A U.S. Airways plane leaving New York City crashed in the Hudson River a few hours ago, possibly due to a bird striking the engine. Rescue operations are under way. Apparently all passengers are safely off the plane now. But I’ll tell you one thing: it’s freezing in New York City today. I can only imagine what it must have been like on the water.
Pictures of the plane floating in the river are already on Flickr, Tumblr, and TwitPic (which seems to be overloaded right now). In fact, the picture above was taken by Janis Krums who Twittered it from his iPhone, and posted via TwitPic.
Here’s more Twitter conversation about the crash, a crowd-sourced story on NowPublic, as well as a general resource page for finding more details. The picture below is by grego!

Here was another one posted by one of our users.

Perhaps the most pathetic attempt to connect Twitter to relevance yet.
Incredible–Hall of Shame–Shilling on your part, Eric.
I now see why you failed so miserably in mainstream journalism.
Thanks, however, for the prompt reminder though…
they are very lucky that no one was seriously hurt. congrats to pilots
Excellent pictures and use of twitter. I’m sure Janis Krums will now get his 15 minutes of fame from all of the news coverage… and maybe even spin it off into a site or something.
End result, a miracle and blessing no one was hurt in this incident. Pilot did an amazing job.
i agree
I saw someone re-post Krums’ compelling message when monitoring Twitter for updates via Tweet Grid. “http://twitpic.com/135xa – There’s a plane in the Hudson. I’m on the ferry going to pick up the people. Crazy.” (I then re-posted it myself.)
It should be noted that twitpic went down quickly (and still is), and I had to wait until Silicon Alley Insider re-hosted the image in order to see it. S.I.A. reported that Krums was interviewed by MSNBC shortly after making his post. A win for Twitter and social media.
Twitpic’s now working, but a little slow.
It’s amazing how quickly everybody knew using twitter. Pictures were being distributed all over the place. If only people on the airplane used twitter more… it’d be a quick viral spread.
Glad everybody is OK.
Fantastic landing, very good quick thinking. I’d fly US Airways for sure now. Accidents happen, what you do to ensure the safety of your customers during emergency situations is what counts.
@Andrew: Yep, I’m sure every single pilot that flies with US Airways can make that landing too. All the other airlines have crap pilots!
@g: hahahaha good one!

1st Tweets Timeline/Chart ~ USAirways commuter plane crash in Hudson River… http://tweetip.us/lkuiu
I also noticed tweets saying that a plane had crashed in the Bronx, and another that it was in East River. This is after TV news had cameras on the scene. And this is why I’ll leave it to others to rely on twitter as a news source.
btw i loved krums’ performance in sahara.

Sorry, did I miss something? Yes, a computer crashed. Oh no, wait. It was actually a plane that crashed. Into Hudson. Well, let’s run the story nonetheless.
What does TC stand for again? Today’s Crimes? Train Crashes? Talking Crap? The c*cks*cker?
Its amazing how twitter, mobile devices and the internet work…
What skill by the pilots… Do you know how hard it is to turn a giant commercial airliner with no engines working – I don’t but could only guess its REALLY HARD. These pilots are heroes; imagine if the plane had gone down on Broadway – Yikes!
Onlookers that viewed the incident happy in action must of been terrified. Flashbacks of 9/11.
Ryan Mettee, if you don’t know anything about airplane physics and aviation, just STFU and stop talking BS.
1. Your guess is plain wrong: No, it isn’t hard to turn an airplane with no engines working as long as the APU provides enough pressure. The hard thing is getting the max range out of the airspeed once the engines don’t provide any (or insufficient) thrust anymore whilst keeping the plane under control very close to stall speed. And the touchdown is difficult too.
2. In such a situation, no sane pilot would even remotely consider flying an airplane towards Manhattan skyscrapers. He would rather just dump it into Hudson, killing all people onboard. So forget about your Broadway sensation.
3. Spectators weren’t terrified at all. This incident is not comparable to 9/11 in any way.
I’m glad everyone is OK. The speed of news online is getting scary. Go Twitter!!!
this is so awesome how the plane crashed
check out the map – http://www.umap.../view/id/20601/
The map from the crash that is…
They bailed out Bank Of America employees again. Literally.
I wish I could filter out all the screencaps from the actual photos – they overwhelm the Flickr feed and make it rather pointless.
I’m glad to see everyone is ok. Props out to the pilot for doing such a good job it could have been real bad.

News is power, Twitter brought the power to the people.
Funny how someone twittering a disaster is newsworthy? Why didn’t this douche jump into the water and try to like, save someone? Did he call 911? Oh wait, he was too busy tweeting.
You’re all a bunch of web2.0 ghoul douches obsessed with yourself. I hope twitter crashes and burns so you don’t need to micoblog about the line at Starbucks.
Hey, here’s one – “Got fired for using twitter at work”
As a manager, I’ve already reprimanded my reports for being on twitter, because honestly,. I want my guys doing work and not micoblogging about their soggy chicken salad.
Get bent you self obesssed cooonts.
this is remarkable
