Be-A-Magpie actually inspired me. I signed up 2 weeks ago, learned within 30-seconds that they auto-tweeted using my account and I wasn't cool with that. So, I went immediately into dev. Today, 4/29/09, we launched betweeted.com -- I call it "socially responsible" advertising on Twitter.

Ive used this service and frankly its a real bad investment. Their targeting is extremely hopeless. They also don't check on duplicate tweets, so Ive had the same person tweet my ad on 2 consecutive days and I had to pay twice to reach the same set of people. FYI, I can create fake profiles and follow a targeted set of users on twitter have about 50% of them follow me back and post my advert to them at $0 using my bot.

The reporting is an analytics eyewash and their customer support takes 3 days to reply.

If you ask me stay away and stop promoting this crappy site. You can make more money pushing affiliate offers to your followers.

It's amazing how much negative press this received. I make $100 every 2 weeks on magpie and not one person has complained.

I also did another advertising deal over twitter and published the results.

Excellent points, Andy. Isn't Calacanis running advertisements for Mahalo constantly on Twitter. Aren't we all (who own websites/blogs) advertising for ourselves when we say, "check out this post on bla bla" on Twitter? What's the difference between this and Magpie. Wait, I know the answer; the ad isn't disclosed (even thought it should be obvious).

Also, I hope I'm not the only person who thinks the PayPerpost analogy is flawed. PPP pays you to post on web properties that YOU own.

I have a better variation.
Why not allow advertisers to buy "words". The words are links and twitterers signed up for the service have every occurence in their tweets of these words turned into these links. Multiple advertisers can buy the same words, the ones spending the most money are linked to more frequently.
This way it won't annoy followers and followees(?) as they don't have to see any actual ads.
They can maybe switch to a CPC model instead.

I use twitter daily for friends/family. While I woud tolerate ads on the page, I would not tolerate them in my friends twitter stream. I will block anyone using this service. I think this is a good idea implemented poorly. there are easier less intrusive ways of monetizing twitter

[...] Techcrunch says, “The service auto-determines the number of ads to insert per legitimate Twitter message - the default is one ad for every five Tweets. The service inserts the ads automatically by storing your Twitter credentials. As for disclosure - well, there really isn’t any. A #magpie hashtag is added to each Tweet, but that’s it.” [...]
