like most people here..
Who cares? Big deal?
Oh, so they want my url when they ask for my ?”number” ?!?!? Now I get it.
What’s with that little clip at the end of the video? I smell conspiracy theorists.
Biden is an idiot {seesmic_video:{”url_thumbnail”:{”value”:”http://t.seesmic.com/thumbnail/2Pw2E6D2fy_th1.jpg”}”title”:{”value”:”Biden is an idiot ”}”videoUri”:{”value”:”http://www.seesmic.com/video/JoSErcHRl0″}}}
You, sir, are a douche.
You’re talking to yourself, staring into the tiny cam in your laptop, retard. How smart do you think you look?
I guess the recession got you right? you are jobless bored and got nothing to do… you should go out and find a job, maybe Mikey D is hiring. Next time you want to show your face and babble why you dislike somebody make sure you have a good argument you deuchebag!!!
He was not referring to the IP address.
Does it mean he is stupid – no.
Is this is unquestionably funny – yes.
If Bush did this there would already be memes of him teaching website numbers to cats.
Lighten people. It is funny.
this is a truly fascinating story; i’m really glad you all covered it. i think i’ll bookmark it so i can go back and read about it again and again.
What’s the problem with forgetting something? It just seems to be used as a really, really poor way to justify people’s original notions that either Hillary should have been the VP pick or that the whole Obama administration is screwed.
I noticed it brought Arrington out of hiding to make his political opinions known, so people complaining that Biden’s goof means the end of days is completely validated.
I don’t know how many people here have done a lot of teaching or informal presentations, but this “blunder” looked like a very simple slip of the tongue that isn’t unusual. When you aren’t reading off a teleprompter all the time you will categorize terminology in your mind. In this case, Biden probably just categorized number and address as methods of contact, which isn’t atypical for someone whose formative years weren’t shaped by the internet. So while speaking, his mind grabbed a term for method of contact. I’d say any questions about his competence are more indicative of the asker than Biden himself. Especially all the pseudo journalists and bloggers who comment without considering the importance of the event in question.

So what. website number , domain. who cares. only geeks know the difference.
Can we get better blog posts on techcrunch? maybe I am asking for too much now:-)
No, I think you’re asking for just enough. I think, whatever the political persuasion, gaffes like Biden’s or anybody else’s should be left to Huffington Report and Fox news, not a technology blog.
Just because what he goofed on was a domain name doesn’t make this tech, web 2.0 news.
We can count on Joe to never be boring! {seesmic_video:{”url_thumbnail”:{”value”:”http://t.seesmic.com/thumbnail/WcvqkzfxtK_th1.jpg”}”title”:{”value”:”We can count on Joe to never be boring! ”}”videoUri”:{”value”:”http://www.seesmic.com/video/ILscSeDq7A”}}}
i like your thoughts, now get back to work.
Just a non technically minded guy getting lost in the jargon is all. I think the series of tubes held such wait because of the guys position.
So sophisticated, ready to rattle off the IP address.
I tried dialing the website number but it came up busy. Why don’t they install call waiting?
Hoo hee. Snicker snicker. I bet he can’t tell us who Boba Fett is either.
Seriously… this is news? This is snarky geek humor.
Obama and Biden are worst then Bush – Biden is a moron and Obama is all hot wind and is a american fad who will be hopefully gone in 4 years hopefully sooner!
STFU – you talk caca…
Biden navigates the web via rolodex of IP addresses
betcha Bush don’t know what an IP address is… hahaha having too much fun with these coments.
Get ready folks. It’s going to be a bumpy ride. You aint seen anything yet.
Check this out about Biden and Son
http://www.auda...anford-company/
He just make a gaffe
Biden doesn’t need urls…he types in the IP address directly. Hence, “numbers.”
hahahah that’s how smart he is, maybe he is a robot or something…
what a meme.
Hello and welcome to the other side of the technology adoption curve. If you can create a web product that Biden uses – you’ve made it.
Change you can believe in is located at website number 127.0.0.1
“The Internets” is the lingo used by our military in everyday discussions about their IP technology infrastructure. Bush, as a wartime president isolated from the web and email by the realities of federal statutes, heard about these technologies and their applications mostly from his military advisers.
It’s lingo with a strong provenance. Educate yourself, read about the history in Bind and DNS and other titles by O’Reilly.
Biden is the most entertainment figure in government today.
It is 192.168.168…
Pretty funny watching these blogs that are so liberal. When are you going to wake up to your double standards. You vilified bush with his “Bushisms”….people make gaffs…he is just from your side of the isle. We’re all going to very sorry that we elected this team soon.
The larger point here is that Recovery.gov is a joke, political plasterboard paid by taxpayer dollars: an Orwellian sop to “transparency” on a massive, rushed bill forged by liberal interests behind closed doors. Biden knows that which is why he couldn’t bother to memorize a simple message about it that he was specifically on TV to promote. Hopefully everyone got their “Stimulus” HDTV upgrade coupons already so they could see this in its full glory.
Obamaics were vicious when it was alleged a P.O.W. who doesn’t have full use of his arm didn’t know how to use a Blackberry. Biden is the first of many great personnel decisions since.
MOAR TAX CUTS!
Am I seeing things, or did Michael just poke his head up like “Whack a mole” to see what’s going on and then disappear again?
Welcome back. You’ve been sorely missed.
Mark
Agree! Biden’s a hoot, highly entertaining in the dull world of politics
what a dumbass, we’re all DOOMED
Biden is a fucking moron.
CAN’T RUN MOAR DEFICITS (WE GOP MAXED OUT AT $1.1T)
and you are a dumbass
Politicians are idiots. Why in the world we give them so much power and money is beyond me.
Yes, let your average MySpace user run governemt instead. Playlists on recovery.org and shots of you and your buddies throwing gang signs.
Hes old, it’s not his fault. Most of his staff is young and knows what they’re doing.
He is just a puppet doing what he is told, im not worried.
Perhaps he thought she was asking for the website’s IP address.
Hey, Techcrunch has wised up!
Tech is boring and there are only so may google, apple, microsoft, twitter and yahoo stories you can print in a day that all say the same thing over and over and over and over. oh, forgot how VC are pulling back investments. Gag!
Throw some politics into it and stir up people to at least have enough interest to rant about goobers like Biden.
If you can’t beat Drudge, Huffpiss and Fox Join’em!
Got to admit this is more entertaining than another story speculating about Windows 7 or Kara slamming Yahoo for her spouse at Google. (Why don’t you ever print how that is conflict of interest for WSJ?)
Have to give him credit, it takes some guts to show up on live TV to talk about a website when you don’t even know the website’s address. Not sure what else it takes (or requires the lack thereof). They ought to put some money aside to stop identity theft or at least educate people better, wonder how much tax money that is costing us. Something along the lines of This digital security site.
