[...] As we all know, Apple’s iPhone comes with restrictions that prevent owners from running applications obtained from sources other than Apple’s own iTunes App Store. Prior to iPhone 2.0 and AppStore, which came out in July 2008, jailbreaking was the only way to run 3rd party applications. This voided the warranty, yet hundreds of thousands of users went ahead with this. Since these applications were typically free, when AppStore was officially opened, many developers moved their apps there and now had an ability to make money from their efforts. There are many applications that are rejected from the AppStore due to Apple’s or AT&T policies of offering competing services (using the iPhone camera for video, laptop tethering) or doing things in “unsupported” way. Also some applications can be banned for being “useless of offensive” (example Obama Trampoline iPhone App) [...]

The fact that you are willing to ridicule anybody who is deemed a public figure but would hate to see it done to you (not talking about the TC gang but the maybe average american).

You puzzle me though... You state that Mike has an iconic figure (one statement that I can easily acknowledge as true) yet he is not to be deemed as a public figure.

A person is a person, regardless of it's status as a figure. But I'm aware that as a Non-American, this might escape my mind's grasp.

Now, i know it's just a game, I question if it would be even considered, had they opt to leave out the political satire. Read it as: I fail to see "the funny", I think they did it just for the controversy it might create, and to make us talk about it and maybe download it.

There is no reason why this application should have been rejected. It's not harming or making a mockery of any public figure. Maybe if the government was making some money off of the app then it would be OK.

You're not the only person who was rejected for a political iPhone application. A few weeks ago I attempted to release an application that contained 70 actual Bush quotes and it was rejected. It didn't violate any rules like your application and it's allowed to use sound clips from political figures.

What annoys me is how an application called "Wobble" that was design to make body parts of a person jiggle was accepted. The icon of their application is designed to look like the female breast and you see an actual silhouette of a nude female on their main screen.

So it's OK to publish such an application, but to release anything about our president isn't allowed? I feel this is a violation of freedom of speech personally.

I'm not a lawyer, but I don't think "ridiculing a public figure" is defamation. The rules are different for public figures which certainly counts all politicians--ridicule is quite protected as free speech.

Yes, Apple can censor if it wishes--it is not the government, and its editorial control counts as its own free speech. But POOR JUDGEMENT Apple. You certainly have the legal talent around to tell you that ridiculing politicians is protected speech and not a concern.

And while some in this thread belittle it, I believe that ridiculing our leaders, especially the president, is an IMPORTANT American value. The president is not royalty, not a sovereign or deity... just a citizen occupying an office for 4 or 8 years. We reaffirm this value every time we tell a bad joke about him (someday her) or create a tasteless drawing about him/her.

My gawd, imagine the uproar if this had been Bush Trampoline! And yet, the principle is exactly the same... it can not change with the perceived quality of the politician.

They're using all these politicians likeness's without any of their consent, period. I think it's a cool idea for a game, but I wouldn't allow it either.

Let's think about why Apple would want to control the style and content of apps, apart from those which have some strategic impact on their business operating model. It's about the brand. It's the same reason they don't allow adult apps. As a business, and according to principles mentioned often in these comments, Apple should allow adult content (videos, interactive, online, games, other apps/widgets, etc.) on their iPhone/iPod platform. Why not? Shouldn't the platform be open and free? Maybe one day in the future when iPhones dominate the market, but for now, Apple depends on its brand as well as on the quality of its products. Until people perceive smartphones to be a ubiquitous computing platform like PCs, and don't attribute any blame to the platform owner/operator for what happens in the platform, then Apple is right to be careful of what the allow to be sold in their App store. The stocking and sale of the app indicates some level of condoning, and Apple doesn't want to be seen as offending anyone. The actions in the app may seem harmless, but America is trying to heal and desperately looking for leaders. I don't think such crude taking-down of our leaders is the most positive, optimistic, respectful thing and Apple is doing it's bit to support Obama. Yes we can!
