Just don't get why anyone feels comfortable using the word retarded as slang. It's demeaning and so not necessary. Ever stop to think about how painful it is to people reading this with special needs??? Yes, they can actually read and have feelings.

A lot of people say that only those with the biggest egos would want this feature but in reality it sounds like those with the biggest egos are the ones that are upset because their tweets might not be seen.

It would be an OPTIONAL feature. Get over yourselves already

Funny analysis. The way you put it, it sounds crazy that someone could be so against it. But I AM against it. Whether or not it is an advanced option, it would still be an option and many people would use it. I don't want people to use it because it would change the dynamics of Twitter.

The problem, the way I see it, is not the "ranking", the problem is that this ranking would be the only way to filter. Imagine that google's search results are sorted by pagerank - and only by page rank. You got something really hot/useful on your site, but until after the next Google's PR update - no one would notice, because you're #7 on page 12.
Twitter will instantly become useless - to those who's voices aren't loud enough - once that feature will be turned on.

We've been discussing this on Twitter for the past couple of days. A lot of the "Top Twitterers" are followed not because their opinions are valued but either because 1) they are minor celebrities and people are curious about their lives or because 2) they get forwarded a lot of good links/information which they retweet to their followers that is, they act as a filtering newsfeed.

I was surprised how little the actual opinion of the Twitterer mattered. It was either voyeuristic curiosity or they were primarily a source of information. Ultrapersonal or completely impersonal, very little to do with their actual thoughts and opinions unless they elaborated upon them in other forums like blogs or books.

I think we might reconsider what a person is intending when they follow another person...friendship, utilitarian, insight into someone's personal life, source of info about parties/events, entertainment value, opinionated people who get discussions started, people who they hate but want to know what they are up to, keeping up with the competition, etc.

There are a variety of reasons why people follow each other and I bet only a portion of them has to do with the fact that someone respects another person's professional opinion on a subject like technology or marketing. I imagine that personal reasons are much more important overall than professional ones.
