I would argue that spreading information verbatim is not low value but actually the high value proposition of a simple distributed communication tool like twittter, that is so effective in broadcasting 'breaking' local news.

Not sure if you are arguing that it is low-value or if you are saying that if people are not good at seeing where value is.

While I've been involved with technology for twenty plus years I certainly don't know everything and if someone asks a question I certainly don't mind at least making an effort to help. Does this action improve my brand or my companies brand I'd certainly like to think it does.
The same also holds true with RT (re tweeting) if you make an offering of something of value or your involved in some sort of fund raising for a good cause then by all means I'd love to support your efforts by RT. This action typically involves clicking the url and actually reading it and commenting on it as you now now the content and in turn its relevance to someone else (in theory).

This article took someone some time to put together.... but the reality is this. (it's data).

For every method someone can devise to track your personal or companies relevance (if that is what you need to do) there will be someone who can devise a method to manipulate the data to say what they want it to say.

All of the graphs and charts and opinions regarding the quantum physics or proper procedures for using Twitter are nothing more than someones attempts at manipulating data to support their position.

One day Twitter in their opinion is a waste of time and days later they have a url with Twitter in it claiming to be an authority on that to.

Opinions here or on Twitter itself are nothing more than what they are (opinion). The relevance of them to other users on Twitter can only be appreciated by the person who sees them, agrees with them or appreciates them. This is the demographics of how Twitter and what Twitter is to each and every person using it.

The same also hold true of individuals who take the time to read and comment on blogs. These to are also opinions and are subject to interpretation by additional users who read them and occassionaly by the auther who may or may not choose to even be involved in his or her own blog.

I have refrained from including my business url as it serves no relevance to this topic. My name however should you be interested is Robert "Butch" Greenawalt
my Twitter Id is MRHYPERPCS

I appreciate you taking the time to read my opinion.

TechCrunch

Thanks for mentioning me on the article. :)

I didn't even know about it until people on Twitter retweeted when I did a search for my name.

Twitter is very powerful for getting great content out there. If it's useful to people, they will retweet it.

What none of these raw measures of a string that includes RT can capture is other ways of phrasing the act of sharing.

I do think there's value in the act of sharing with endorsement, which is what it means to me to retweet. I may say "Thx to @UserName for pointing me to URL", which is at once an expression of courtesy and a sharing of the URL. I might add a comment about the content, which isn't the same as a straight RT.

As a measure of passalong value of tweet content, counting pure RTs does count something. But I have to agree with @karllong--this feels more like a measurement of impressions than a measure of conversation value.

In the end these gross measures of volume just serve to distract people from the real value that is getting created on twitter. The real value is in smaller networks focusing on specific niches, businesses are getting built, partnerships are getting formed, and entrepreneurs are collaborating. Focusing on # of followers and # of retweets is a 'mass market' mindset, which is antithetical to what makes social media work.

I am sorry but I don't agree. The aggressive retweeting on Twitter has significantly affected the quality and the purpose of the service. Half of tweets that appear now are retweets.

You follow three people and they are constantly retweeting the links that the other two are posting. And often they retweet the same links more than once. What is the purpose of that?

People have taken retweeting to a limit. Too often you see domino retweets. One person tweets, then the other person retweets, then another person retweets that retweet. It's absolutely irritating.

Soon enough people will stop communicating on Twitter and then it will become a retweet competition. Where they retweet then they boast about how often they retweet and their retweet rankings. It has already started. And these twitter users are as bad as the marketing spammers.

Aah, twitter. Do you even remember life without it ? Oh wait! I actually do. It's not that I hate it or something. I actually find it very beneficial.

My thanks to the Twitter team for providing such an amazing tool. Even so, I've essentially abandoned using their more restrictive interface in favor of Twitter clients that are much more flexible...including being easily able to retweet.

If you have an iPhone, check-out the Tweetie app. On your PC or Mac, have a look at TweetDeck.

I guess my big thing is why isn't this built into twitter already? If I can favorite tweets, and use any tweet from someone as a point to reply to them - why can't I also forward a tweet on to my followers?
