Carol who? oh you mean carol bartz, the woman who said "she will kick some butt" to raise yahoo from the ashes but obviously failed?

or the other carol bartz who bitterly said, "Yahoo was never a search engine" when she knew in her heart that Google see right through the company.

Or the far-version of Carol bartz, the one Mr. Icahn called a "loser"?

I guess those 3 carol bartz looks the same to me

[...] TechCrunch: Bartz is a capable manager. She led Autodesk for 14 years between 1992 and 2006, keeping it from the PC software graveyard by focusing on CAD software for architects and builders. Autodesk, however, is an old-school software company. It is not exactly a great training ground for running an online advertising business attached to the most popular destinations on the Web. And as far as applications go, they are all Web apps and Yahoo gives them away for free. Bartz is most definitely an ally of founder and outgoing CEO Jerry Yang. They both sit on Cisco’s board. But it gets better. She also sits on Intel’s board with [outgoing] Yahoo president Susan Decker. In other words, she is has close ties with existing management. (Decker, though, wanted the CEO job as well). [...]

I think Yahoo can pull it out. They make more money than FAcebook and now they are developing greater social networking centered around e-mail. While I don't plan on using the social network because I like to keep my e-mail and social network separate for privacy reasons, it is a good start for Yahoo.

I also had the idea that Yahoo should create a separate Family Safe portal with Family Safe Search. There is a great segment of families and underaged kids who would be forced to use this new portal by their parents and schools.

Do CEO's do anything anyway? You can put a monkey (in the animal sense) as a CEO, and it'll be the same.

This is strictly a PR move, albeit a poor one.

AutoDesk went from 97% market share to about 60% under her leadership. They lost all the creative talent that was responsible for the original product. I really don't see how she gets all the credit for the success of the company, since a Chimpanzee at the helm could have overseen the same amount of growth.

Admitting you have no employees, are underfunded and are basically shit, really isnt the kind of things you put on your homepage.

I disagree with Erick's comments. If Yahoo! had wanted to dress itself up for a sale to Microsoft, it could've done so with any middling management performer. Sue Decker could've handled the sale and spare Jerry Yang (some of) the embarrassment by accepting a price lower than what he'd previously declined. However, since Ms. Decker was part of the management trio that helped lead Yahoo! into this mess, she wouldn't be picked if Yahoo! wanted a turnaround.

Ms. Bartz' background may be old school software in Autodesk, but you're missing the bigger picture. She's a strategic pick for long-term objectives, like a turnaround. If the opportunity presents itself, obviously she'd consider all sale possibilities but that wouldn't be her primary focus.

I think she'll ultimately sell off prize assets when the market recovers and use that cash to revamp the brand and make small, targeted acquisitions. As well, given her experience in paid software, she may focus on Yahoo!'s non-advertising businesses - its stars. These include: growing Zimbra's paid support and outsourced hosting business, growing Yahoo! Web Hosting and possibly finally getting Yahoo! ICANN-accredited to sell its own domain names, and even growing non-ad revenue generating aspects of Flickr. When the ad market tanked in 2001-2002, Terry Semel was seen as Yahoo!'s saviour by growing those businesses like paid Yahoo! Mail subscriptions and bringing Yahoo!'s reliance on ad revenue down to around 60% compared to Google's 95%. If Bartz does the same, it'll be Yahoo!'s saving grace - again.

It's a good pick and hopefully this will bring some stability to Yahoo!.

My two cents (or thereabouts),
Doug Mehus

Take a real close look at Biondi. He wants a sale. She will do his bidding. I've worked for him. He's a snake. Always gets fired when higher-up realizes he's just a cold gasbag. Until Icahn came along, he had nothing to do. Carl is his bread and butter; he will do whatever it takes to sell this sucker. NOTHING ELSE matters. He doesn't give a rat's about Yahoo! And if he doesn't like what Carol's doing, he'll just go around her. Can you tell I like him?
