Right on time for Thanksgiving day, µTorrent – client of choice for many BitTorrent users – has released a Mac version in beta, after a rudimentary alpha release was leaked a couple of months ago (on a BitTorrent tracker, at that).
The lightweight µTorrent client for Windows was first publicly released in September 2005, and was acquired by BitTorrent in 2006, who continued development on the application and promised to release a Mac version. It has now arrived, but as Torrentfreak points out, the Mac release only runs on Leopard/Intel Macs at the moment and may still contain serious bugs.
Alternatives include Vuze (formerly Azureus) and Transmission.

epic.
Hurray, at last
I stopped downloading Torrents more than a year ago ! I guess I just don’t find it necessary for me !
How is amount of torrents downloaded this year compared to the amounts downloaded previous years ?
Still waiting for a linux version.
you’ll be waiting a long time luser!
Azureus ( or Vuze now ) is there for Linux and works pretty sweet !
still has to catch up to the current mac champ… transmission.
Of course it only runs on Leopard and Intel. Does anyone ever release Mac software for older versions of MacOS? Hells no.
“Simon Morris, BitTorrent’s VP of Product Management told TorrentFreak that they are working on getting the bugs in PowerPC fixed as well as back-porting to Tiger.” from http://torrentf...version-081127/
I gues some company’s still do it. Hells yeah!
Why should I switch? Transmission has all I need. I think uTorrent missed the momentum…
yeh — whats the benefit of utorrent over transmission?? am i missing something here?
@techzod: “I downloaded the Mac uTorrent beta this afternoon and ran some tests for comparison against Transmission. For similar CPU usage and consistently less memory use, uTorrent downloaded 5 times the data in a 1hr period.” from http://forum.ut...ic.php?id=49966
uTorrent has a big plus over Transmission because of it’s speed and small memory usage. Then again uTorrent is still in beta and has some bugs (my speed cap doesn’t work). Also the famous webUI is not incluided in the beta. It’s a first step and I’m looking forward for the next one!
Surely Transmission has a polished interface, but it is not really network-friendly. Last time i tried to use it it crashed my wifi network instantly. I switched to Vuze which might not have a pretty interface, but works really well. Moreover you can have a plugin which takes RSS feeds + regexp and automatically download the new stuff.
This is going to be GREAT, I’m so stoked, I love Apple products and wouldn’t change my Macbook Pro for anything in the world!
Have a great weekend everyone, and Think Outside The Box!
Can somebody summarize the advantages it has over Vuze?
that’s really a good news for my friend. now he can use u on his great mbp.
uTorrent on Mac? Wait…how many of you use Mac… umm 2/10, right?
So how many of you will download torrents when using Mac? maybe 1/100?
Add these up…
uTorrent for Mac = very very bad decision
hmmm BitTorrent stirs up thoughts of people getting busted for file sharing.
Since uTorrent first came out for Windows, there’s been no question it’s the best client. It’s fantastic. I havent owned a Mac since 10.3 was the shit so I dont know where things currently stand but from the comments here it sounds like there’s already a good client available. So I agree – what’s the point in spending resources to release this? I dont know.
Yes, now I borring bitcomet
It was well worth the wait.. using right now and can’t wait for rss to be available
using tvshows in the mean time.
Not switching. Too many bugs.
Oh Good Thank.
To those assuming that its a bad idea for utorrent to invest in a mac version, I think the company has done pretty good so far & I think they have crunched the numbers to see weather or not it is cost feasible to work on a mac version. To Domain M. its obvious from the numbers u posted that u haven’t, p2p is approaching or past %50 of the internet traffic as of now & is steady on the incline not decline & the mac market is not exactly a penny store either, so to say a company is making a bad decision when you don’t have the data to make an informed prediction is just dumb. I don’t have their books in hand either but I’m betting they have a better idea than me on weather this is a good idea or not =).
