Pretty self-indulgent. Yahoo is a business. It rises and falls based on its profits. If I saw that a potential new hire had made a video mocking their old employer, I’d stay away.

No kidding… Everyone on here talking s*** about the video is stupid, hello, its not supposed to be brilliant, its not supposed to take down yahoo, its a piece of social commentary, and an effective one, look how many people have watched it… and BTW “Bob Dylan rip-off” guy.. its obviously a reference to Bob Dylan, not an attempt to pass of the idea as her own.. don’t be an idiot…

I made it through a series of layoffs while at Silicon Graphics and Network Appliance. Believe me, it is much worse for the people left behind, especially when the company has been a stellar performer. The morale goes through the floor, the workload increases, there is mass confusion about who does what. My husband who had been layed off from several companies always had gotten nice little severance packages that allowed him to take time off and not worry about a paycheck for a couple of months.

From a management perspective, a layoff is never easy and is stressful. Sometimes a layoff can help the company restructure so that more jobs aren’t lost.

I agree Yahoo does have terrible timing with announcing layoffs before a party and laying off employees before the holidays.

Just a note: The video is a poor rip off of Bob Dylan’s Subterranean Homesick Blues.

Aside from the obvious misspelling of the word friends, I thought it was a great video.

It’s not about entitlement, it’s not about her ego and it’s actually not even about Yahoo (well, not entirely).

It’s a statement about corporate life and the “Office Space” culture. It’s about how modern day companies are more concerned about the company and shareholders than they are their own employees.

If you watched the whole video, you would see that Yahoo was picked due to the way it lyrically rhymed. But she points out all the other companies that are laying off people.

Anyway, I don’t see why people are sticking up for companies. Yes, she was paid and she did her job.. that’s besides the point (to me). Yahoo’s pride or the pride of any of those companies aren’t going to be hurt. They will continue to cut costs in order to beat next quarter’s earnings numbers. But all those people who are being laid off will face difficult personal situations. This is just one way to find a little humor in a very dire situation.

So to all the people here whose life purpose is to serve their Corporate God (Inc.): Screw You Too!

i think she did a good job at describing the impending doom these layoffs hold over employees. Say what you want but layoffs are both business AND personal. Employees that loyally work for a company become attached. Some of the people at my company were undergoing cancer treatment, embarking on their first/second pregnancies..and suddenly were left with a short amount of severance/insurance in a failing economy. It’s truly heartbreaking to watch friends/colleagues go through this and I know that it could happen to me. If anything this whole layoff mess has taught me to always be prepared and one step ahead of “what am I gonna do now?”

It is amusing to see all the people here who feel threatened by this woman who is obviously smart, creative and successful by ANYONE’s definition. She surely is more accomplished than most anyone posting here. And c’mon, she’s a babe.

It is also amusing to see people defend the big corporations against an individual, even if that individual was working as a consultant. There is an important message in the video that goes WAY over the heads of people whining about “socialism”. Chances are very high, I’d say, that more Obama supporters “get it” than Bush/Cheney/McCain supporters.

The song and video are quite well done, IMO. Great job, Michelle! You go girl!

Her letter is much better and much more insightful than her Country-Western-Dylan-Rip-off video.
