[...] I concur with the Tech Crunch: Perhaps it’s because I’m stuck in a Munich hotel with the flu, but this most recent round of rumors about Steve Jobs undergoing surgery today is annoying me more than normal. The entire report is based on something someone heard someone else say at a party. That kind of stuff is fine when it’s a funding rumor and the flimsiness of it is disclosed. But we’re talking about someone’s very personal life here - someone who has repeatedly requested privacy. The fact that CNET, taking a few moments away from their Pulitzer Prize winning effort to determine the most hated person on the Internet, jumped on this so eagerly is particularly disappointing. Our own source, who is significantly more believable than some person at some party, says Jobs is in the office today in meetings and most definitely not undergoing surgery. Does that mean he might go under the knife tomorrow instead? Do we really need to know? [...]

Finally! Someone with some common sense. Thank you! I'm tired of seeing rumors on so-called, news sites. There are so many more things in which there are valid sources that they could be writing about.

Michael,

Either you are doing what you despise (reporting on Steve's health), or you doing something even worse:

Tilting at windmills.

Many personal blogs are out there that allow folks to vent about how the world is not the way they think it should be. Such blogs are fine for personal health and all, but I am not going to spend time reading them.

Your blog on the other hand has many thoughtful articles that I would miss, if I were to stop reading it. but you are pushing me!

Mind you: I have no problem that you provide very personal opinions about the future of cloud computing or such. Personal is fine.

But wringing your hands at this woeful world, affords me, your reader, with little value.

Criticism intended to be constructive. YMMV.

best,
Dan

Thanks for your insightful and witty comment. You are a true scholar.

Steve Jobs is a public figure and his health is fair game.. like it or not. so far apple has been deliberately misleading the public about his health. He is very sick (whipple's have a poor success rate) and I seriously doubt this is just a "hormonal imbalance"

OMG Arrington, you publish every rumor that you can get your hands on, call it news, and then you think you can lecture CNET? And, you get all righteous and - in an article about Jobs with a catchy headline - say that the media should leave him alone? You're just trying to jump on the news - and are pissed that you didn't get the scoop - but still try to sound all moral and full of integrity.

Face it - you are exploiting Jobs health news as much as anyone. You just try to trick readers into thinking that you somehow care.

When will we see well-researched, multi-viewpoint, unbiased stories that aren't just opinion pieces? Based on every post to date, the answer is "never."

I'm with scott, Steve will get better when he gets better...he needs time to get better instead of a billion people basically following his every move to see what he does.

Ok fair enough, we've all seen blogs write about steve's health and whatever that's fine, but now we should leave it and maybe update everyone when he actually gets better!

I generally love TC. However, recently, several TC posts have resembled gossip columns more than insightful technology news. If you want to talk about "up-ing" the level of journalism here, please stick to those same standards--don't post leaks that do more harm than help, discuss random twitter streams regarding distraught employees that have been laid off, etc.

Thanks.

Oh please, you criticize them when you spout nonsense about Jobs making a big deal out of his own employment? Where ever did you pick up that piece of nonsense?

Jobs has made it CLEAR for YEARS now that he is not the be all and end all of Apple, and that Apple will do fine without him.

But reality certainly isn't your specialty I would guess, then, would it?

Don't think so. As someone said in the comments, "people are interested in the CEO of Apple, not necessarily Steve Jobs."

APPL's market cap is $80B. There are a lot of shareholders, ISPs, and others vested in Apple who really want to know what is going on with its CEO. His health makes a considerable difference in their lives.

THANK YOU!!!
I read too much people writing bullshit about Steve Jobs and the potential impact his situation/health/communications have on Apple and its shareholders, but who cares?
Let's wish him to recover and be back at work as soon as he can.
Apple is a big company and they'll find their way.

That seems like pretty standard for the media nowadays. He's a celebrity, just like anyone else well known. It sucks that it's a part of society today, but there's not much that can be done about it.
Also, read that article about you being one of the most hated of the internet and was pretty shocked by what was written. Did they do any kind of research for that? All they would need to do is read a couple of your articles to get a different opinion of you.

Hey, wait, isn't a report about a report based on something someone heard someone else say at a party the kind of report you are critizing here. Didn't you feel the cognitive dissonance, writing that, Michael? :-)

Well Mike,

You're full of it! If you hadn't written this piece, then the other article would have gotten less coverage and Steve himself would have been left slightly more in peace.

Writing an article pointing out rumors about Steve's health, even if you refuting them or criticizing, is not really any better than spreading the word in the first place.

Am I the only one who thinks this is a cheap shot and an obvious page filler?

[...] The situation has now heated up a bit, with word that Apple has received a new patent that could directly affect Palm’s design. AllThingsD’s John Paczkowski notes that the patent, awarded January 20 for “Touch screen device, method, and graphical user interface for determining commands by applying heuristics,” includes features that sound a lot like those included in the Palm Pre. Meanwhile, the market seems to be largely ignoring the latest hoo-hah over the health of CEO Steve Jobs; gossip blog Valleywag wrote yesterday that Jobs was scheduled for surgery yesterday; but that report was widely rejected as false by various other bloggers.
TC story clearly planted by Apple to provide background substance to fictional PR reacharound that Mr. Jobs is healthy--when in fact he is most likely dying.

Why Jobs' health is relevant--becuase Mr. Jobs made his very own employment w Apple directly affect the overall value of the stock.

Can't have it both ways, fellas. No one wishes him poor health, but for Christ's sake, be honest about it.

The above story does not--IMHO-reflect any sort of reality of the situation.

Understand, Lemmings?
