Vertical Integration from a large manufacturing perspective is ALWAYS beneficial in the short to medium run because of the cost savings. With horizontal integration each company has a board, executives, marketing departments, etc... All of this redundancy and extra costs disappear when one company owns all the means of production. I mean, you're great titans of the 19th and 20th Century operated this way. Standard Oil is the best example of it. Vertical Integration saves tremendous costs, eliminates certain risks and promotes scalability. Vertical Integration has some definite advantages.

Tesla has been trying to build many of their components, and as much of their drive train from scratch as they can, which is one reason some say, why they are floundering. They also modified the Lotus Elise design so much that it dramatically increased the cost (such as lowering the door sill 2 inches.) reportedly something Martin Eberhard disagreed with. (He was subsequently ousted.) BTW Tesla has an electric motor, not an engine.

Actually, Porsche is discontinuing that relationship in favor of a outsourced mfg for Boxter closer to home.

Cars aren't computers, a significant aspect of car ownership is service and repair. A large part of the value of a large scale operation is a national dealership and service network. Would you buy a car that can only be serviced where it was manufactured?

Before we blame the workers at the Big Three for the company’s problems we need actual pay stubs from workers at Toyota and Mercedes at American plants doing the same job to compare. We would also need actual compensation packages for the CEO's of the companies; otherwise we are plotting our graph first and then making the data fit.

This is pure fantasy and is unlikely to ever happen. Why? Because unlike the computer industry - the automobile industry and the UAW have clout and pump a huge amount of money to lobby the government. Additionally, the outsourcing of our auto industry is viewed as un-American. 2mm+ jobs would be affected with outsourcing.

That being said, the current system is not efficient and not working. Downsizing and getting rid of the UAW contracts (unlikely as well) is an answer. There is no reason that the auto industry can't downsize and offer more of an American Apparel model than an Apple iPod model.

This idea is a good start, but is missing some key concepts. I stumbled across this while researching my own similar ideas, although with some slight variations. (trackback coming soon)

The important thing is that the discussion has begun, and with enough proper feedback, a polished idea can be hashed out that might actually make a difference.

Well done. Let's see more of this.

Of course, Apple is the most vertically integrated computer/CE company in its industry, having essentially had its own microprocessor until its recent switch, designing its hardware, writing its operating system, software, and running an online media and apps store. Mike, if you think Detroit should follow Apple's lead, perhaps they should buy their own gas stations and tire stores, that way once you start buying GM gas, you'll never be able to switch to Toyota.
