Hey Sandra?! Thanks for reversing the evolution of mankind about an inch. We love you. Now, if you don't mind we'll all just be carrying on here in the year 2009. Appreciate it. ;-)

It's quite simple why they fail: They use Unicast!

If the ISP's and providers would agree to enable Multicast as it's suposed to be, this would never become problem, unless we get 20 million Stations - and we might even still be able to support that!

Multicast has been final for 30 years - but nobody does it right.. not many, at least!

Actually I used CNN and Facebook: it took sometime to start but then it worken perfectly.
My experience mixing live event and live comments with my circle of friends is one of the things to remember on the Net.

iStreamPlanet (http://www.istreamplanet.com) managed the webcast process for the Presidential Inauguration Committee with Microsoft using Silverlight, FWIW. iStreamPlanet chose the features, integrated the player on the pic2009.org site, digitized the video onsite and off satellites, and ultimately delivered the feed. We had a half dozen people watching the feed in our office, and were grateful to see the event without hiccups.

I had absolutely no problems streaming video to my Mac or PC where I was able to stream CNN.com (where I used the Facebook Interface and shared my experiences with all my "Friends".)
I was also able to stream to my iPhone using the UStream.tv app that was approved by Apple and released only hours before the Inauguration.
Other streaming options I was able to connect to included some p2p streams of MSNBC and Fox News (the URLs of which which I will not name here) that were most likely not 'approved' sources.
I didn't miss one second of coverage. Not one.
I have a DSL broadband connection from AT&T for which I pay an extra $5 per month so I can get the 1.6MB transfer rate. (Total cost for my DSL connection is about $19 per month because I have a land line as well)
The UStream feed, which required the use of my in-house WiFi signal, stuttered and lagged a bit but I'm sure that was due to the amount of users all trying out the new app for the first time. Streaming on the iPhone today (Thursday the 22nd) is much smoother.
So...I couldn't be happier with the way it all worked out. Especially sharing the day with my Facebook friends as we all watched together.
Well.... maybe if I had a Panasonic 103" Plasma and HD cable. But then........ wouldn't we all?

Have you heard of NiFTy TV (niftytv.com)? It is a streaming technology using all the benefits of P2P (reduced bandwidth load on the main server) but without the drawbacks (super-noding, saving data on endusers computers). This is the future of live internet broadcasts!

I tried 4 different sites and couldn't get in to any of them. CNN said I was in the queue but then when it finally tried letting me in (after a few minutes) it failed.

The CNN p2p streaming application would have worked better for many people if it wasn't so stupid.

p2p works a lot better if you take network topology into account. We have a nice fast gigabit lan here on a /16, yet hundreds people were all receiving a stream of the same video. If instead of randomly choosing peers, it bothered to find local ones, the load on the (relatively small) internet connection would have been much lower.

And yes, multicast makes all of this a non-issue.

The BBC have experimental multicast streams. Unfortunately on my campus the web streams maxed out the bandwidth so the multicast was poor as well.

Actually, while on CNN.com, it prompted me to install the Octoshape plug in somewhere in the course of streaming. This is a P2P plugin, and the streaming was fine throughout the broadcast. I suspect, P2P was used where there was enough user density to allow it. The only downside was that the CNN.com stream was lagging 1 minute behind the TV broadcast (probably as a result of P2P). Fox was 2-3 seconds behnd TV broadcast and ABC.com about 10 seconds behind.

I watched the CNN feed the entire time, and I didn't have an issue.... maybe that's because I didn't install the p2p plugin (octo-something)
