Voltaire used to say what could be translated into: "I disagree with you, but I'll always fight so that you can express your opinion".

I'm French and an entrepreneur. I really feel offended by such a poll. That's very much against European cultural values. Very shameful imho.

[...] Second, this post is not a complaint about having been censored but just a reflection about it. TechCrunch is Michael Arrington’s blog, and he is totally within his rights to remove any comment he finds inappropriate on his property without giving any explanation to anyone. In other words, he has the right to censor on his property, even if it he does not like to be cencored himself. [...]

I thought much of what you said had pertinence and relevance appropriate to many Europeans attitude toward business, especially in the IT arena, especially in the start-up phase. I wouldn't take issue with it.

I also thought you were extremely rude and whether intended or not, you came across as arrogant, patronizing and superior, ergo disrespectful to your hosts. Whether your superiority is deserved or not, I'm sure you'd argue it is, you can't deny there are many ways of saying things, you could just have easily made your point with the illusion of mutual respect and the illusion that you open your mouth as part of a dialogue rather than dictating how things are.

Also, I think the more enlightened Europeans, despite being overjoyed at the Obama/Bush house move, judge America based on the Americans they meet, or hear talk in person, and I think some on the Gilmore couch at the end did very badly, I for one can glace over most of the oration but I can't be anything but angry for some in the group embarrassing Loic.

Finally, I have to say the vote is petty and childish!

Ooops, seems some finnish ppl as some of the french are super cool and do not take the critique in very personal way.

From the comments here its easy to get the funny picture of euro-ppl pushing the things toward the eden garden idea without work at all, and everyone being happy and free with big puch of dough. Wonder why most of the venues in eu are less successful than the american counterparts and eu govt tries to force poor policies toward the solution of "those big st00pid americans are winning with us on all grounds, lets build quiero to compete with google" problem.

Oh said enough on this one. As was said in some picture book, never argue with ignorant as they have been playing their game for last 30 or so years and they cant beat You with just any non-rational argument that will come to their mind. For You Mike, I would use the knowledge You learnt so far from this story to Your and valley's startups good as much as possible and leave the volatile ones with their ways (sub-optimal ways but their personal ones).

To say frankly that takes a big brain to invent the new service, pair of tough nuts to take the risk, plus 13 hours a day of work to have it done well and on time - none of which seem to be the appreciated/promoted features to posess nowadays at least in some countries of western europe.

Anyway, good luck from me too to the european enterpreneurs who do and try their best, no matter whether they fail or not.

And as for trying to change the old ways in euro-area, when they get really pressed against the wall they either ban Your right to have different view (which some of the european societies have mastered and are using with great pride) or when arguing with us ways - they will hide behind a 2000 years of history non-argument. Here come the Chinese and Israeli with 4k years of history. ;-)

Lol, yeah now it makes sense. Vente-privee is a step-child, that doesnt get recognized. But why, lets see. A great name that lacks any direct or indirect association in any non-french speaking country throughout europe, meaning like being recognized in 1.5 out of 25 or so countries. Good score in the beginning. Looking at their page, You wont get anymore clue about their business from a brief one-page description in english. Lets summarize, meaningless name+entry protected by password+no demo+brief and meaningless one page description= a great and famous website? Personally, I would give them "on a way to deadpool" mark. Judge by Yourself.

Lol, we europe dont need You, thats a good one. Unless we get into some deep sh-t with middle-east or the reds or as 50 years ago with this brave and misunderstood nation ;-). Lets wait, its still to come. Yeah, we europeans will win at all chance, although the 90% of capital is based in us and 90% of products we use goes through us-based corps. Lol. As to the innovation and risk-taking I wont double post it, available elsewhere.

Hello Michael and other commenters. Sorry to hear about Your story at le web (I need to admit though its not a great surprise, the general french and truth dont match well). I wont take any side in this situation, I lack the data, right? Anyways, please note that (except for few not-so-exposed exceptional great souls originated in France I had a chance to meet) the general view of The French (ones that get public exposure and ones who procclaim themselves as know-alls) are generally perceived in most of Europe as snot-nosed buffons with kinda-commie views on social order, law and economy. As it can be seen from last 15 years, their companies arent nearly as successful in global run as the us-based ones (is there at lest 3 of them in global top 100 high tech venues?). So everyone can judge for themselves. Cheers and good luck to techcrunch.

Michael,

Did you read the whole post from Loic?

It looks like you just read the first paragraph then write this post.

May be you miss time reading (or writing), in the end this post is not very constructive.

Did you read the whole post from Loic?

It looks like you just read the first paragraph then write this post.

May be you miss time reading (or writing), in the end this post is not very constructive.

Get over it, Michael. There are any number of ways of describing situations without dipping into profanity and disparagements. You acted (act?) like a child at someone else's conference. And you should get some flack for that.

More than that, when you have postings of this sort (touching on personal sensitivities) you remind readers that this indeed a blog and not a true news site. Perhaps that's the idea, but one might ask why you'd alienate part of your readership and refuse a certain level of legitimacy if you're not gaining a corresponding new readership. As a new-ish reader, I had viewed this site as more a tech news site than a Michael Arrington blog. Sorry if I was mistaken.
