I have a (re-badged) MSI Wind re-disked-160GB and memory upgraded-2Gbytes. It does everything I want. Office 2007, Visual Studio & SQL Server amonst other things. My only problem is vertical definition (600). I want the new Samsung NC20 (1280x800), I can't get one for love nor money at the moment. I'd take a full size laptop but carrying it for 4 hours a day causes more problems for my back than it's worth.

Yeah, Netbooks are a pain in WinTel's butt. Microsoft loses money selling XP home licenses instead of Vista and Intel loses money selling Atom processors instead of Celerons. That's why WinTel puts so many licensing restrictions on Netbooks. Restrictions like screens smaller than 10.2 inches, single core processors only, 1gb RAM memory limit and a 160gb hard drive limitiation. Geez, a 12 inch dual dual core netbook with 2gb of RAM would be pretty cool. WinTel seems to absolutely hate SSD hard drives too. That's why they put an artificial limit of 16gb on SSD drives. It's a WinTel conspiracy I tell you!

Strange, I have two MSI Winds, and they run XP just fine, Firefox with multiple tabs, e-mail, MSN, IRC client. No stutter or slow-downs whatsoever.

Apart from that I can carry it around in my bag, the one I already carry anyway; not another laptop bag I have to haul around with a 2 kg laptop in it hurting my shoulders. And still have room to take a book or whatever you put in your bag.

The other Wind is almost permanently hooked up to my stereo, playing Last.fm or Wolfgangs Vault, or other music that you can store on its 160GB hdd.

The Author of this article clearly never actually took the time to actually look at some of the Netbook market statistics. Estimates place replacement of high end laptops sales by netbook sales at almost zero. Instead, netbooks are being bought IN ADDITION TO computers people were already buying. Sir your argument is not supported by the facts.

Quite frankly if you look at this article: http://www.tomsguide.com/us/intel-atom-silverthorne,news-937.html it is very clear that Intel is making quite a nice hunk of cash on these Atom processors. In fact I would wager that
Intel doesn't make 150% profits on the Celeron processors that go into low end laptops which would be the most likely thing the consumer would buy instead of a netbook.

Much more likely is that Intel's marketing department has spent years now trying to convey the message that the most awesome computers available have Intel Inside. They don't want Atom to be placed in products that look like full fledged laptops because they won't perform the way they think an Intel brand laptop should.

You should also note that Microsoft has placed explicit and arbitrary requirements on hardware for it to qualify for Windows 7 Starter Edition licensing and pricing. It seems to me that they are much more worried about not selling high end OS licenses than Intel is worried about not selling non Atom chips.
