This guest post is written by Kevin Rose, the founder of Digg and the cofounder of Revision3 and Pownce. Kevin, who has over 88,000 followers on Twitter (making him the second most followed after President Obama), also “bloggs” at kevinrose.com. He is an investor in Twitter.
Ten Ways To Increase Your Twitter Followers:
- Explain to your followers what retweeting is and encourage them to retweet your links. Retweeting pushes your @username into foreign social graphs, resulting in clicks back to your profile. Track your retweets using retweetist.
- Fill out your bio. Your latest tweets and @replies don’t mean much to someone that doesn’t know you. Your bio is the only place you have to tell people who you are. Also, your bio is displayed on Twitter’s Suggested Users page. Leaving it blank or non-descriptive doesn’t encourage people to add you.
- As @garyvee says, “link it up.” Put links to your Twitter profile everywhere. Link it on your Digg, LinkedIn, Facebook, blog, email signature, and everywhere else you live online. Also, check out the great feedburner-like badges from TwitterCounter for your blog.
- Tweet about your passions in life and #hash tag them. Quality content coupled with an easy way to find it never fails. If others enjoy your content, they’ll add you. Learn more about #hash tagging here.
- Bring your twitter account into the physical world. Every time I give a talk, speak on a panel, shoot a podcast, present slides, or hand out business cards, I figure out a way to broadcast or display my twitter account.
- Take pictures. Pictures are heavily retweeted/spread around. This one from US Airways Flight 1549 has been viewed 350,000+ times. For mobile pics use iPhone apps such as Tweetie or Twitterific, both which support on the go uploading.
- Start a contest. @jasoncalacanis offered a free macbook air if he reached the #1 most followed spot. That never happened, but Jason added thousands of followers…brilliant.
- Follow the top twitter users and watch what they tweet. Pay attention to the type of content they sent out and how they address their audiences.
- Reply to/get involved in #hash tag memes. search.twitter.com lists the hot ‘trending topics. Look for the #hash topics and jump in on the conversation (see #4 for links to #hash instructions).
- Track your results. TwitterCounter will show you how many new users you’re adding per day and Qwitter will email you when someone unfollows you after a tweet.
If you enjoy this content, add me at twitter.com/kevinrose, thank you.

11. Be a celebrity.
Hadn’t heard of Retweetist before, thanks Kevin.

Yea… Being a celeb doesnt hurt.. but just being yourself brings followers that actually care about what you are saying…

Oh Yea.. hadnt heard of retweet before either… I Love API’s
Truth is, there truly are 1,000s of ppl who are fascinated by the day-to-day life of celebs, even if they are just eating a cheeseburger & fries like the rest of us…
I agree with Daniel. To meet fellow twitters who genuinely share your interests, be as sincere and approachable as possible.

Kevin Rose is a twitter snob.. He has over 89K followers and he is only following 147 people!! He is like slamming the party door on guests!!!
this video by @perrybelcher explains it well.

Well, I must totally agree with you on this.
ooops forgot the video link. here it is:

Haven’t heard of it either, but will apply it. I just signed up for Qwitter. It’s like an instant critic ; )
@Akmal Why should people be expected to follow everyone that follows them? Would you really want to weed through a feed of 89k user’s tweets? Follow the people that interest you.
Yes, number 11 is also very helpful.
Got a long long way to go before @Admore is one of those
http://twitter.com/Admore
This is a great article title. Unfortunately, it is written by the wrong person.
It should have been written by a previously obscure individual who suddenly manage to become one of the leading personalities on twiiter.
Unfortunatey, by having Kevin Rose give his “secrets”, Techcrunch is confounding cause and effect. Kevin Rose did not become one of the top personalities on Twitter because he filled out his bio (secret #2) any more than Obama became the top personality on twitter because he filled out his bio.
This is like all of the silly Newsweek articles that talked about Google’s secret to success being the foozball tables that they offered to their employees. Once again, confusing cause and effect.

It is just NOT true that prior celebrity is a precondition: Here is a link to a guy with 22,000 followers, who is, as his site states (my **** highlight):

As far as Twitter goes, the “be a celebrity” tip is the *only* thing that matters, and is the reason why people like Kevin will never actually “get” what Twitter is like for the average person.
If you’re not trying to promote yourself and don’t have a ton of real-life friends on Twitter then it quickly becomes nothing more than a sea of mindless drivel from wannabe-celebs and “fans” who are just trying to impress them.
For the average person there is still no benefit at all to Twitter, but the people that write about it can never actually see that as they tend to already have their own band of followers.
For Kevin Rose to really understand Twitter, he should set up a fake account as a “normal” person and never mention his real identity… I’d bet he would soon get very bored of the total lack of worship… sorry, followers.
I agree with this.
But my guess is that Twitter is not really for “regular people” even though we use it. This info would be great for the people it IS for, those pushing something (their blog/product/film/etc.) and who need those big numbers.
I of course hope to be one of those people soon cos right now I only have 9 followers and they’re all like, my mom.
Hehe yes definitely! In Kevin Rose’s situation being a celebrity helps a lot.
For “normal” people it is harder to do it, but it is still possible to build a good Twitter following.
Follow people, be interesting, tweet helpful resources, answer to people’s questions, do twitter-bait and get famous twitterers to respond back to you…
I have collected these and other tips at http://www.twit...rketingbook.com
I disagree with you Dom. While at first I didn’t understand why people would care what I was doing, I found that Twitter was so much more useful to observe what others were doing. I’ve gotten tips on some of the best books and movies because of Twitter and now I’m truly glad that I am part of the social network. I contribute as much as I can when relevant.
That being said, http://www.twitter.com/phlacin
12. Making random speculations about Apple’s newest releases also helps with your blog or tweet content. (and increased follower count) =)
it works either way as …when you have so many followers you bcome a twitter celeb , else as a celeb you attract all these followers.

Mr. Rose:
Home Depot lays off 7,000. Catepiller plans on laying off 20,000 and YOU write an article on how to increase Twitter personal followers?
Question: Are you a freakin’ idiot?
Do you have any idea what’s going on the US? Do you even care? My guess: you’re some rich kid who never worked a hard day in his life. You are not connected with the REAL America.
Just like Arrington.
Pathetic.
I know nothing about Rose except for his companies… and I really dont care to find out his rags to riches story (if), but come on…

12. Come up with the 10 ways to increase your followers by researching them on the internet, write an article about it and post it on Techcrunch! Whats that, 2,000+ more followers already?
The @KevinRose Experiment on Increasing Your Twitter Following has begun. Testing tip #7 at http://tinyurl.com/bg5r9k
Yeh being a celebrity really helps!!
The real power of Twitter is not in how many people are following you, but how many quality and inspiring people you are following.
Building a quality following takes time, the only way to do it properly is to be yourself, engage in conversation with others, and add value to the people who are following you.
Share great links and your own thoughts on the world and you will be respected.
Agreed Eden!

Yeah…being famous is a good way to be popular on twitter. But it takes way too much effort. I can’t afford to spend years serving coffee in Hollywood just to one day make it big and get my Twitter certificate.
But you can do this…
1. Be funny…not stupid funny…but witty funny. Take me…I’m pretty much a slap in the knee. Follow me and you’ll come to know that.
2. Tweet often, but only quality tweets. It’s quality, not mass quantity. You will lose followers if you tweet nonsense too often.
3. Like my boy Kevin said…Re-Tweeting is great to get your name thrown around. Just be sure that when you reel people in, that you can keep them there.
4. Get personal. Tweet like nobody is watching. People don’t wanna read about what kind of coffee you drank this morning…they wanna know who you woke up next to and why she is wearing your pants.

Good tips.
However, I wouldn’t use Qwitter (http://qwitter.com/) – it’s too frustrating. I suggest to use Tweeteffect Instead : http://www.tweeteffect.com/ which can teach a few things about your followers behavior.
thanks orli for sharing tweeteffect. it seems helpful but seems to provide conflicting results with qwitter
How so?
@Orli
I don’t think tweeteffect is very accurate…
“In the last 187 updates you had no changes in your follower numbers. Loyal readers, you have. ”
Since I’ve only done 187 updates in total that would mean that no one has ever un-followed me, which is highly un-likely…
http://www.twit...r.com/ninjachad
I agree, something’s off with tweeteffect… it’s telling me in my last 199 posts I’ve lost more followers than gained. Based on my growth of followers that can’t be accurate. I like the concept though.
http://twitter.com/sarahlane
I think twitpic is great but I’ve found 12seconds.tv is a great way to get more followers.
A few of mine:
11. Follow more people. Find someone that you like, @scobleizer for example, and follow who they are following. Go nuts, twitter lets you follow 2,000.
12. Ask questions. This is my favorite way to get to know people that are following me. Also, this makes your follow list more of a community.
13. Not to get followers, but use Cli.gs, it’s the best URL shortener because it has analytics.
Oh, and follow me, because I am awesome. twitter.com/alexwilhelm
This emphasis on followers will leave you unsatisfied. Why? You can’t control it. So, worry about what you CAN control: who you follow. Follow better people. Get better inputs! If you do that the followers will come and, guess what? They’ll be better followers too because you put the emphasis on what really matters. Who cares who is following you anyway? It only matters if they think you’re smart.
Oh, and Kevin missed a few ways to get followers:
1. Survive a plane crash and Tweet it.
2. Get arrested and tweet from jail.
3. Have sex with someone famous and tweet that.
4. Start a famous company. Profitability not required.
5. Have Leo Laporte mention you on his show (worked for my son).
6. Have Mike Arrington tell you you’re addicted (worked for me).
7. Unfollow all your followers. Follow them back. Block them. Then unfollow them. (Worked for Loren Feldman).
8. Get into a movie.
9. Direct a movie.
10. Take pictures with MC Hammer at a TechCrunch party.
Hope that helps.
Do you have a link to this story? I’m curious to learn more about it. Thanks
Loren Feldman is an ass.
LMAO Robert that cracked me up! Esp. #7. I am still trying to figure out how that one would work LOL. More laughs and good times ahead
#7 works because one thing Twitter users really care about is how many followers they have. So, when someone follows them, or blocks them, or unfollows them, it catches their attention. Also, any time you follow someone it sends them an email. I just followed a whole bunch of people and you should see all the Tweets saying “thank you for following me.” That got me even more followers.
It’s a really lame game, though. I laughed when I saw what Loren was doing and what reactions everyone was having.
It’s why I just worry about the inputs into my life and try to get interesting conversations with interesting people. That’s all I can control and, anyway, it is a lot more satisfying to do that then worry about who is following or blocking.
LOL, I just tried #7 while watching cartoons on TV. As soon as I unfollowed the last person, spaghetti cat appeared! creepy.
What’s an MC Hammer? Is that a tool?
http://www.twitter.com/bigjohn
Ah!! These are the REAL things one should do. Kevin’s points are so old hat
P.S. I still think #6 was a set up between you and Arrington (may be because Arrington had no news on twitter to post that day)
I think you’ve finally written something I can like.
totally agree with Robert, it doesn’t matter how many people are following you, what matters is that you are following interesting people and tapping into their intelligent comments.
what you say is really true. its not so much what you write or who’s following your twit or how many are following it or whatever, best is to just write about something close to one’s heart, that’s when writing becomes a pleasure and the constructive comments that you receive and the positives you derive from them. are much more important!
a beer now would be nice
And the best way to get more followers is to publish a post on Techcrunch titled “10 Ways To Increase Your Twitter Followers”.

Yes, but what about all the twindustries I twollow? Will I be able to find good source of twoney to spend on twoducts for my twome? Kevin, I’m following you on Pownce.
Pownce ??? that was closed. Wish Kevin had done a couple of posts on that also. Might have got them few users. Wonder why Kevin was promoting twitter over his own service
Have always wondered that myself; diggnation, twitter and his blog, almost never plugged his pownce account (at least over twitter). Leah Culver must be pissed….
Look at the last sentence of the first paragraph. Explains everything. He never promoted Pownce like he did Twitter.
And Leah’s not pissed. She sold the technology and got a job at SixApart – why would she be upset?
I just discovered that Twitter is good solution for posting for job or work opportunities! In doing so you receive instant candidates (followers & non-followers) and you can instantly view portfolios. For me it beats posting on a job board!
What Twitter can be used for seems endless…. from a classify substitute to building your personal brand to receiving a notification that your wash is done and so on…
Ha, why take advice from a guy whose running a company into a ground? Wo cares how many followers you have if u cant monetize them
Why do you even think of monetization when all that you care is what you care about.
LOL, u’re right, i’m the only blogger cares about making $, probly why i’m the best at it, especially considering how few followers i have…dont worry little hippies, u’ll all be employed by me in the future
C’mon guys, keep going. I love to see a battle of wits filtered through TXT syntax and English as a second language.
Atleast Digg has some revenue even if it is losing money. But twitter has raised fresh money at absurd valuation without any revenue model. Recession . What recession ???
most important have a hot chick in your profile
Kevin Rose was already a name before Twitter because of Digg, etc. While he may be a perfectly interesting person, people aren’t following him because of these “tips”. I think these same tips have been blogged by any number of social media “gurus” or “consultants” trying to appear as though they’ve cracked the code of what makes 3,000 people follow one person, and not another.
And I think it actually comes down to 5 things (I’ll happily write a post about this, btw, Mike… just email me
)
1. You were already famous/notorious.
2. You were involved in a major event that attracted internet/public interest.
3. You fought with someone (see 1 and 2)
4. You are pretending to be someone famous/notorious.
5. You do your best to be yourself, and share what you think and what you know, whether that is marketing or astrophysics or lipgloss.
5 is your best shot. Stop taking advice from famous people on how to be famous. Go invent something big. It worked for Kevin.
Totally makes sense.
http://spraveen...ro.blogspot.com
Well said!
And may I add No. 6 to you list …
6. Get a life and stop worrying about how many ‘followers’ you have.
Hell, I don’t even use the thing and I have a shitload of followers.
I’d have to disagree to some extent, because I see people all of the time with thousands, if not 5k-15k followers, who don’t appear to be particularly famous (even in say Internet Marketing or similar insider circles).
What they do appear to share in common though are two things:
1) They follow back nearly everyone that followed them (auto or not doesn’t much matter), which would seem to make sense in what is supposed to be a social context. The celebrities of various types can afford to some extent to shut people out, but then you have to ask yourself how well they’re doing if John Doe can amass 15k followers as well.
2) They engage in a massive number of conversations, nearly as many as Scoble (Kevin Rose is a status update slacker by comparison, @scobleizer beats him 10x).
1) and 2) taken together maximize the network effects, as someone else’s followers can only see your twitter username/link if that someone else @replies to you or otherwise mentions your name as an @ (almost no one has the time or nerve to flip through someone’s follower/following pages to pick out people, the only other way they could have found you).
So, all of Kevin’s suggestions are useful, but they do not even begin to go to the heart of the social phenomenon that is Twitter. They are handy add-ons.
Follow me on Twitter, I follow back:

What? It’s like millionaire would give us advice on how to earn $30 with lemon stand. I could sum this up in one sentence:
“Use Twitter, people will start follow you. Or, if you’re web 2.0 darling, people will follow you whatever you do.”
I salute you, Capitan Obvious.
Is this correct, “He is an investor in Twitter”? If so, why is he not listed in CrunchBase, and why was he involved with Pownce, but investing in twitter? Seems like a major conflict of interest – or is that why they finally pulled the plug on Pownce, he had an opp to invest in twitter?
Please clarify.
Forgot a “A” in Calacanis

Can this twitter hype die already?
All people want is to have followers to read about their boring everyday life.
This is one of the few hypes I just can’t seem to understand.
It’s one thing if you’re a celebrity – nut everyday people tweeting about how the new tp they just bought feels so soft on their butt – plain ridiculous.
guess that is the perspective you see it from, but there is another dimension, yeah they are some people who use it for some really absurd things like rss feeds for their blogs, or how their cat felt ill, etc. guess you just havent watched the video that describes how to use twitter to make profitable connections. you should watch it :http://tinyurl.com/bmpg77 totally think your idea of twitter would change:
It’s about the conversations. The social context of all social media like Twitter makes it so that very little one-way broadcast/”megaphone” communication is tolerated.
And don’t try to sell ANYTHING to your first level friends/followers/etc., it tends to be perceived as a violation of social trust. That can happen eventually from the downstream network effects.
@tobi, for those same reasons I disagree to some extent with the tenor of the video you linked to, instead check out Perry Belcher’s take (admittedly more folksy than I would usually put it, but very true nonetheless): http://3on.us/social-money
you missed one:
be relevant.
Thanks Kevin for sharing your insights. And Robert’s comment cracked me up as clearly he didn’t use any of those techniques to get all his followers
As others have rightly pointed out, someone’s “accomplishments” outside of Twitter matters way more than what they “do” on Twitter unless Twitter is where they have their accomplishments.
A few questions to think about Twitter or any other social media involvement:
Social Media presence takes time, energy and probably will have an opportunity cost (you could be doing something else at the same time) so the #1 question is:
Why do you want to have a LOT of followers?
Hopefully the answer is that you will be able to give something “valuable” to the world and the marketplace.
So, the followup question is:
What do you have to share to the world and the marketplace that is “valuable?”
And the last question:
What are you doing today to ensure that you are building the credibility to share that “valuable” information?
Have a great week ahead all of you.
Best,
Rajesh

People like to compete for top places on a list everywhere you go. I won’t say I don’t care about the number of followers cause I’ll be lying to myself. You hear that’s good, you see celebrities or similar being followed by say 20000 followers and you wonder what if. Now, there’s the other part. Can I handle all of them? What do I have to give them? You can have thousands of spammers following you or the most boring people in the world and that does not make you a reference on the web. So whenever my stupid pride tells me I should have more and more followers just because it must be good, I tell to myself to have some more control and not get too addicted to it, cause I might get an overdose of silly extra work to do daily, disappointment for having to deal with people I don’t like, anxiety for not having more followers than say Michael Arrington, Robert Scoble or Jason Calacanis just mention some. Summing up, I think a modest amount of followers you make little by little, according to your possibilities and what you can offer to the world is much more realistic and leaves more time for other important stuff. By the way thanks to Orly for that link she suggested. I agree with her Qwitter is not working as it should.
