Twitter, runner-up for best overall startup and winner of the best startup founder(s) at the Crunchies 2008 awards ceremony last night, was without a doubt one of the most talked about web companies last year, and we don’t see that changing much in 2009.
Whether it’s about their downtime, their valuation, their actual usage numbers, the interest they get from investors, their management shakeups or their security woes, Twitter’s got tongues rolling and we’re happily known to partake in reporting on the good, the bad and the ugly about the startup on occasion (ok, a lot).
The most interesting thing about Twitter, of course, is the number and quality of both web-based and desktop applications that make use of Twitter’s API and growing user base to create a better user experience or make it even more useful by adding features. So it’s a shame to see Twitter itself feature only 12 out of hundreds of tools.
So here are five good ways to keep abreast of the newest and best Twitter applications:
The Twitter Fan Wiki is where you’ll find most Twitter applications, and lets registered users add or edit entries. The wiki site has the most extensive list for sure, but only provides a one-line description without any visuals so it’s not the most fun to browse. Also, no RSS feed!
Twitdom is a new contender that bills itself as the Twitter Application Database. It’s still in beta but offers a smooth way of discovering new Twitter applications, sliced up in 5 categories and with a visual preview of what to expect. (RSS feed)
Twapps is similar to Twitdom but doesn’t have categories so it’s a little harder to find what you’re looking for. It currently lists only 57 applications but has admittedly only launched recently. (RSS feed)
TwitTown offers news about all things Twitter but also publishes Twitter Forge, a collection of Twitter apps nicely fit into 24 categories. Could use an update though. (RSS feed)
The Squidoo lense on TwitterApps lists about 275 tools with a short description but you can’t filter so it takes some time to find the one you’re looking for. (RSS feed)
Know any other good resources? Let us know in the comments!

I partially agree with you robin but with these apps twitter is becoming more noisy and some profiles are losing their real sense.
I agree. I’d hate to see the day that twitter becomes the myspace of micro-blogging services.
Thanks for covering Twitdom. Highly appreciated!
And thank you Twitdom for supporting Twitter Apps everywhere, your site is very easy to navigate.
Thanks
The Twitblogs Team
My greatest source of finding Twitter apps has always been my Twitter stream itself. People send out very interesting finds all the time and I just click through and check out all kinds of neat and not so neat apps on a regular basis.
Depends on who you follow I guess, but it’s easy to to find and follow the right ones. Start with Arrington and Scobleizer and work your way through the people they @talk to!
i agree, I get all my sources for Twitter apps through my twitter stream as well. I follow varied people and test the apps that they recommend. It’s a great source of feedback mechanism as well. we can give our comments and Twitter listens.
Thanks . http://kisalt.us/590/
I couldn’t agree more. Not only is my Twitter stream on both my personal and business account an excellent source for new Twitter apps, I find other followers appreciate it when current users weigh-in with their thoughts prior to a download or install.
hey .. http://twurl.nl/b7usmz from @techcrunch doesn’t work …
Yes it does?
doe now … weird …
We have a twitter-based application known as Oh My Science.

The overall prize at Crunchies should have gone to Twitter.
Btw still, the Twitter Fan Wiki page is an awesome resource to find the best twitter tools.

Techcrunch is a good source of twitter apps … don’t you guys have one showcased every day?
lol…that’s what I was going to say. You should probably add TechCrunch to the list because I come here everyday looking for a new Twitter app
please check out http://pleasetw...ntoauthnow.com/ – especially if you want applications access your twitter account. Also, please follow http://twitter.com/oauth_now to show your support for OAuth!
How about openid or facebook connect? these are the standards today … still can’t understand why oauth …
Apparently, you have no idea wtf you are talking about as OAuth serves a different purpose than FBC or OpenID. OAuth is to allow 3rd party apps to access your account without your login credentials. OpenID/FBC gives one universal credentials (in theory).
GO back to sleep Eric.
What a waste of $10. I suppose you could have come up with a better domain name. I’m guessing that’s one of those domains that will die off after a year. I agree, OpenID would be a much better solution.
Twitter was announced as one of the companies that have signed to use Facebook Connect. I can’t wait!

We just launched with our own tool called the TweetRoll, think MyBlogLog for twitter. Would love for you to cover it.
You have to think really hard to see it like mybloglog
HMM…
Thanks a lot for the post. Good way to list my app in these directories.
I think Techcrunch should open up a directory of it’s own. I know it has covered a lot of apps, but putting up a list will help big time for both app creators like me and people interested in finding new apps.
There are so many changes within the twittersphere that its nice to have someone go through the apps that we can use with the service. We are still formulating how we are going to use the service for customers but looking forward to all the possibilities.
I also wanted to take a moment to thank the Twitter team on GetSatisfaction for resolving a lot of the username issues that have recently arisen.
We are excited to see a great 2009 with Twitter.
twapps is one of my favorites.
We run the current largest Twitter catalog and trying to spread the word..
http://EverythingTwitter.com
Over 200 apps sorted by categories on the right. Fully searchable and we try to test them as we go also
I put together a comprehensive iPhone Twitter App comparison chart. You can see it here:

Thanks for the article. It actually helped me promote my own twitter app
Poor me, I never Tweet
this GM script for Firefox allows you to see all followers/following bios at a glance. Saves a lot of time in helping you decided who to follow!

I’d also recommend simply searching for Twitter on userscripts.org from time to time for other great ideas and apps

Most people seem to have found our apps for better twitter sharing though the people they follow on twitter or bloggers
Most people seem to have found our apps for better twitter video sharing though the people they follow on twitter or bloggers
After trying a lot of apps, the only ones I use are:
- Twitter on my BlackBerry
- Twitter plugin for LiveWriter
- Twitter home page
Really it’s to great.Twitter will become more efficient with these apps.Nice post.

You can get good stuff about twitter (applications, news, …) at : http://smashing....com/tweet.php/
here is small list of twitter applications for Mac OS X http://www.macr...s-for-mac-os-x/
It is a bit of a mess with all these applications for twitter so any aggregator or something that could make it easier would be happily welcomed!
Nice Collection there. However I feel the best place to find out new apps is my twitter stream. People keep find different apps by themselves and I look into any app that I find in my twitter stream
Programmable bots for Twitter: http://t411.linkstore.ru
I like twitthis, however i dont think it is working. does anyone have an alternate to this app
Interesting. I think the main thing I like about Twitter is its simplicity.. ya know? In and out without having to accept or reject comments; if I get inundated with stuff I don’t like I can just delete them; I can go to twitwall.com and add video’s if I want; there are no stupid groups to add that ask you to send them vampire hugs or whatever. WOW I am in love with Twitter!

Another way is to look at the real time Twitter Client list of Twitstat, at http://twitstat...lientusers.html This list is updated in real time, and shows usage today compared to yesterday, so you can see what’s “up and coming”. Its sample is about 4000 users. SocialScope seems to be on the increase.
I love twitter. I use the web based version and the firefox extension. Twitter is great.

My picks..
- Twitter Fan Wiki
- my twitter stream
Rest all seem like noise.
Thanks so much for this article. This gives me some more apps to check out. I also use my twitter stream as a source as well.
I had listed BigTweet in the Twitter Fan Wiki, but was not aware of the other resources – thanks!
I’m finding that Twitter itself is one of the best means to find apps. When people discover how useful BigTweet is for posting while browsing, they will often let their followers know.
Recommendations from friends also helps to build trust.
http://bigtweet.com/
JustTweetIt.com is a great source of all sorts of twitter apps and services
Great post! – A must have for all new to twitter.

Stellar article, Robin. I have already added Twitcrush.com to some of the places you listed, will now add it to the others (plus some of the places left in comments).
thanks
We have just launched today Tweetube, the easiest way to share your favorite videos on Twitter.
Check it out http://tweetube.com
We have launched twi5.com yesterday.
twi5 aims to become the best twitter repository available to users. We’ve started documenting apps and will soon grow into a one stop place for all your twitter app needs.
Please do check out the site. It’s still in Beta, I hope techcrunch features it soon.
Another directory of Twitter apps:

I’ve got yet another directory of Twitter stuff – check out http://www.TwitterPassion.com – there are over 400 twitter related links in the database! Check it out.
There are so many new twitter apps coming out every month that I’m having a hard time keeping up with all of them.
Here is a good list of Twitter Apps I found at PR 2.0
First Twitter social bookmarking site
