This post was written by guest contributor Mark Brooks, an analyst/consultant whose blog Online Personals Watch summarizes the daily internet dating industry news.
Earlier this week InterActive Corporation (IAC), which owns and operates popular paid dating sites Match.com and Chemistry.com, launched a completely free dating site called DownToEarth.com (you can check out an ad for the recently launched site here). The somewhat counterintuitive move is IAC/Match.com’s answer to Plentyoffish.com, a popular free dating site that was long run by one man out of his apartment (he now has an office and a small team).
DowntoEarth.com was started by Jacob Solotaroff who spent a year as the Director of Product Management and Member Integrity at Match. Now he runs the site out of Dallas, where Match is also based. Apparently IAC believes if someone is going to put Match out of business, it might as well be Match.
The most interesting feature on the new site is the RealRatings user ratings system for ranking the accuracy of people’s profiles against real life. Users who post inaccurate photographs and profiles of themselves are ratted out by other users who have been on a date with them. Users can grade the accuracy of profiles on a scale of 1 star to 5 stars once they’ve been on a face to face date. 1 star means “not even close” and 5 stars mean “true to life.” Could this be the end of white lies on dating profiles?
Here’s a look at how some of the free competition DowntoEarth will be facing off with in the USA, UK, Australia and Canada.
The top free dating sites in the USA are currently:
#1 Plentyoffish (#2 overall in the internet dating category in Dec ‘09, #2 in May ‘09)

Outside of ad revenue how else do these sites make money? Is ad revenue still viable?
#1 There is no way to compare whether or not ad rev is still viable between POF and downtoearth, for one POF is run out of an apartment by one guy while downtoearth likely has staff as well as an office building.
#2 That said, I think ad rev is still a viable means going forward for a site as there will always be marketers looking to get their word out. Sure, the economy is not what it was 2 years ago right now, but that doesn’t mean that advertisers aren’t spending. Bring them the quality eyeballs and they spend with you both now and in 5 years from now when the economy recovers.
#3 Money will also continue to shift out of TV and newspaper to the digital space, and that should not be glossed over. There is a lot of money in TV.
I always wondered why restaurants and flower shops do not push their services on these dating sites. I feel like it’s a good idea to give a first date a discount on dinner. I believe some cities have promotions like this, where you play a flat fee and can go to 20 restaurants of your choice.
also try http://www.Yocial.com , it is 100% free too.

Plenty of fish makes plenty of money without much investments other than server expenses, what about the paid services? Are they really making up their huge promotional costs?
For a site as large as plenty of fish, any idea what server expense would run?
POF is run by a guy who lives in Vancouver BC, he has a small staff of 3 to 5 people, and makes the majority of his money from Affiliate sales and clicks.
Markus Frind is his name. He likes to talk about all the money he makes and is well known for publicly showcasing his Google AdSense checks for $1 Million…
This is the most basic concept, allow people to connect with oneanother to build relationships and then eventually have sex with oneanother.
Sex, is of course, the main driving factor behind most people and is the essence of life.
Markus Frind (CEO) of Plenty of Fish occasionally discusses these day-to-day operations on his blog http://plentyoffish.wordpress.com/
Re Plenty of Fish: Here’s an article about the site’s infrastructure and a more recent video from his hosting company Peer 1.
Thanks guys for the links.
To get back to the topic, I believe in the world of dating sites, Free dating sites can truly become a small problem for paid sites. But then there is also the budgeting factor. These big name (paid) dating sites must have an enormous budgeting plan.
Being able to advertise on TV or Radio, That would be somewhat of a dream for me. I believe they will hold there ground by being able to regularly update there site.
I have put in allot of work to get my 100% free dating site off the ground http://www.HookingUpNY.com where I offer all features for free. I am willing to push all the way.
So as for being a problem for paid dating sites, I don’t think they will have a big problem competing with free sites.
I met the girl of my dreams on POF…
http://www.adrianeden.com/sex/.....g-website/
Does anyone else think that this article feel more like an advertorial for plentyoffish than an article about downtoearth?
No innovation whatsoever. Why not invent something new on the dating sites scene instead of building same old? This site may become somewhat profitable but has no future.
PoF has proved relatively useless to me in the NYC area. I really dislike their search feature and the pictures are way too small. Also, the profiles are typically very poorly filled out. By contrast, OkCupid in the NYC area has been wildly successful for me.
That said, I prefer Match because the investment of money in putting up a profile leads to better quality as well as women who are far more committed to making online dating work for them rather than just browsing. So while I will definitely have a presence on every free site out there, I’m still not giving up my match.com subscription any time soon.
Saw a similar post on Mashable earlier in the week. It’s interesting that people think the free dating sites might actually give the paid sites a real run for their money. Traffic-wise they might, but there are interesting things to note about the online dating industry:
1. Many of the existing paid sites started as free sites in the mid to late 90’s. Over the past 10yrs they’ve refined their business models and almost all ended up in the same place. Online dating is as mature an online industry as any.
2. Dating site reviews largely ignore the free sites because they make money off of affiliate programs with the paid sites.
3. At least a few of the free sites make their money off of those same affiliate programs.
4. Match, eHarmony and Friendfinder each make well over $100M/yr, and even niche site JDate makes around $40M/yr.
5. People who join online dating sites seldom limit themselves to just one.
6. Many people consider the fact that a site has paid membership a plus. Basically a way to keep the freaks at bay.
Not saying that there isn’t room for successful free online dating sites, just that the new kids on the block need to understand what they’re getting themselves into. The biggest competition to online dating really seems to be the large social networks and sites like Meetup, that help make connections in general.
Josh,
I completely agree with you. People tend to take paid site seriously. The only problem is, it is still difficult to know if a dating profile is genuine or fake.
Sarah
Largely you get what you pay for in dating sites.
January 2009 issue of Inc. magazine has a very interesting article on Plenty of fish and the creator Markus Frind. All the previous questions and more are answered in the article.
Btw, the author of this post will get $7,50 from DownToEarth:

Plenty enough for his time…
Plenty of Fish is a classic bootstrapped start-up–a great case study there (and from our hometown of Vancouver, I believe).
It’s natural that free dating sites would kill the paid ones. That’s what Craigslist is doing to newspaper classifieds, after all. What, I wonder, will this do to the whole men-pay-but-women-are-free approach that lots of these sites have?
great post, josh. free is all the rage until you end up broke.
The only surprise here is that it took paid dating sites so long to try the free/advertising based model. Plenty of Fish (POF) has had a virtual monopoly on this model for a while and has done it successfully. Hurrah for first-mover advantage.
Now it looks like an number of sites are entering the marketplace. Expect a least one more major launch in the next couple of weeks. Rumor has it that Yahoo! Personals considered this strategy a few years ago, but abandoned it. Will they consider it again?
Of course lots of free sites can only be good for the consumer who will get more features and benefits than ever before.
So will these free sites all make money? Not hardly. In order to make money, sites have to have traffic and their consumers have to click on ads. With too many free sites there just isn’t enough gravy to go around.
The best will survive. The others will perish. The question is now that it’s a race about features and benefits, who is going to lead the pack.
Craigslist Erotic Services listing are less hassle, less depressing than any dating website, and are also a free service and the CLES dates are alot less expensive than the divorce that will come from a “successful” online dating service date…
POF has succeeded not only because the service is free, but because Markus Frind has a wider version for the website. It functions more like a social networking community than any other dating site I’ve seen. While offline events have failed for companies like Match.com, POF makes them successful because the site’s members rally together.
Plus, Markus has introduced a series of pioneering assessments/applications that combine compatibility/chemistry assessment with automated dating coach guidance. Usually, daters would be required to pay a hefty monthly fee to gain access to just one tool like this — and he gives his customers unlimited access to four original tools.
Markus is ahead of the curve in many respects and mainstream sites have taken notice.
Thanks,

No mention of craigslist - is the personals section of craigslist considered a (free) dating site?
Well I seem to believe it is like anything in life to a degree that unless you pay for something, value is not as strong as it would be if one paid money, and that comment is not to take away anything from the sites being free at all, it’s just been that way for years as some part of our culture, so there will always be those who like free, those who want to pay, and those who like everything.
The social medias have really picked up tremendously in the last few months I must say, those used for business purposes too as that is primarily my interest in building networks, and even those are getting crowded! When I say crowded, I mean we are at the level of filtering content today, dating, social and business sites alike.
Just as we develop more of the social network connections, it also leads to a very disconnected crowd of sorts too, those who are addicted to some degree. As each site evolves and creates better structured query results, a mass move from one to another can occur, or you might find the same folks on almost all the sites, which I did some checking around at one point and that is a lot of what I found, so I don’t feel the paid and/or free sites will be suffering from too much competition, but rather a redundancy of members.
Here’s a link too one write up I did about the addiction in China that was posted this week on USA Today, one woman was addicted to 68 virtual husbands! I know sounds funny, but when addicted and communicating with so many, you may not be able to escape the house and keyboard for long:)

Also, on the StartUp Zone from Microsoft, the initial interview for the site, which is to help and encourage start up companies, even with advice on how to get connected with Venture Capitalists, was with the founder of Plenty of Fish. He was lucky too in the fact that he didn’t need financial help and created the right product at the right time to address a demand for singles dating. Using MS SQL server and the right type of hardware, the website is able to handle a lot of traffic without a huge amount of upkeep as I’m sure he’s running all the additional maintenance services to keep it that way too.
http://www.microsoftstartupzon.....f&ID=8
It is a very busy site though and for me, perhaps a bit too busy as I don’t care for instant messaging and could hardly finish a profile without the “drag line” of men jumping on to talk as the SQL queries work to quickly identify new members and when they are signed on be default for messaging. Of course you can turn that off, which I almost did immediately as you get some really mad or impatient folks if you don’t respond and just like any other messaging service it was a pain, so you either end up blocking individuals or opting out.
As long as there are “serial daters” in the world I think all sites will continue to do well, but those that are free might have a more varied mix than ones perhaps that are paid for.
Just like any other business on the web, the year 2009 is definitely going to be the year of “filters” as the web brings us many choices and at times too many, so without filters sometimes folks just end up walking away empty handed with too many choices to make, just like we do when walking in to a store with too many choices too.
I spend so much time on the web for work as well for my work, I almost value not having to be on the web for social reasons, but do make on big exception and that is talking with Robert Scoble and the gang on Friend Feed and Twitter, as both have a lot of smart people and you get smarter hanging out with them and sending my blog feeds through the network is just one more added plus.
For the year 2009, everyone will need better filters by far!
The whole business angle with revenue and all is cool
but dating sites are the epitome of lame on the web
Slot machines are considered the most ‘boring’ of casino games. But if you look, they take up 60% + of the casino space. It is because it is the largest revenue player.
So you may have your opinions about online dating, but in the social networking space, the 900 lb Gorilla of revenue is the Online Dating Space. It took years for Facebook and MySpace to realize this. They ‘wanted nothing to do’ with online dating. Now they openly embrace it.

I have to agree with some of earlier comments here. What took the paid dating companies so long to join the game? Markus is obviously doing something right to get the paycheck he does, and people keep coming back to POF.
the sensationalist title and biased perspective of this post is laughable.
@mark brooks, love you man, but seriously, this is a fluff piece that is more about plugging your client P of F than it is about covering DownToEarth (should of left the analysis piece alone and left out all the rankings). also, fact check, downtoearth has been around for some time and IAC has yet to really push the site in any tangible way (short of the coverage the blogosphere is giving it) - who knows what their intentions are…testing, growing it, etc…
secondly, do you really (as in “honestly”) believe that free dating sites are “giving paid sites a run for their money”?! the paid sector, recession and all, is faring better than most online businesses/industries (credit cards, recurring billing vs ad revenue - pick your poison for 2009). sure, the recession is putting a squeeze on all, pushing free and subscription dating sites to turn over new revenue streams, reach more people and convert better, but come on, we (paying industry) are hardly feeling a pinch from free sites; after all, they are one of our best affiliates and source of referrals.
free, freemium, paid can all co-exist, but pound for pound, visitor for visitor, paying sites make more money per visitor than their free counterparts and is a proven business model that is better equipped to thrive in a recession than a free, ad supported model.
Mark - congrats and great to see you on TechCrunch. As you know, I was VP of Product Development for Match.com and I have been blown away by the success of POF and a fan of their process.
In fact, I believe there is a large potential for the integration of social aggregation services like FriendFeed or OpenSocial into a dating experience.
To me, the fundamental issue with dating is the out-of-date business model of pay-to-respond. Given the plethora of information freely presented by individuals online, the 15+ year old business model just isn’t relevant.
I am not saying that paid dating is going away tomorrow but any dating site that doesn’t embrace the integration of a disparate profiles from around the web isn’t providing enough vignettes / views of the individual.
Basically, one of the deepest and most fundamental problems with online dating is … is the person real. The integration of social network profiles and aggregation of multiple profiles into a cohesive whole makes it more difficult to fake identities and would greatly improve the user experience and satisfaction with the service.
Regarding IAC launching a pet-project — I will be floored if it succeeds. Not because of their talent or the concept / implementation but I spoke directly with Thomas at Match about 18 months ago about the that exact topic and received a very lukewarm reception. Match is a cash cow for IAC and they will work hard to protect that EBITDA.
Anyway — I am sure there is more to come about paid vs free vs “social dating”. If I where Google - this is where I would focus.
Ironically most of the ad revenue on the free sites currently comes from advertising the paid sites.
I’m personnally surprised that the paid sites do as well as they do given they’re not cheap and there are alternatives that provide essentially the same service for free. The paid sites claim that the free sites attract the “wrong type of person”, I don’t buy that personally and I expect the free sites (mine included) will significantly cut into their revenues over the next few years.

Yup, this is a pretty bias piece, even with the disclosure.
Yes, free sites get lots of traffic - that’s because they’re and have zero barrier to entry.
With the exception of your client, PlentyofFish, the other free sites make less money in a year than a decent paid site would make in a few weeks.
I suspect PoF is worried that IAC’s free site launch will mean they lose potential revenue from IAC and the other online dating companies that may soon abandon PoF in favour of their own free site.
Free sites are a great way to get people into online dating at no risk, but in terms of making money, they simply can’t compete with the kind of revenues even our partners are making, let alone a dominant dating site.

I’m not sure what to make of this article. Is this really news or is this promotional rah rah for Plentyoffish and WEBDATE by their PR agent?
Mark Brooks gets paid by Plenty Of Fish to promote the site does he not?
http://flickr.com/photos/seaso.....720546638/
Why would you jump into the assumption that the IAC move is to battle with Plentyoffish? Even POF is losing customers to the social networks. Online dating (free or paid) is getting SUCKED DOWN by the fact that free dating and centralized dating is happening on social networks. I would reach the conclusion that the IAC move is to build something light and easy in the social networking space, starting with dating — dipping their toes to see what happens.
Also the data that Brooks presents about the “top dating sites” also smells a little bit like promotion for the companies that pay him to promote their interests.
After all — how do you define what is a ‘top dating site’?
Is it by revenue?
Is it by unique users?
Is it by session users?
Is it by page views?
Obviously the top dating site in the world is Match.Com if you’re counting by revenue.
My assertion is that the top dating site in the world is myspace if you’re counting by page views and unique users (not plentyoffish, webdate, and the other niche players).
I would have expected TC would have done more analysis on this before running a paid promotional message…
I really liked the blog, really good! Congratulations! I’ll leave here a link to anyone who might be interested in learning free magic (tricks), adding more to your sensational blog. Enjoy, hugs!

The idea of the “RealRating” system Down to Earth has implemented is seriously flawed. In theory this concept seems like a great advantage for users of the site, but in reality it’s no different than the feedback between buyer and seller on ebay.
Users will refrain from posting a negative RealRating for another user in fear of receiving a similar rating in return. What could be worse than being active on a dating site where you have stars next to your username showing how much of a liar you are? Try getting a date after your last two out of three gave negative feedback…
On the contrary, the RealRating system could work as planned. Users with outdated pictures may update them after receiving a poor rating and may result in a more honest dating site. Although this still does not protect from simply having a bad date and the feedback consequences that may arise from that situation.
There is definitely a shift away from straight forward subscriptions. More and more, features are becoming free but ultimately, there has to be more than advertising to make up for the shift away from subscription revenue. Hasn’t anyone noticed that most of the ads you see on Plenty of Fish are for other paid dating sites? There are many ad-on services that can be charged for and which, if they provide some value or aid in reaching a goal (finding a real date!), the public are willing to pay for. Virtual gifts etc. At Talkster, http://www.talkster.com, we provide enhanced voice services for dating sites so that users can engage in anonymous voice conversations or have a voice mail box tied to their dating profile. Advertising is only one component of an overall revenue strategy and is heavily dependent on large volumes to work well. Plenty of Fish clearly has the volumes to make this work but they too are layering on other revenue streams as once you have the audience it makes sense to offer them other products or services they will likely buy.
Paid dating sites have finally realized that free online dating is working and is the way to go. I believe social networking sites have paved the way for free sites.
EuropeanKiss.org is a totally free online dating community which is secure, safe and fun with much more features than any dating site, paid or free.
We have introduced a community moderated system where upon registration, you must complete your profile and upload at least 1 photo and then wait for approval by users of the community, during which time you won’t be able to use the site. This is another security layer we have put into place which prevents incomplete profiles and spammers. We have setup a required number of votes and percentage to approve or reject profiles.
We also have put into place the ability to report profile, messages and photo abuse.
Another feature we have introduced is “Certify that this user is Genuine”
If you have met a site member or you are sure for his/her existence and profile/photos, you can certify that this user is genuine. The number of users required to certify a user is set by the site administrator. After the required users have certified a user is genuine, a green check appears next to the user in every search result.
We have found many free dating sites are full of spam and want to change the way free dating sites are percieved.
You can find us at http://www.europeankiss.org

I think the RealRating system won’t work. I’ve seen other startup dating sites attempt this and its basically a way to talk trash about another person if you had a bad date or if you were dumped. If a hot person actually went on a date and met their match then they will no longer use the real rating dating site but jealous exs might trash that person out of jealousy or desire to win them back. On the flip side, Losers will never get a date with constant negative feedback. So it can essentially devolve into Loser Central where everyone is trashing one another! But with all these losers out there, the site could make a killing with affiliate dating for the premium paid sites.
MAKE $50000 IN A MONTH!!! Take 5 minutes to read
Take five minutes to read this and it WILL change your life.
I just read an article in an internet newsgroup describing how to make
$50,000.00 in only one month from a $5.00 investment.
Of course I thought this was ridiculous, or some type of pyramid. I
talked it over with my family, an attorney, and my friends, and they
all agreed it was some sort of scam. I hate scams because usually
someone gets burned, and I didn’t want it to be me! I blew it off for
a few weeks then saw another one in a newsgroup I go a lot and
thought, ” maybe this is legitimate”, besides whats $5.00 , I spend
more than that in the morning on my way to work on coffee and cigs for
the day!
Well, two weeks later, I began receiving money in the mail!, I
couldn’t believe it!
Not just a little, I mean big bucks!!. At first only a few hundred
dollars, then a week later a couple of thousand, then BOOM., By the
end of the fourth week, I had received nearly $47,000.00. It came from
all over the world. And every bit of it perfectly legal and on the up
and up. I’ve been able to pay off all my bills and still had enough
left over for a nice vacation for me and my family.
Not only does it work for me, it works for other folks as well. Marcus
Valppu says he made $57,883 in four weeks, Dave Manning claims he made
$53,664 in the same amount of time. Dan Shepstone says it was only
$17,000.00 for him. Do I know these
Folks?. No, but when I read how they say they did it, it made sense to
me. Enough sense that I’m taking a similar chance with $5 of my own
money. Not a big chance, I admit-but one with incredible potential,
because $5 is all anyone ever invests in this system. Period. That’s
all Markus, Dave or Dan invested, yet their $5 netted them tens of
thousands of dollars each, in a safe, legal and completely legitimate
way. Here’s how it works in 3 easy steps:
STEP 1.
Invest your $5 by writing your name and address on five separate
pieces of paper along with the words, ” PLEASE ADD ME TO YOUR MAILING
LIST”.
(In this way, you’re not just sending a dollar to someone; you’re
paying for a legitimate service). Fold a $1 dollar bill, money order,
or bank note inside each paper, and mail them by standard U.S. Mail to
the following five addressees:
1) Marco Monet
409 NE 107 St
Miami Fl 33161
2) Alain Renaud
2638 Augustin Cantin
Montreal QC Canada
H3K 1E1
3) J.R. Arnold
14777 Wunderlich Dr. 2212
Houston, Texas 77069
4) Leila Khalil
309 E Rand Rd 302
Arlington Heights IL 60004
5) Robert del Rosario
3313 Ashby Field Avenue
North Las Vegas, Nevada 89031
Step 2.
Now remove the top name from the list, and move the other names up.
This way , #5 becomes #4 and so on. Put your name in as the fifth one
on the list.
Step 3.
Post the article to at least 200 newsgroups. There are at least 17000
newsgroups at any given moment in time. Try posting to as many
newsgroups as you can. Remember the more groups you post to, the more
people will see your article and send you cash!
Step 4.
You are now in business for yourself, and should start seeing returns
within 7 to 14 days!!. Remember, the internet is new and huge!. There
is no way you can loose.
Now here is how and why this system works:
Out of every block of 200 posts I made, I got back 5 responces.
Yes, that’s right. Only 5. You make $5.00 in cash, not checks or money
orders, but real cash with your name at #5.
Each additional person who sent you $1.00 now also makes 200
additional postings with your name at #4, 1000 postings. On average
then, 50 people will send you $1.00 with your name at #4, … $50.00 in
your pocket!!
Now these 50 new people will make 200 postings with your name at #3 or
10,000 postings. Average return, 500 people = $500., they make 200
postings with your name at #2 = 100,00 postings = 5000 returns at
$1.00 each that’s
$5,000.00 in cash!!
Finally, 5,000 people make 200 postings each with your name at #1 and
you get a return of $50,000 before your name drops off the list. And
that’s only
If everyone down the line makes only 200 postings each! Your total
income for this one cycle is $55,000.00
>From time to time when you see your name is no longer on the list, you
take the latest posting you can find and start all over again.
So that’s it. Pretty simple sounding stuff, huh? But believe me it
works!
There are millions of people surfing the net everyday, all day, all
over the world. And 100,000 new people get on the net every day. You
know it, you’ve seen the stories in the papers. So, my friend, read
and follow the simple instructions and play fair. That’s the key, and
that’s all there is to it.
Print this out right now so you can refer back to this article easily.
Try to keep an eye on all the postings you made to make sure everyone
is playing fairly. You know where your name should be.
Note: Keep in mind that this has been circulating for over a year, so do not be surprised if some of the addresses are outdated…It won’t matter, because you KNOW your address is correct and since you are starting the process again, all the addresses added by the others will be fresh !!
REMEMBER…. HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY. YOU DON’T NEED TO CHEAT THE BASIC IDEA TO MAKE MONEY!
GOOD LUCK TO ALL, AND PLEASE PLAY FAIR AND YOU WILL WIN
AND MAKE SOME REAL INSTANT FREE CASH!!

About Myself .
I am , romantic but at the same time I try to be objective evaluating the world surrounding me. I do like admiring the seascape which make you feel like leaving for a distant journey, learning something new you have never known before. I like dancing in the discotheques and spending romantic evenings with candlelight listening to quiet melodies. I take interest in fitness, swimming and often make runs along the sea side. I like cooking but tasting something another person has cooked feels fine, too. I know that somewhere in this world there is a person who wants to find love, hope and mutual understanding as much as I do. The relations between a man and a woman should be based on trust and respect, being able to solve any problem by the way of compromises. That’s the way to keep the sparkle of love burning for many years. I have been looking for a wwoman to share all the secret things with him and to feel her presence despite many miles between us… My one and only, where are you? I want to find you so much…

While social networks are bringing in dating features, dating sites are bringing in social networking features!
I still think people would rather use an online dating site to find a date.
Hello, I want to operate affiliate blog who review free dating services. Maybe any body knowing online dating services offering their service for free but still pay their affiliate? Would you send to my email sellyxiu(a)yahoo.com. Many thanks for your suggestion.

The spam, fakes and scammers posting in the comments are the perfect example of why the completely FREE and UNVALIDATED approach doesn’t work.
Am new on this online datings site but what scared of giving out my heart to men just like that because i dont know who is for real..
there are lots of scam on net now and there is no site without a scam….
so be careful when going to a dating site so that you wont fall on a wrong hand…
you are free to contact me bcos i always welcome friend but nothing more than that…
