Haha. A nice glass building is great for midtown Manhattan, but it doesn’t work in a quaint historic neighborhood.

I love their NY store, but this won’t work.

Apple has only one store in our area, fortunately ust a few miles away in an adjacent town. But they had to make some concessions to get into the new, upscale but not ‘modern’ styled shopping area. They have two huge glass windows (and doors) surrounded by beautiful, polished black granite slabs. But they were not allowed to backlight’ the white Apple logo! “Images of fruit are not allowed on storefronts.” What?! Color-scheme codes, OK. Similar outside materials and styles, OK. But what does “fruit” have to do with anything?!! Many of us suspect it mat relate to a few ‘fruitcakes’ in city hall…:-P

OTOH, I completely agree with the people who don’t want this glass cube in the middle of any historic area, my town/area, included!

The Pentagon City store, and all the others in VA and MD, are just “point-of-sale” stores. They are not flagships for the Apple brand. I think that’s what they are after with the proposed glass palace in Georgetown.

BTW, the Pentagon City location is probably provides the worst shopping experience. It’s full of kids playing with the goods, and bringing their iPods in for service. The Clarendon store – also easily Metro accessible – is a far more pleasant place for adults to shop. (and soak in the Apple aura )

Really a glassbox in Georgetown or any historic DC neighborhood…. somehow I think Apple will be okay with a classic architecture building… at least they were in South Beach,FL… they agreed to keep the traditional ArtDeco look there and I’m sure that they will do something similar in DC and keep the look of the neighborhood

There’s already a close store to downtown Washington, DC at the Pentagon City, Virginia 2 stops away on the yellow line at the food court level of the Pentagon Mall, and the Apple store is a few floors above next to a Sony store

Georgetown has no metro stop so its a sturdy walk from the nearest stops Foggy Bottom, DC or Rosslyn, Virgina unless you want to drive

If you cannot afford parking fees in Georgetown, then you cannot afford Apple products. So what is the point? It will not be a store for the “masses” –The one in Virginia has always very few customers.

Incidently, the Georgetown Park Mall is a joke. It has been losing losing for years and since it has the only large underground parking garage in the area Apple would ultimately benefit the mall too.
The rich folks just don’t want the extra traffic and that’s the facts Jack.

I never said anything about Georgetown and needing a metro station I said that they should build near one so that more customers could access it easier than walking from the closest station Foggy Bottom or taking a bus or driving.

Perhaps Apple wants to build in G’town because they want to prevent perceived undesirable individuals [trying hard for a humorous euphemism here] from breaching their yuppified walls. True, they won’t reach many new customers in that location, but a crystal palace in Georgetown would establish a sort of beachhead for them – like a dog marking the best territory.

I agree that Apple should adhere to the architectural standards in Gerogetown if they want a retail outlet there, but I think they want more than that. Maybe they should just project a giant holographic apple over the intersection of Wisconsin and M.

Jon, I previously lived on “O” St. when I was in college down the street from La Pied du Couchon and around the corner from the Mrs. Field’s store when it was located on Wisc. Ave. Restoration Hardware is located at the site of the old Key Theater, the indie movie house around the corner from Cafe Milano. I still live in the heart of DC and pass this spot many times a week. However, my friend Washington is indeed encircled by the beltway. And I’m quite grown-up at least that’s what your wife/girlfriend said.

Hard to believe that you live in DC: Georgetown does not need a “metro station” –it is an exclusive, expensive area to live in DC. There is money here and Apple will be a nice, cool store to have.

The Apple approach in Georgetown has been similar to Wal-Mart’s in so many places, including DC… and provoked a similar reaction from the “locals.”
They need to wise up –they have stepped on too many toes… many powerful politicians live in Georgetown.

The DC store will go on Wisc. Ave at the site of the previous tenant FCUK store. Basically, it comes down to window size and the mindless meddling of bureaucrats. These are the same folks who believe that an old washed out road in DC, Klingle Rd., is some type of national treasure and shouldn’t be repaired because it runs through an affluent neighborhood. Wisc. Ave is filled with old run down stores, cheap restaurants, and faux Italian suits and other types of sketchy merchandise. Apple would be such a plus to the area. In the meantime DC residents will continue to drive to Bethesda and Arlington and take their tax revenue with them and help to improve the schools and lives of those that need it least. Not to worry though, the fine folks on the DC commission that administers pressing matters such as the size of downspouts and such probably send their children to private schools.
Wisconsin Ave is hardly historic and the store fronts are nothing special.

I live in DC and they want to build in the Georgetown area of DC the area is nothing but old buildings from the 19th & late 18th centuries and Apple wants to build a modern building in the area.

It is a historic district and such but Apple wants a modern looking building while other stores Gap, CVS, Adidas, etc. all have buildings that have the old facades.

If apple wants to build there they can get use to it go somewhere else its not hard there are many other areas in DC that they could build where more customers would go; Georgetown is not by the metro stations and the traffic there is horrible.

There are many areas they could move to Union Station, Columbia Heights, Downtown, Gallery Place, Friendship Heights, U Street etc. but they choose a damn historic district and they want to come in there with a modern building.
