Facebook has just activated a new feature that allows users to leave “Like” labels on photos, notes, and other items across the network. The feature, which is nearly identical to one on FriendFeed, was first seen in a demo video last month but has not been available to the public.
According to Facebook’s blog post on the feature, users will be able to say that they “Like” something whenever they leave a comment. It appears that the feature is being gradually being rolled out, because I can’t seem to find it anywhere.
Facebook has stepped on FriendFeed’s toes with a few other features, including the ability to import activity items from third party sites into your News Feed and the fusion of microblogging with activity streams. We should note that it was Facebook that really popularized activity streams in the first place, and these improvements may well have come about eventually even without FriendFeed’s inspiration.

FB can emulate all of the features and functionality that are only niches elsewhere.
I think they have been rather nice so far rather than just continually adding popular feature niches of other sites to the Platform.
This is business.
But it’s a bit fugly when you’re already large, and snipe the little guys instead of fixing your screwed up site.

Friendfeed did not patented their intellectual property?? let them pay price..
Well it is Friendfeed’s fault if their business model is predicated on derivative product features that can easily be replicated by the companies that control the data.
There is nothing wrong with adding features on your product that you see elsewhere. It is simple innovation.

Wow, tagging is taking whole new paths.
I’ll be at Twistup tomorrow night if anybody wants to talk about Soeet and mobile applications for Android and friends.
I hope to see the LA crew there.
sorry, I meant Wednesday night. I forgot today was Monday.
What’s “soeet?”
Awesome…*searching for techcrunch’s facebook connect badge*
Another game changer here!

I’m glad to see someone finally acknowledge that forthrightly in one of these Facebook rips off Friendfeed stories.
Sweet
FF is fkd
Bunch of elitists talking to each other
No. Facebook had the dough and engineers to roll all this forever.
Give me a break.
Likes, instant status “what are you doing [right now?]
Exactly the stuff the college kids who lived by IM 2 and 3 years ago would have eaten up.

They could spend the dev time, innovating security from predators and make a smashing mark in history for themselves.
Hell, just make the site work.
But the board wants what their friends are talking about Twitter and friendfeed.
Excellent, now my friends can know even more when I’m creeping their pictures.
I’ve been waiting for this feature since it was first seen on the demo video. Nice addition!
Who’s sailing the ship while capt’n is away? You or John??
copybook i see is taking all the best and worthwhile features of their competitors and implemented it on their platform. Word of advice to facebook competition patent all your really coolllllllllllllll features before facebook steals it.
Ha, they stole this idea from me. http://thesmoot...m/facebook.html
How sad. I interviewed with them last year, and as part of their interview process, they make you write a paper on how you would improve facebook. That’s the only guideline and they expect it within 24 hours or so. I furiously put together my whitepaper and submitted it. And they loved it. I made it passed that stage but then they said, you don’t have enough s/w experience. hit the road, kid. And this was for associate PM, not a coding position. They new I wasn’t a coder, but they were happy to take my idea.
Wow, good change. but why can’t offer some new services? Since now, almost social sites always just copy each other.
Maybe they called integration, and this is real Web 2.0?
Virb actually pioneered the “Like” button before Friendfeed. Give credit where credit is properly due!
Its is good option for friends to express something which is unique. I will definitely go for this like button.
This reminds of when startbucks raises their prices by a nickel and it’s all over the news…
WOW, FB added a like button…cool
Leave it to Facebook to steal something from another network once againl
Great one, been waiting for it
How much does Facebook spend on bandwidth costs/mo & How much do they bring in again?
Please also put up a post when Microsoft Office has a new picture in their ClipArt collection.
I’m dying to know.
Thanks.
lol
where is the bit that friendfeed tires of it? Have they made a comment that they are not impressed that they are being copied by facebook?
be nice now boys and girls..lol
We’ve had this already in Sweden for a couple of weeks. Seems like theyre testing features on smaller countries first.
I Like This… Definitely needed this feature although it would work better with a Best-of-Day so that we can see what is the highest ranking story. Also if that is to work Friend-of would need to be implemented Facefeed FTW!!!
I like….
FWIW, Myspace has had the ability to give “Kudos” to User Notes for about five years. It wasn’t really innovative when FriendFeed did it.
Friendfeed? Plaxo pulse has had this for months haven’t they?
They stole this idea from tumblr.
like the feature, love the headline. well played, tc.
I’m pretty sure this was a Vimeo feature before FriendFeed was a thing.
Nice feature. I like it!
No matter how much Facebook tries to imitate FriendFeed, FF will always have one advantage over Facebook:
Openness.
I can’t see a person’s Facebook activity feed unless a) I’m a Facebook user, and b) in most cases I’m the person’s friend.
FriendFeeds can be seen by anyone, which to me is a distinct fundamental advantage.
Again, it’s the open vs. walled garden thing all over again.
I agree with Jonathan Wong. You can see my own FriendFeed page as an example
I have found a deviant delight in the latest facebook feature and “liking” things that I shouldn’t to make my friends feel bad. I wrote a blog about it. http://www.thec...gs-on-facebook/
how do you view all the things you like on facebook?
