Friendship allows people to see what you are doing online. I think the best way to look at it is if you know that person offline, like went to school with them then friend them. But that doesn’t mean you guys are friends or even really talk

You are so so right, people need to stop and think about what affect this has on their family life, when the real people that care the most are right there in front of them.

I've always been fascinated by all the different ways people find to use the same tool... in this case Facebook describes itself as a "social networking tool" that just so happens to define the people you connect with as friends without providing a scale of "closeness" or "seriousness" to rank each friendship by.

I think it's fine that everyone has their own idea of who they become friends with and who they don't wish to have any link what-so-ever with. The only problems arise when a person with a certain idea of how things "should work" attempts to push their own personal idea onto others ... and then there's drama! (Why?)

Do we really need to define everything in our lives?
What are friends, really?
You may find the description of Friendship interesting at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friendship This is what makes XHTML Friends Network (XFN) & Friend of a Friend (FOAF) markup so interesting and funny. The idea about this type of markup is to give web publishers simple methods to describe HTML links to other people & machines. You can learn more about this and Google's Social Graph project at http://webtechman.com/blog/2008/11/30/what-is-xfn-xhtml-friends-network/

It's a basic human instinct to connect with things around us and especially other people. I have friends that I have known for many years and friends that I have only connected with for a few minutes.

It's not you, it's me... LOL
Actually it's what you give, not what you get.

PEACE

I wrote a response to this shortly after it was posted.

I think "buckets" are good enough.

I've always felt these sites needed groups as a first start to handling what kind of "friends" someone's contacts are or are not. But it seems to me these sites should also be able to rank people by interactions as well.

..so who's a friend?

@Loic defines it as someone he feels comfortable calling at 3am if in need of help

@Scobleizer defines it as a 'continuum' where the ball gets rolling via the 'kindness of strangers' effect

@Lorenfeldman defines it in black & white (ie youre either a friend or your not)

It seems with the advent of all the new social networking outlets, anyone can be a 'friend' if there's a mutual desire to reach out. The question is whether one can overlook the flaws of others in RL, which in essence, is the main determinate in whether a friendship grows stronger.

Most people are lucky if they even have one true friend... everyone else is just an acquaintance anyway, sure, acquaintances that we like, but why should online friendship be any different?...

people get too touchy on the subject of friendship... it's fleeting, and in the end, nobody really owns anybody else...

Loren, I moved to San Francisco 6 months ago. I only knew maybe a dozen people and used Upcoming.org to find tech parties.

Fast forward to last week. A simple post to my facebook status or twitter status about wanting to go have a drink and I have people responding that actually are ready to meet up.

These are people I am really friends with and social networks haven't failed me at all. My goal has ALWAYS been to turn internet relationships into real life relationships and I've done that. Internet friendships and real friendships are a two way street. I add people on Twitter and facebook that I met in real life and people that add me online always get a message from me and I hope to meet them in the future.

When traveling to a new city, i try to find people in my field that are up for meeting to have a drink. If you're solely making and losing friendships via the web without any real life interaction with these people, that's your fault but social networking isn't a failure and has made my move across country a lot more pleasurable.
