Ustream has received approval from Apple for its iPhone live video viewing application just in time to watch the Obama inauguration live from wherever you are.
…as long as you have a wifi connection that is. The application requires an open wifi connection to show video, but it works very well. Audio is solid, picture quality is good but with a low frame rate. And users can both read and leave comments in the chat stream. Get it here (iTunes link).
We eagerly await the fraternal twin Ustream app that will let users broadcast their own video from the device as well.

Just in time for the Inauguration!!
This is amazing. Ustream rocks!!!
Sweet. My office blocks Ustream, CNN, etc, so now I can watch…
hehe “the man”..hehe stickin’ it to ya
I just downloaded the app and it is fan-freaking-tastic! I’M WATCHING A LIVE SHOW ON MY IPHONE!!!!!
This is amazing. Well done, well done.
I’m betting the first three comments were left by ustream employees. little too happy if you ask me.
How about a live broadcasting app for G1 and iPhone ???
There are plenty of viewing apps for both platforms already.
I disagree. There are no other viewers for live webcasting on locked phones. Would love an RTSP client, too, but this is a great start.
Oh, and watch Driving Sports TV Live Wednesday nights at 10pm pst on Ustream.tv

(Been waiting for a proper streaming client since the iPhone shipped. About damn time!)
I would like to invest in this company.

Thank you.
dumb money…
Why isn’t this app available for the Ipod Touch?
I thought I read it was?
Just tried adding it via the App Store – gives me an error saying it’s only available for the iphone – LAME
just downloaded the app on my touch, works like a dream, but i feel they are sacrificing valuable screen real estate for comments, maybe it can me a collapsible frame or something.
Wow I can now watch all man utd matches on my touch !!
All over this …. going to DL it now!
Only WiFi? FUCK FUCK FUCK!
There go my chances of seeing the inauguration live. ;_;
Picked a really bad day to travel.
Nope, no worries! if you’re jailbroken, the fix is only about 10 minutes. Otherwise, maybe an hour to do the whole thing. Happy watching!

iTunes “Apps” store states:
REQUIREMENTS:
Compatible with iPhone and iPod touch (2nd generation) Requires iPhone 2.0 Software Update
I’m bummed — since I only have 1st gen. Touch.
it is only compatible with 2nd Gen. ipod touch, not 1st Gen. ipod touch. That’s really annoying. Ustream can you please make this app compatible with 1st Gen. ipod touch.
App not working very well for me. Keep buffering then streams for a few seconds then says Error – Connection Closed. Have tried with a couple dozen different shows and same result every time. Bummer.
Freaking working perfect for me.
Your wifi must suck…
Nope, my wifi works great. On it all day without a hitch with both my laptop and iPhone.
Your wifi has got to be horrible!
I’m getting one bar right now and the video and audio are coming in crystal clear. Watching early inauguration coverage.
I cant get it on the app store with my ipod touch 2nd gen.
Streaming great for me.
awesome. but one thing. not all streams have chat functions. I cant chat on chris pirillo live! it sucks!
Awesome. I’m streaming my cats sleeping 5 feet from me using my Mac and watching from my iPhone. This is what the Internet was made for. I could turn and look at them but this is SO much cooler.

This. Is. Sweet.
I feel like a stalker though. Or a spy…
I just need to get my cats to wear emo glasses and I’ll be set for life…

While checking out this crunchy technews why not give the funniest webcomic on “the internets!”

A big upset is that it doesn’t work on an iPod Touch. The iPod Touch is WiFi compatible, so why wouldn’t it work? The App Store claims that it works with the iPhone and iPod Touch (2nd generation).
Agreed. Why won’t this puppy work on the touch?
Works great on my Ipod touch!!
Works like a treat here in Japan

Or, just use Kinoma Play on a Windows Mobile phone to watch the inauguration. Works on 3G, too.
Hey everyone, I’ve got a fix posted for the 3g only thing if you’ve got a jailbroken phone. Everyone should be watching this, even if you have to travel. Here’s the fix: http://www.alex...emore.com/?p=65
You’ll need an SSH client and a wireless network. Provided you have those things, it’ll take you about 10 minutes if you’re already jailbroken (and if you’re not totally one with these techniques, and/or the force) and maybe an hour or so if you’ve got to jail break first (if you’re moving fast)
Either way, get going NOW and you’ll be able to see that inauguration live even on 3g (and with only a dropped frame here and there!)
selam
it is just me or is that mustache a little spooky?
This is going to be so awesome! I can now broadcast myself doing crazy stuff on the street LIVE!!!
1st gen ipod support is coming soon…
I don’t understand why this is not available to iPod Touch users…
Thanks for the update! I was getting nervous that the app wouldn’t come out in time for the inauguration. My brother and I created a website called lyvegyde (http://www.lyvegyde.com) with links to live, online events and webcasts – including a special section with inauguration webcasts – so we are REALLY excited!!
Glad the folks at Ustream were able to get this app out. Though it seems to be pretty slow, hope an update is released soon to improve performance. It has already caused a reboot of my iPhone.
fantastic, now we can see live video on iPhone~~
The first few comments (and some mixed in) do look fake and the “investor” is definitely a fake.
Any serious investor would know the proper channels to invest in a website.
For one, the ‘contact us’ page.
Even though I do not like the design skills of Ustream at all (I mean… look at the font of the chatbox *argh)… I can’t help to think that Ustream is gaining much weight in the streaming business … especially when Youtube keeps neglecting this field…
I find their services very useful and this app proves to me once again that they’re on the right track!
