Say goodbye to the fun of reading private Twitter messages sent improperly and gathered on DMFail. Sometime today, Twitter says in an email, they’ll change the way private messages are sent so that you can use either [D + username + message] OR [DM + username + message].
It’s a subtle feature change, but one that will avoid embarrassment for people who’ve accidentally made their private messages public.

99% of those DMs were done as jokes anyway, twitter’s stupid for fixing this.
welcome to twitcrunch, twitter news 24/7.
I sure hope they’re giving you options!
NOOO…my blog traffic went from 10 visits a day to 200 with fake DM posts…I love DMfail…booo twitter…I actually felt loved…not so much now…
They need to also make it so that “d @joshuabaer this is direct message” works as well as “d joshuabaer this is a direct message”
How about people that put “d@username” instead of “d @username”?
Or “d @ username”?
How do we stop this monster?
I hope this becomes a trend. As sad is it is, kick twitter to add features and fix bugs we have to create our own sites that work better or highlight their problems then get on TC 10 times and viola! fixed!
Can they ALSO make it so unfollow works as a command? TONNES of folk have gotten embarrassed by this as well..
Can they also make private follow too?
they needs status comments. following conversations doesnt work in current method.
this really is TwitCrunch
just look at the front page. there are literally FIVE twitter stories on the front page. this is ridiculous
I commented on this fact and asked if TC gets paid to market Twitter. They removed my comment. I assume they will remove this one too. At least some will see it. Censorship and other poor ethical practices are nothing new to TC. This blog is losing credibility every day.
My bad on comment removal. I though this was another article. Amazing that there were two on this utterly pointless issue. TC still hasn’t answered my initial question.
Does Twitter pay you?
Seems to be dmfail succeeded
People keep complaining about the frequent post about Twitter, who cares if Mike writes about Twitter no one is forcing you people complaining from reading the post, simply scroll down to the next post. Simple as that.
that kinda sucks, DMfail was a great idea with lots of possibilities.
But the others are right: STOP POSTING SO MUCH ABOUT TWITTER! if we care, we’ll check THEIR blog. Thanks.
I agree!
There’s entirely too much Twitter!
I don’t care if this is Arrington’s blog, I want to see more tech posts about cowbells and how the cowbell industry is rapidly evolving and adapting to Web 2.0!
More cowbell!
I tested the dmfail and got 438 clicks on my tweet. It’s a shame twitter fixed this.
aw. failed.
