That is one fugly search bar that YouTube added (without warning) to embedded videos.
Update: if you want to turn it off, simply add the parameter “&showsearch=0″. More information here.
Also, the site itself received a facelift, one that I’m not loving:

Wow. Nice job there.
Its nice idea but youtube may loose some ad revenues!
Lets take a senario like i have embedded video into my own site and i have search on my video level, i dont go to youtube site to search for videos which will impact youtube ad revenues and they need more money on additional servers to handle new search quries !!!
Youtube needs to show ad before it displays search results
to generate revenue.

current search button (background and text color) doesnt match with youtube video layout! they need to comeup with something lightweighted css based silver text color and black background with some bevel to it.

This is absurd ….. there is nothing wrong with Youtube. Its just people are too old to like changes….once you get used to the look-and-feel, you will like Youtube like you use to like it before….
http://www.livbit.com
Agreed! — I immediately used the search to find chihuahua videos, and spent some time here watching a couple when normally if the embedded video is not of interest, I leave the page.
I am glad that the search bar recedes while I am watching. If it were persistent, I would probably be griping too. I am against the concept of overlaying persistent images over video, though have been directed to do it in past work. (Yuck!!)
I find the chunky YouTube logo in the bottom right corner of the video to be far more annoying than the search bar.
It might be ugly, but it is functional and I bet it drives a lot of great targeted advertising and user data.
yeah, it’s going to drive me right to vimeo.
I don’t know, I kind of like it dude.
Mike, you forgot one big new kickass feature:
it’s called “INSIGHT”. it’s all about stats.
Check out any of your own videos and you’ll see an AMAZING number of statistics like so:
http://snurl.com/73wd7
It’s extremely detailed for each video.
My favorite feature is Discover/YouTubeSearch function. It tells you the keyword your viewers entered to find your video. It’s extremely useful as to find how to improve your tags and video name.
No Michael… Dailymotion
Yeah, I agree with Micheal. It’s not like it’s functionality that someone would really find useful for an embedded video.
Why don’t they just cut the features to what’s actually necessary, not bloating it with extra clutter—making it into a mini Adobe Reader.
I think it is a bit more sophisticated than driving “targeted advertising”. Youtube wishes to become a self-contained search engine IMHO. Notice when type a search into the bar it only returns youtube video titles. The message to an SEO: better get your stuff up to youtube in videos to access this traffic. More videos leads to more views / users for youtube … which leads to more videos. An article from a few weeks back that touched on the subject–
http://www.read...next_google.php
what they need to do is add the view in full screen funtion to embedded videos
But they do have that.
thats true it does seem to work well and it disappears and isnt to intrusive so its not all that bad. I think this is a way to get more people surfing threw the vids. it would make it easier if u saw something on an embedded vid and wanted more vids on the topic instead of going to you tubes main site just type it in there!
I noticed it this morning. Very Ugly indeed!
I’ve been seeing this for a while…
ive seen it for a while and i actually like it a lot
For the love of Saint Michael, that is one ugly ass search bar. Jebus.
Though, I wonder what happens if I type “rick roll” in…
Jason Nellis, u shut urself up. You are lame, u dumbshat.
wow. this is awesome. truly awesome. best post by far. youtube unleashed. one stop player box.
Today two of the ugliest things happened to Youtube : A search bar in a embedded video and the new tabs and layout design , makes me wanna Eww so bad.
I don’t mind the new tab layout – I kinda like it…
I totally agree with you on the embedded video search box though. I hear yah.
It’s messing up the design of my website
I guess it’s not THAT bad…but I’m a bit web-OCD.
Wow another worthwhile post on techcrunch. Always complaining about the little things in life.
And the worst is when publishers embed a smaller version of the video . The search bar completely covers the thumb
see http://zi.ma/e00689
We just Fixed it.
try adding
&showsearch=0
to an embed and it goes away.,
awesome
What about on Wordpress where the youtube video looks like this under Manage Posts, Visual layout
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0D92AS8HqLA&]
Would I go into HTML layout to add &showsearch=0? Where exactly does one add that extra code? Thanks
As user ‘Promise Aid’ describes later on in his/her comment, if you use that for WP, nothing happens. Ugly search bar still there.
I tried both Visual and HTML with the showsearch code but nada. I think its not possible with embeded video on WP
Actually really cool feature – now users can search videos without leaving your website it’s like a mini Youtube on your own site
Wouldn’t this be better : A search bar + related videos after we finish watching this video ? The search bar is totally distracting !
That’s disgusting! It means: content on your site you can’t control and you don’t wanna have on your site. Just imagine someone is playing the “worst band ever”* in context of your site …
*add yours here;)
i think its pretty cool – the search bar goes away after the video starts and the search > multi thumbnail is pretty cool – I agree its not the prettiest thing, but pretty darn functional
mehhh, it’s okay, vimeo is still there.
I think that ugly bar just burned into my eyes. I can’t see any other video without noticing an ugly bar on top of it.
The search bar is not new, it’s implementation is.
I’m actually surprised with the search bar popping up before the video starts to play, as Youtube announced on their blog, this feature would only be shown after the video finished playing.
http://www.yout...try=zLSoxZyhau8
I think this makes for one horrible UI. I have a browser search bar, a website’s search bar, and a search bar for each embedded video. How many places to search, do you need?
Youtube might want to rethink the geo-redirect on their blog page :/
addeded?
What the f… is this? Design is ugly. My got!!!
fsasf
OK, it’s youtube, as far as i am concerned, youtube is far away from beauty
The search bar is really ugly. They should have gave us an option do we want to embed it or not (but they knew no one would embed it that way).
Seems like they could use Google Website Optimizer before making such a big changes (they should test it first).
I agree with Michael. If YouTube rolls out that search bar as standard on all embedded vidoes, I’m switching to other video hosts. The point of an embedded video is to allow content to appear in context. A search bar as indiscreet as what they are doing pulls people away from a site. It’s very heavy handed.
Completely agree, innovatr!
If you were worried about how your videos look, you’re already using Vimeo.
If you want traffic, you’re on YouTube, and this will only increase the traffic YouTube drives to the videos it hosts.
I have been seeing this feature for sometime…maybe about 2 weeks or more. i like the new facelist.
It seems google likes to make things ugly sometimes. Like they couldn’t have done a clean implementation.
Thank god you can take it away. I don’t have to abandon youtube yet. Lets see what evil they come up with next.
That search bar is horrible. Distracts users from content and can screw up a design if you are using embeds throughout a page.
The &showsearch=0 tip is priceless. Great job.
How about making ZERO be the default, and keep all the embeds looking how they always have. Ok youtube? Let’s see how many people voluntarily add the search to their embeds.
I agree. It seems that when YouTube makes visual changes such as this, they could at least make it opt-in on videos currently embeded.
Wow. this is UGLY. Why would youtube do such a stupid thing?
that´s all a step back. don´t like this solutions.
Is a total disaster. Search on pause/movie finished is ok and useful but right from the start is one ugly stupid feature
I totally agree with you Michael. It might be functional but it does screw up the design of other people’s website.
However, I’ve got an English language blog for Germans learning English and so today they have the pleasure of finding out about two “new” words: “to uglify” and “fugly”. Thanks
OMFG. I noticed the search bar on my embedded videos today. Its ugky as hell.
Thanks YouTube. Morons.
this thing should be an option
What? You add a search bar to your embed videos and you get a post on Techcrunch??
*drops his beer and runs to the basement to “work” on his design*
Hate the new design!
Sometimes you can do too much tweaking and it ends up hurting the main product.
Hopefully YouTube either hides the search bar by default or gives users the option. The current look is awful.
I love this new functionality, it is awesome and a great idea!
yeah its ugly alright…..but youtube have never been to concerned with the aesthetics of their application.
The search bar helps you to search any YouTube video without going to the main site. It has plenty of use, that is more important than how it looks, we have seen worse things than this.
Oooh. Facebook connect is looking good.
Also, the search bar appears only after the video is finished. If you guys want we will ask YouTube to put a Victoria Secret model in there
Oh great.. I thought for a minute I was losing my mind. The search box is a terrible idea – why? Because if you have these videos on your site and you’ve customized your video size and now the word “youtube” is gone from the upper left … your members think their search box is part of your site… and their expectations are that it will search within the site. And to top it off, the search doesn’t even work yet. So now your video is half way covered behind a big search box, your members think the search function on your site doesn’t work and you’re stuck with large ugly search boxes that don’t match your site’s design. Wonderful! I’m with you Michael.. I’m heading to vimeo.
but then when was google considered the OMG design ?
————————–
http://www.linkbuilderz.com
I think this is a good idea but it is very ugly.
This will make more people stay on my site rather than leaving to go towards youtube.
However I do have my own embedded video on my homepage that is quite small and it looks really ugly.
I’m sure they will be developments. If it stays like this I will have to use another video player for my homepage
It would be great if embedders had the option of turning it on or off
Or have a search icon in the corner that brings up the bar when it is clicked on.
Here’s how to remove
If your embed code looks like this
embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/WNArthV0wBA&hl=en&fs=1″
add this
;showsearch=0
so it will look like this:
embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/WNArthV0wBA&hl=en&fs=1;showsearch=0″
and the search box will be gone.
So uglifies is the newest word? Interesting.
What is with Youtube anyway? We got that they are fighting with many things at the same time ( Viacom, Lulu, etc. ) and they are looking for more profit. But this one was a very cheap move. You just planned my day : I’ll add not showsearch=0 to my embeds but rel=0 !! At least this way, you can’t bug my visitors in any way, you funny Youtube.
here is how you can remove the search box:

Jeff.
I think it is very usefull and the whole facelift also kicks ass…
http://the-anti...y.blogspot.com/
This search feature… SUX… t
ditto…it should be an option NOT forced on every vid.
