Self described reformed crack dealer/New York Times columnist David Carr continues the fine tradition of bad video creation by New York Times writers in a post in today’s Carpetbagger (The paper’s Oscars blog).
What is he saying? Why is he saying it? I don’t know. No one knows.
No more complaints about TechCrunch, people. This is what you get when old media tries new things.

Sorry, I don’t get this post.
you are not alone, and i don’t even think techcrunch understand what this is all about either. i mean counting money can be a tiring job =)
Create or join a TechCrunch chat group at http://groups.im/
This does not compute. Danger. Danger.
Arrington asks for an embargo on readers pointing out bad news stories.
Readers accept.
Then proceed to summarily break the embargo.
Dear TechCrunch, BAD NEWS STORY!!!!
What’s the New York Times?
What’s the Economy?
What’s an Institewshun?
What will this blog be in a few years time?
Seriously… that video was, well, a nothing. But the race to replace “brick and mortar” journalism with blogs that can be shut down simply by swapping out a DNS entry is troubling to me.
(non US/journalist/old person)
Number one reason why democracy has failed us. The inability to put stupid people like this in jail for stupid things they do.
I may not like the video but I have no clue what @James is on about.
Inability to put stupid people in jail breaking democracy? Are you saying that drug laws are too lax? If so… “I pity the fool.”
When the revolution hits, Nick will be the first in jail.
What in the world?!?
Note: The NYTimes took out a mortgage on their building to pay to have this video made….
this is the most embarrasing video I have ever seen. FAILED
terrible video, terrible post
It’s like a trailer for the next Saw movie
er, it seems pretty clear what he’s saying: he’s predicting batman will be nominated for best picture.
in all honestly, i’ve seen just as embarrassing and worse on many techblogs, this one included. computer nerds shouldn’t throw stones at other nerds’ glass houses.
Totally agree Frank… TC might want to get off their high horse a bit.. It is a bit crap, but don’t think its worthy of a post flaming it.
show me. show me something as bad as this.
http://www.tech...windows-killer/
please
Michael,
My Nokia Daily News is often as bad or worse than this guy. Check out yesterday’s show, where I get the date wrong not once, but twice!

PS thanks for the hits!
Michael,
Rather than ask us what TechCrunch has produced that’s *worse* than this, ask yourself what you’ve produced that matches or betters what the NYT has produced.
What’s the NYT? I don’t read print/dinosaur media anymore. The video sucks. Sad thing is, it’s probably his real work place
As much as I think this video is horrible, I have to agree with Frank. It’s a blog… it should be able to provide a unique voice to the blogger outside the main media stream. Even if it is absolutely horrible. Is he trying to be the Joker or that guy from SAW?
“reformed crack dealer” – seems like he just switched sides from dealer to user.
HAHA, very nice call !!
Most columnist of the NYTimes think they should either: 1) Be the FedReserve chairman, 2) Be the President of the US; or 3) Be the Ruler of the world.
You can tell which they want to be based on which day they are published.
At least this guy is humble enough to just want to run Hollywood.
Actually Mike, this might open up a whole new market for them on the internet. Could be big.
Ouch.
Maybe he had an off day, but I remember when the NYT was the paper of record.
The real lesson is, when prestigious institutions grow, they are forced by shortage to admit lesser lights, and eventually, people with grievances and friends of staff, and soon everything turns into something like what you see here: an embarrassing, sad proof of a treasure lost forever.
More simply: a vivid display of why large corporations tend to become mediocre and brilliance is episodic.
well said
I did understand the babbling guy with the white painted face. Somewhat. But as soon as the Joker came at 1:35, he totally lost me.
Too bad, in every sense of the word.
I thought The Onions was Our Nation’s Finest News Source
http://theonion.com
Initially I was just creeped out. Then when the mask came off and I realized he really talks like that, real fear set in. Just keep it simple NYT!!!
I can’t wait until rupert murdoch buys NYT and cleans house.
Missed the mark but showed the cards. Obviously trying to be relevant while saving a penny. Remember, print is expensive and dying.
The difference between TechCrunch and Carr’s videocasts? With this post by TC, I no longer will be reading TC.
OK – cya!
It never ceases to amaze me that people write this stuff.
What are you laughing about!! {seesmic_video:{”url_thumbnail”:{”value”:”http://t.seesmic.com/thumbnail/4UzQoPhUDq_th1.jpg”}”title”:{”value”:”What are you laughing about!! ”}”videoUri”:{”value”:”http://www.seesmic.com/video/qJs36K5E3Z”}}}
Think I found something that can compete with this….. http://en.seven...r-Pie-Episode-6
Mike,
I’ll agree that this video is awful, but your personal hatred of the NYT is not worthy of posts on TC. First, online video is supposed to be all about trying new things and not being afraid to fail. You ignore that Carr has been doing video longer than most mainstreamers as well as most WEB2.0 video “stars”. He’s done a lot of good stuff. He’s also a veteran of Inside.com which flamed out in true dot-com bubble fashion, which should win him some respect, right?
I agree, Mike. And at least Mr Carr doesn’t show the same level of vitriol for this site. MA was referenced respectfully in today’s Times column about paying for news content.
Wow. I’m always on about how institutions and companies need to get out of the way and let their employees put a human face on their interactions with others on the web.
If this is the result, I have to rethink a lot of that core philosophy.
Yeah, like Frank says:
“i’ve seen just as embarrassing and worse on many techblogs, this one included. computer nerds shouldn’t throw stones at other nerds’ glass houses.”
Tech vloggers paved the way for this including many other videos posted on this very blog. You should blame yourself first.
This actually isn’t that bad but they made the mistake of identifying the columnist. That brings on way too much baggage and far too many expectations that break with David Carr’s brand, at least what I’ve previously encountered of that brand.
So basically they’ve blown the introduction of something that could actually work.
Especially if they add subtitles.
