10,000 iPhone Apps
by Michael Arrington on November 29, 2008

148Apps, which tracks and reviews iPhone Apps, says 10,000 applications have now been released on the iPhone App store (the site is named after the fact that you can add up to 148 applications to an iPhone or iPod touch).

A tribute page shows a mini icon for every application. And it also gives some interesting data. About 24% of apps are free; 35% cost $.99. The average cost is $3.12, including free apps. About 34% are games or entertainment, and there are 49 weather related apps for the iPhone despite the fact that a weather app is built in.

If you’re an iPhone user, tell us the apps you can’t live without in the comments. The ones I use every day: Aqua Hoops, Recorder, SearchMe, iGolf, Google, Zombie (its cathartic), iThread (CrunchBase on the iPhone), and the social networks (Loopt, Facebook, MySpace).

  • One of those 10K apps is iSports: the best sports experience for the iphone. Just launched last week. Try it out.

    • yeah, iSports is sweet. Much better than sportstap or sportacular. Haven’t seen much coverage of it online though.

I also use loopt a bunch.

      • same person or co-employees, it’s hard to tell.

      • I think Sportstap is better…

      • I’m an iphone sports addict–I like to follow tons of games on my iphone while watching the best one on my hd. I’ve now tried all the major sports apps.

There are three “all sports-in-one” apps, which is pretty important b/c I follow both NFL & NBA this time of year (not to mention the aapl app limitation): Sportacular, Sportstap, and Isports.

Each aims to give you near real time scores, player stats, news, & standings.

Sportacular is the oldest and most popular sports app, but its age is showing. It doesn’t cover as many sports as Sportstap, has too many ads, and doesn’t look as clean. It was great until mid-year when the quality of apps seemed to jump ahead.

Sportstap covers the most sports including car racing & world cup soccer. They have lots of depth in player stats too. The interface is simple but very functional–it’s probably more for the true sports junkie rather than the casual user. It’s like staring at a bloomberg terminal–it’s not pretty but it will get you the data you want.

Lastly there’s Isports, which I’ve only been using for a week because it’s new. This app has tons of graphics, which means less room to display tons of graphics–great for a casual experience but perhaps not best for the diehards. It looks much nicer than the other two but doesn’t cover as many sports (no NHL–assuming this will come in an update soon) and has less depth in its stats dept. Isports also has its own challenge your friends sports trivia game, which I haven’t yet tried but hear is pretty cool.

bottom line: I find myself switching back and forth between Sportstap and Isports–I use Isports to “watch” the games as the scores change and new plays happen, and Sportstap to dive in if I really need to see something more (either a different sport or an obscure stat).

Hopefully that’s a bit more useful than some of these other comments.

      • TheScore sports app is much better than Sportap and Sportacular. Tons of sports to pick from, including EPL and Champions league soccer, live play updates, and hands-down the best looking interface off them all. Plus video clips for NBA and NHL… kicks butt.

    • I like iDogbook (http://www.idogbook.com), but I might be biased :-)

    • I listen to sports updates every morning on the way to work on Stitcher (free app)

    • I don’t think you can say that any one application is the best as it’s all subjective and down to personal choice.

You may like sports and it might be a great application but from my perspective… i.e. somebody who hates sports this is never gonna be the best application.

Luckily this life takes all sorts and we are all entitled to our opinions, still loving my iphone :)

  • Not an application, but frienfeed for iphone gives me the news before everybody :-)

  • Way to much work to build that page. Pretty cool though…

  • I can’t manage without Around Me. Uses my current location and tells me where the nearest hotel, supermarket, gas station etc etc is, the exact location and a map of how to get there.

  • The ONE must have iPhone app for users is Flock- It adds the capability to send photos from your iPhone to other people via text message. Well worth the buy.

  • Being a wine aficionado, I can’t live without Cor.kz as it is the only app that utilizes CellarTracker for community generated wine reviews.

I think it lives up at http://cor.kz.

  • Good stuff. hopefully android community will get to that milestone after paid apps get introduced next year.

  • Free: Google Earth, Pandora, iSports
    Paid: Motochaser

  • outside of contacts and the phone google maps by far. it is the main app
but i really like plum caddy for golf it is an absolutely amazing free golfing app.

  • i did a search for FitPhone, an app that IS on the iTunes store, and I could not find Flock (mentioned above) on either that site nor iTunes store

  • What is the definition of an iphone app? For example, if you write a scaled down version of your webapp (but it is still a browser app essential (like Facebook’s iphone version, not the iphone app) – could this be counted as an iphone app?

I am working iphone.pokerdiy.com so that you can upload your poker league results from the poker table (instead of an offline score recorder and publisher). I was just wondering if this counts as an app.

WRT to the question – I can’t live without the Oakley Surf Report, THNL Game (Apple) and a game called TapDefense (free), like TowerDefense.

  • I have 3 different Twitter apps that I like. 1) Twittelator to see replies and DMs at the same time. 2) Twinkle to see people that I do not follow but are X miles aways from me. 3) Twitterrific to get a long stream of messages from people that I follow.

I also like the Bloomberg app to track news and my portfolio.

Tris is a great (and free) Tetris game. Pac-Man lite is also free.

Finally, the Qik app is great. I have a fist generation (not jailbroken) iPhone and the Qik beta works great.

    @SocialJulio

  • Twinkle, Facebook. V.Villagers, msot kind of come and go :P
Would love to have last.fm, but it isn’t released in Australia yet.

  • appbubble? appflation? appitis? apperation? sooner or later somebodies gonna have to get some work done. the best apps are the ones that breed efficiency and there are only gonna be a handful of major players in that arena.

    3GLocator.com – signal strength

  • I am to the point where my life would be very different without my iPod Touch in my pocket. Here’s a breakdown of my essential apps:

    Free

    Facebook
    Twitterific
    Light
    Wikipanion
    Stanza
    AirSharing
    Evernote
    Pandora

    Paid

    Tetris
    Ambiance

    For My Nephew

    Crazy Mouth Lite
    Bubbles
    iZoo Free
    Make a Face Free
    Jelly Car
    Scribble

    I love this thing.

  • Facebook, Yelp, and Showtimes are the ones I use the most besides the app we developed ourselves which shall not go mentioned, since that would be a shameless plug.

  • I play Trace every day along with PapiJump, iGolf. I also use Facebook and my free RSS Reader too. iHunt was fun for like 3 days.

  • My friends were shocked to find out that I had maxed out my iPhone with apps. I do use just about all of them. Some games I’ve lost interest in and keep them for others to play. The apps I use the most are: CameraBag, Facebook, Ambiance, Texas HoldEm (Apple), Pageonce, Tweetie, and the Say Who app. Very useful while driving.

    • Erm, you’re not making calls while driving are you Robin?!

There are some hidden gems under the ‘categories’ view on iPhone. I use Speedtest for connection tests, iBART for train times, iTV for film/tv, OpenTable for restaurants and iFlipr for flash cards…

  • I use Twitteriffic, Facebook, Live Poker, and Rotzy the most.

If you don’t know about Rotzy, check it out… its a cool up and coming social networking / photo app. Share photos, follow other users’ photo feeds, basically share your life through photos!

You can also auto-post to twitter, facebook, tumblr, etc.

Yes, I’m a dev on the app, so I’m biased lol :-) Enjoy!

  • Wicked site, I bookmarked it for future reference. I tried a few apps on my friends iPhone, and liked most of them, but I still stay loyal to my Blackberry. Have a good Saturday night everyone!

  • I think we’re pretty partial to our AppVee iPhone App ;)

  • The ones I find myself using everyday over and over:

    Twitterrific –
    http://itunes.a...540316&mt=8

Projects – (Basecamp for the iPhone)
    http://itunes.a...036279&mt=8

    Shazam -
    http://itunes.a...993459&mt=8

    Facebook –
    http://itunes.a...882215&mt=8

… and of course the usual Mail.app, Safari.app etc.

  • The apps that I can’t live without – Pet Earth Lite, Mobile News, Live Poker, and Lux Touch.

  • My top 10 apps: NetNewsWire, Twitterific, Facebook, RTM (Remember The Milk), Jott, Evernote, Instapaper, AIM, Yelp, Light. I use each of them almost daily.

  • I want to see which apps are selling for $899, $400+, etc. is there a way to sort by price (highest to lowest)?

  • This is exactly the kind of ad where commeting should be turned off. You will only get people hawking their own app and no real unbiased opinion.

  • My favorite Apps are:

Twittelator, BlogPress (for Blogger), Wordpress, LiveJournal, Facebook, Pandora, Google, Joost (thanks for TechCrunch for the highlight), too many games to list (books too), Evernote, Documents (syncs with Google Apps–you can edit them too).

    PS

You can only add 129 apps, not 148! 19 of those apps are from Apple.

  • I’m a big fan of AroundMe, Pandora, Twitterific, and CityTransit (huge if you live in NYC and don’t know the subway system inside out)

  • Free:
    - evernote
    - twitteriffic
    - say who
    - box.net
    - pandora
    - iMapMyRun
    - social network apps

    Paid:
    - easywriter pro
    - flick fishing
    - crash bandicoot

  • IM+All-In-0ne Messenger is my favorite.

148Apps is definitely more comprehensive than http://iphoneap...cationlist.com/

  • I am addicted to Feeds, Twitterific, Facebook and zhiing (sends and receives locations – must have for a heavy traveler).

  • My favorite app is MyNetDiary – never thought I can keep a food diary, but this one is surprisingly easy, searches foods like Google suggest. Other than that – EverNote and pTerm – pretty basic SSH client, but works well.

  • I didn’t think they’d reach 10,000 until early next year. It’s simply amazing. It’s a shame if Apple can’t make money from the App Store. At this rate, it seems like they might surpass 20,000 by the middle of next year. How can you decently catalog so many apps. Apple is going to have to come up with some new way of organizing in the App Store, for certain.

  • I use PopMath for my kids. They love it to learn math.
    PopMath

  • NetNewsWire – so I can read news while waiting in lines
Facebook – so I can read useless stuff when there’s no news
AirSharing – so I can have my files with me (and read ebooks)
Twitterfon – so I can tweet!

Shazam is quite handy to have and Trapster could save me from a speed ticket or two in unknown territories.

All the rest, I almost never use.

  • silicon valley dropout - November 29th, 2008 at 11:10 pm PST

i never knew there was a limit to how much apps you can have

  • Things is absolutely indispensable – along with the desktop counterpart.
Google Earth, Bejewelled 2 (fantastically addictive), Facebook, Twitterfon

  • I’d put another vote for Instapaper. Even the free version is really really handy – by far the most used and most useful app on my phone at the moment… And the givemesomethingtoread feature is really cool too!

  • At the http://www.ipho...bootcampnyc.com we’re creating some amazing apps for the travel industry. Should be coming out in a few weeks. Can’t say much more until they do.

  • This is the reason why developers are developing for the App store. See my post about why. http://blog.cos...tial.com/?p=166

  • Can’t Live Without:
Google Maps (maps), New York Times (news), beamME (vCard beaming), Crosswords (obvious), Things (task management)

  • Emergency Kit: it is the most useful of the aid applications.

  • Facebook, BigOven Recipes, and Yelp

  • Got my iPhone on Friday only .

    I loved these most :

    Twitterific
    NYtimes
    Remote
    Facebook
    Sportstap

Any favs on rss readers ???

  • Sunday (and monday and thursday) is all about Twootball for me (twootball.com) of course.

Twittelator Pro and Facebook are the other 2 apps always open on my phone

  • Arrington this is a bullshit post – theres nothing special about the site, the same data is available on other sites…are you doing favors for people?

  • I use Save Benjis price comparison, Pandora and VNC.

  • Apple themselves were reporting 15K apps last week. So at least one of Apple and 148A are incorrect.

  • Some of the apps I really like:
    Wikipanion
    Shazam
    Sports Tap
    Air Sharing
    Fieldrunners
Sync in a Blink (Google contact sync)
    Evernote
Say Who (searches contact list using audio recognition)

  • Just posted a blog posting about “living with the iPhone” late last week.
