If you are interested in how to use the Web to create a grassroots political movement, tune in today and tomorrow to the Alliance of Youth Movements Summit, which is being sponsored and livestreamed by Howcast. Right now, James K. Glassman, Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, just finished talking about How To Build a Movement Against Terrorism and up next is Oscar Morales, an engineer deom Columbia who set up a Facebook group called One Million Voices Against the FARC that organized in mass demonstrations on the street in that country.
Tomorrow morning there is a panel with Obama’s media team that will explore how they used teh Web to win the U.S Presidential election. You can see the entire schedule here. Howcast has also made some (simplistic) videos on How to Smart Mob, How to Circumvent an Internet Proxy, and How to Create a Grassroots Movement Using Social-Networking Sites.

Why is it that when people say, “save the world”, they are always talking about non-for-profits and Africa? Yeah, those things are great, but businesses are able to change the world in other ways.
True. It’s a proven fact that around half the US citizens can’t even point out our own country when given a map of the world, so why is it such a focus for us to dance around the African crisis in order to save the world? I’m in no way being insensitive to the matter, I believe that using a phrase such as “saving the world” should be reserved for something such as greening the planet, a crisis that involves more than just one continent.

Alliance of Youth Movements ?
Kind of has a spooky ring to it if you ask me..
How about a bigger push sell more baseball and apple pie around the globe? It works wonders every time it’s tried..
Hi
Thankyou for a very informative post. The net is a very powerful tool to make change around the world. Pollies and corporations are just realising it.
Steve
“used teh Web to win the U.S Presidential election”…. lulz.
Retard…. re-read your articles. “teh” … really?
hahah you clearly are not familiar with internet memes… teh is a joke among bloggers, techies, gamers, etc. the world over. I guess the irony of it was lost on you.
“…introducing Oscar Morales, an engineer deom Columbia who set up a Facebook group” … What is ‘deom’?? Does Techcrunch use a spellchecker ????
Yeah it sounds like a marketing campaign.. The one that made Volcom popular as a brand: Youth against establishment… Right, Volcom itself is the establishment… At the end of the day, all these movements are more about joining the status quo, while giving the illusion one is independent and non conformist.
It’s true that Website can change the world.Obama used his Social media and his own web for election campaign. We can change the world with a little blog.Even Clinton is using web for his Charity promotion in USA even in entire World.
Thanks for great information.
It goes to show the power of Web 2.0 to mobilize political action for or against a cause

in responce to some of the comments: Its always important to understand if someone or something actually requires “saving”. Giving food to people in Africa can often make things worse and letting events taker there course often works out the best rather than interfering with ideals. Interesting stuff
